Sour or Fermented Smell From a Trunk Seep, Bacterial vs Fungal: Decision Tree

Why this matters

A dark, wet streak running down a trunk with a sour or fermented odor sends customers straight to "is my tree rotting and dangerous." The smell is the diagnostic. A sour, fermented, alcohol-or-vinegar odor with a watery, often frothy seep is the signature of bacterial wetwood (slime flux), which is usually a chronic, low-structural-risk condition. A mushroomy, earthy odor with punky wood, conks, or a cavity points to active wood-decay fungi, which is a structural concern. Telling these two apart in the field stops you from condemning a tree over a cosmetic bacterial seep, and just as important, keeps you from waving off a fungal decay that needs a real risk assessment. The nose plus a few checks does most of the work.

Symptom presentation

  • "Sour, beer-or-vinegar smell, wet dark streak down the bark, sometimes foamy": classic bacterial wetwood / slime flux. Often weeps from a crack, old wound, or branch union.
  • "Smells like fermentation, attracts flies and wasps to the wet spot": fermenting sugars in the seep, consistent with wetwood.
  • "Earthy, mushroomy smell, and the wood is soft/punky or there's a conk": wood-decay fungi, structural.
  • "No smell, just a clear or amber sap run": normal sap flow or a sapsucker/insect site, not flux at all.
  • "Discolored, foul liquid with bark dieback around it": could be a bacterial canker or a fungal canker; needs closer ID.

Quick checks

  1. Smell it (from a safe distance, do not inhale deeply at the source): sour/fermented/alcoholic vs earthy/mushroomy vs odorless.
  2. Locate the exit point: a crack, old pruning wound, union, or trunk injury. Wetwood typically weeps from such defects under internal gas pressure.
  3. Probe the wood at and around the seep: firm wood that just looks wet vs soft, punky, crumbling wood.
  4. Look for fruiting bodies (conks, brackets, mushrooms) anywhere on the trunk, flare, or roots, and for bark dieback or a defined canker margin.

Isolation tree

Lead with odor, confirm with wood condition.

  1. Odor is SOUR / FERMENTED / ALCOHOLIC, seep is watery and possibly frothy?

    • Yes -> bacterial wetwood (slime flux) is the leading diagnosis. Go to step 2 to rule out concurrent decay.
  2. Probe the wood at the seep.

    • Firm wood, the wetness is surface staining only, no conks -> wetwood confirmed, low structural concern. The dark streak is staining, not a cavity.
    • Soft/punky wood, a cavity, or conks present -> decay is also active; do not let the wetwood smell mask a structural fungal problem underneath. Escalate.
  3. Odor is EARTHY / MUSHROOMY, or wood is soft/punky, or conks are present?

    • Yes -> wood-decay fungi. This is a structural pathway. Sound and probe the column, assess residual wall, and run a Level 2 risk assessment.
  4. Defined canker margin, dieback, sunken or cracked bark around the seep?

    • Yes -> suspect a bacterial or fungal canker rather than simple flux; this can be more aggressive and may warrant a diagnostic and species-specific management.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Bacterial wetwood confirmed: sour/fermented odor, watery (sometimes foamy) seep from a crack/wound/union, and firm surrounding wood with no fruiting bodies. It commonly recurs seasonally and stains the bark but does not, by itself, indicate imminent failure.
  • Fungal decay confirmed: earthy odor and/or soft punky wood, often with conks or a cavity, and measurable loss of sound wood on sounding/probing. This is the structural diagnosis.
  • Canker suspected: a defined margin of dead bark with dieback warrants closer ID before treatment.
  • Note the trap: wetwood and decay can coexist. A tree can have a harmless-smelling flux at a wound while a separate decay column develops elsewhere. Inspect the whole stem and base, not just the smelly spot.

Remediation

  • Bacterial wetwood: there is no cure and no benefit to drilling/draining (that practice is discouraged because it adds wounds). Manage the tree's vigor, keep the area clean, and reassure the customer; do not remove for flux alone. Prune any dead wood normally per ANSI A300.
  • Fungal decay: manage by risk, reduce load on a decayed stem via crown reduction if appropriate, monitor on an interval, or remove where residual strength over a target is inadequate.
  • Canker: prune out where feasible to sound wood, disinfect tools, and recommend diagnosis for aggressive or spreading cankers.
  • Always reduce avoidable wounding; both wetwood seeps and many decays enter through wounds and bad cuts.

Do not assume a smelly seep is harmless just because it smells like wetwood. If probing finds soft wood, a cavity, or conks, treat the tree as a potential structural-failure risk and complete a documented risk assessment before any climbing, rigging, or removal under ANSI Z133. Decay-weakened stems fail unpredictably.
