Why this reference exists

Tree service is the most capital-intensive of the residential service trades. A starter crew needs a solid five-figure outlay to open the doors; a fully-equipped 2-truck crew runs several times that, well into six figures. Equipment-buying decisions determine profitability; this reference is the working framework for sizing them.

Essential equipment (starter crew)

For a 2-3 person crew handling small + medium residential, the truck + chipper are the biggest decisions; everything else adds up but is smaller money.

Vehicles: the largest capital line after the chipper, new, financed, or used with a trailer.

Cutting: 1-3 chainsaws (16-20" bar, mid-grade); a top-handle climber's saw (a premium over a same-size ground saw); a pole saw; a hand saw backup.

Climbing: climbing rope (retires on a schedule, not on failure); a climbing saddle (fitted per climber, a real one-time cost); 2 lanyards; a friction hitch or mechanical device; throwline + throwball.

Safety: helmet + face shield, chainsaw chaps, steel-toe boots, eye + ear protection, gloves. Modest but real per-person cost, not the place to cut corners (see the ROI note below).

Rigging: rope, block + pulley, friction device, slings + carabiners. A moderate add-on, scaling with takedown vs pruning mix.

Chipper (huge cost decision): after the truck, the single biggest line item a starter crew faces; sizing it wrong (see below) is expensive to walk back.

Other: extension ladder, first-aid + AED kit, cones + barriers, hand tools, tarps, a 2-way radio. All individually inexpensive.

Total starter (residential small jobs): the truck and chipper dominate the outlay; hand tools, safety gear, and climbing kit round out a solid five-figure total before the crew books its first job.

Premium additions for larger jobs + commercial: a crane (rare residential, common commercial) is the single biggest equipment line in the trade, well into six figures; most shops rent rather than own one. Premium chainsaws + multiple backup sets are a smaller add, low five figures.

Capital cost decisions + financing

Buy vs lease/rent: buy a chipper, aerial lift, or stump grinder used 50+ days/year (high utilization). Rent a chipper used only 10-20 days/year (cheaper than idle capital), a crane (usually; only crane companies own one), or any one-off specialty need.

Used vs new: avoid a used chainsaw 3-5 years old (consumer-grade doesn't hold up); a used chipper 5-10 years old from a reputable owner is good value; a used aerial lift needs a DOT-certification check; a used stump grinder needs a check of teeth + spindle wear. For most starter businesses: used trucks + chipper, new chainsaws + safety gear.

Financing: vehicles typically finance over 5 years, chippers over 3-5, aerial lifts over 5-10, chainsaws + smaller tools in cash. Most equipment qualifies for the Section 179 tax benefit; discuss specifics with a CPA.

Per-day operating math

Crew of 3 with chipper: wages are the largest daily line, followed by vehicle + fuel, equipment wear (from the table above), insurance allocation, and variable permit + disposal fees. Daily revenue target needs to clear total operating cost by a healthy margin, not just break even; price the day, not the hour.

Equipment safety, compliance + annual audit

Most equipment requires inspection + certification: chainsaws (daily user inspection), climbing equipment (pre-use per ANSI Z133), aerial lifts + vehicles (annual DOT certification, commercial), chipper (daily safety check). Keep records: inspection logs (1-year minimum), current certifications, lifetime maintenance history, recall information.

Each year, audit the whole fleet: inventory (serial numbers, location, condition), maintenance status, replacement schedule for expiring items, insurance value adjustment, tax basis (depreciation). Track it in a spreadsheet or dedicated asset-management software.

Wage + equipment ratio

Equipment-heavy tree service businesses run 60-70% gross margin; labor-heavy ones run 40-55%. More equipment means higher fixed cost, lower variable cost per job; less equipment is the reverse. Optimal is a balance.

Strong businesses invest in equipment that enables larger jobs (an aerial lift opens commercial work), cuts labor hours per job (chipper, mini-loader), or reduces injury risk (proper gear).

Common pitfalls + when to upgrade

Under-equipping (can't take profitable jobs). Over-buying (financing payments squeeze cash flow). Wrong size chipper (a 6" chipper on 12" wood is a bottleneck). Cheap chainsaws (a 3-month life erases any savings). Used equipment bought without inspection (hidden problems). No maintenance schedule (breakdown on a job).

Upgrade triggers: repair cost exceeds 50% of replacement value, the equipment limits the jobs you can take, newer technology dramatically improves productivity, a new model meets a safety standard the old one doesn't, or the equipment is past 10-15 years old.

Insurance + bonding

Tree service is high-risk insurance: workers comp (state-mandated), commercial auto, equipment insurance, sometimes bonding. Premium runs a solid five-figure annual cost even for a small operation, several times more for a mid-size fleet. Drive it down with a clean safety record, training documentation, ANSI Z133 compliance.

Customer-facing equipment

Customers notice branded vehicles, crew uniforms, modern + well-maintained equipment, properly placed cones + signage, and visible safety practices. This is what differentiates a premium-pricing operation from a "guy with a truck" competitor.

Crew turnover + equipment

Each new hire needs their own kit, fitted per person and not shared: climbing gear, safety gear (helmet, chaps, boots), plus training time. When crew turns over: lost investment in their gear, plus retraining time + lost productivity while the replacement ramps up.

The single highest-ROI equipment upgrade for tree service: invest in safety gear before crew safety incidents happen. A modest per-worker investment in proper harness, chaps, helmet, boots prevents a workers comp claim that runs many multiples of that gear cost.
