Declining Tree Diagnosis - Troubleshooting

When this comes up

"My tree looks sick - can you save it?" is one of the most common consultation calls. The right answer earns trust (whether yes or no). The wrong answer costs the tree, the customer's money, + the company's reputation. This is a systematic walkthrough to diagnose decline + price the response.

Symptoms customers describe

  • Dying back from the top (called a "flag")
  • Yellow leaves out of season
  • Leaves smaller than normal
  • Early leaf drop
  • Bare branches scattered through canopy
  • Mushrooms at trunk or root zone
  • Bark falling off
  • Insects swarming
  • Sticky residue on leaves
  • Wilting on hot days that doesn't recover overnight

Each pattern tells a different story.

Diagnostic walk

Step 1: Site history (ask customer)

  • When did you first notice?
  • Any construction nearby in the past 1-5 years?
  • New lawn irrigation? Old well failed?
  • Soil grade changed? Mulch added?
  • Pesticide or weed-killer applied nearby?
  • Any storms or major heat/cold events?
  • Any utility work?
  • Tree planted by them or already established?

Often the cause was a year or two earlier than the symptoms appear. Trees decline slowly.

Step 2: Look at the whole tree first

  • Is decline symmetric or one-sided?
  • One side = root or trunk damage on that side
  • Top-down = water stress or root damage (whole tree)
  • Bottom-up = decay or wound at base
  • Scattered = pest or disease
  • All-at-once = sudden insult (chemical, mechanical, lightning)

Step 3: Inspect bottom-up

Root zone:

  • Compacted soil? Foot traffic, vehicle parking, recent construction?
  • Buried root flare? (Common; volcano mulching, soil added)
  • Mushrooms or fungal conks?
  • Mounding or cracking soil? (Root plate movement = imminent failure)
  • Recent trench, driveway, or pool excavation within 30 ft?
  • Disturbed mulch ring or freshly applied black mulch (dyed) - often dye, not problem

Trunk:

  • Cavities, cracks, included bark
  • Cankers (sunken or oozing patches)
  • Frost cracks (vertical splits, common but mostly cosmetic)
  • Borer holes (regular pattern of small holes; sap weeping)
  • Mechanical damage from mower or weed-eater
  • Lightning strike scar (spiraling crack down trunk)

Canopy:

  • Dead branches scattered (deadwood - pest, disease, age)
  • Dieback from tips inward (drought, root damage)
  • Yellowing veins / interveinal chlorosis (nutrient lockout, pH issue, herbicide damage)
  • Sticky leaves (aphids, scale)
  • Leaf miners, leaf rollers, blight spots
  • Web tents in branches (eastern tent caterpillar, fall webworm - usually cosmetic)

Common decline patterns + causes

Top-down dieback (flagging):

  • Drought stress (most common)
  • Construction root damage 2-5 years prior
  • Compacted soil starving roots of oxygen
  • Borer infestation (bronze birch borer, emerald ash borer)
  • Water table change (new sump pump, raised grade)

One-sided dieback:

  • Root damage on that side
  • Sunscald (south-facing trunk on a sun-exposed tree)
  • Soil contamination (de-icing salt from drive)
  • Mechanical trunk damage on that side
  • Severed roots from trenching

Center-of-crown dieback:

  • Internal decay (more common in old trees)
  • Anthracnose (sycamore, maple, oak) - usually recoverable
  • Verticillium wilt (maple, ash) - fatal, no cure

Whole-tree wilt:

  • Catastrophic root damage
  • Severe drought
  • Verticillium wilt
  • Oak wilt
  • Lightning strike

Yellow leaves (chlorosis):

  • Iron deficiency (pin oak in alkaline soil) - fix by lowering pH or iron injection
  • Manganese deficiency
  • Soil compaction
  • Over-watering (excess water = chlorosis from oxygen starvation)
  • Herbicide drift from nearby lawn treatment

Decision framework - save vs remove

After full inspection, sort into:

Save (high probability):

  • One symptom, recoverable cause (drought + correct watering)
  • Pest or disease with known treatment
  • Construction damage if root zone restored aggressively
  • Less than 40% canopy dieback + structurally sound

Save (low probability):

  • 40-60% canopy dieback
  • Internal decay extends 30%+ of trunk diameter
  • Major root damage + the tree has not stabilized

Remove:

  • 60% canopy dieback

  • Structural failure imminent (root plate moving, cracks visible, conks at base)
  • Verticillium, oak wilt advanced, EAB confirmed in ash
  • Tree poses property risk + lifespan won't justify the cost

For tomorrow's customers: send a written assessment with photos + cost-of-save vs cost-of-remove. Most customers appreciate honesty + come back.

Treatments (when save is recommended)

Mulch + soil restoration: 3-4" deep mulch in 6-10 ft radius, NEVER against trunk. Aerate compacted soil. Water deeply + infrequently. depending on scope.

Deep root fertilization: liquid injection of slow-release fertilizer + biostimulants.. Often combined with mulch + aeration.

Pest treatment: systemic insecticide (imidacloprid for EAB; dinotefuran for many pests). depending on size. Annual or 2-3 year cycle.

Fungicide for treatable diseases: limited efficacy; for high-value specimens. Anthracnose, apple scab, leaf blights.

Cabling + bracing: for structurally weak but visually valuable trees. ANSI A300 part 3..

Root collar excavation: when buried flare is the cause..

Tree health monitoring contract: annual visit, photo documentation, soil test, treatment recommendation.. Recurring revenue + earlier intervention.

When to recommend a Plant Pathologist consult

Some diagnoses require lab tests:

  • Suspected oak wilt (lab confirmation via root sampling)
  • Verticillium wilt (xylem staining + lab)
  • Sudden Oak Death (lab required, regulatory significance)
  • Vascular pathogens generally
