Tree Root Systems Reference

Why this reference exists

Above-ground tree work is half the story. The roots feed the tree, anchor it against wind, + cause most of the structural drama between trees + houses. Customers ask about roots all day: "Will the roots damage my foundation?" "Why is the lawn dying around the tree?" "Can I cut these surface roots?" This reference is the answer book + the basis for high-value consultations.

Root system anatomy

Most tree roots live in the top 12-24 inches of soil. The myth of a "deep taproot" applies to a few species (oak, walnut, hickory, pecan) + only when young. The dominant root structure is a wide, shallow lateral mat.

Structural roots: large woody roots (1"+ diameter) within 12 ft of trunk. Anchor the tree against wind + transfer water + mineral nutrients.

Absorbing roots: fine non-woody roots (smaller than a pencil) at the soil surface where oxygen + water + organic matter live. These do the actual work of feeding the tree. 90% turnover annually.

Mycorrhizal fungi: symbiotic fungi that wrap absorbing roots + extend their effective reach 100-1000x. Healthy trees have a dense fungal mat. Compacted or chemical-soaked soils kill the fungi + slowly starve the tree.

Critical root zone (CRZ): working definition for protecting trees during construction. Calculated as 1 ft radius per 1 inch of trunk DBH (diameter at breast height, 4.5 ft up). A 24" oak has a 24 ft CRZ - any soil disturbance inside that zone risks killing the tree.

Roots are wider than the crown

A tree's root system typically extends 2-3 TIMES the radius of the canopy (drip line). A 30 ft wide tree may have roots reaching 60-100 ft from the trunk in moist directions.

This is why:

  • Trees can pull moisture from under the neighbor's lawn
  • A trench dug across the yard can kill a tree on the property line
  • A wide-spreading neighbor's tree has roots under the customer's foundation

Common customer concerns + answers

"Will my tree roots damage my foundation?"

Almost never directly. Roots seek water + don't have the force to crack concrete. BUT: roots in already-cracked foundations expand the cracks (water + freeze-thaw + root pressure together). And roots near foundations dry out clay soil, which then shrinks, which can cause foundation settlement on expansive clay soils (Texas, Oklahoma, parts of California).

Practical answer: trees within 10 ft of foundation on clay soil should be evaluated by an arborist + structural engineer. Trees over 10 ft away rarely cause structural damage.

"Will my tree roots clog my sewer line?"

Yes, IF the sewer line is already cracked. Roots seek water + the leaking sewer line is a moisture beacon. Roots enter through cracks + grow into a mass that blocks flow. Fix: relining or replacing the pipe (separate scope, refer to plumber). Cutting the roots without fixing the pipe means re-clog in 12-24 months.

"My lawn is dying around the tree - why?"

Several causes:

  • Shade (grass needs sun)
  • Root competition for moisture (tree wins)
  • Allelopathy (some species - walnut especially - release growth inhibitors)
  • Compaction from foot traffic under the canopy

Solution: switch to shade-tolerant ground cover or mulch the root zone 3-4" deep. Don't try to fight the tree with more lawn.

"Can I cut these surface roots in my lawn?"

Selectively yes, structurally limited. Rules:

  • Never cut a root within 3x its diameter to the trunk
  • Never cut more than 25% of structural roots
  • Never cut roots that visibly support the tree's anchoring (uphill side of leaning trees, prevailing-wind side)
  • Cut clean with sharp pruners or saw - not torn
  • Best alternative: mulch over surface roots + accept them rather than mow over them

"Why are roots coming up at the surface?"

Surface rooting is caused by:

  • Compacted soil (no deep oxygen, roots stay shallow)
  • Watering only at surface (deep watering forces deeper roots)
  • Genetics (some species - maple, ash, beech - root shallow regardless)
  • Root flare buried too deep in original planting (roots compensate by going up)

Solution: aerate soil; mulch instead of mow; water deeply + infrequently.

Root damage signs (tree-side)

Catastrophic root damage shows up above ground:

  • Sudden lean or root plate movement
  • Mushrooms on the root zone or trunk base (decay)
  • Dying back from the top down ("flag" of dead branches)
  • Suckers (sprouts at the base) - survival response
  • Bark splitting or cankers near the base

Any of these = full inspection scope + likely removal recommendation.

Construction protection

Customers undergoing construction (new driveway, addition, pool) often unknowingly kill trees during the project. Pre-construction arborist consult saves the customer in lost tree value + later removal cost.

Standard construction protection:

  • Snow-fence the entire CRZ (1 ft per inch DBH)
  • Sign: "No storage, vehicles, soil disturbance"
  • Air-spade exploratory work BEFORE any excavation
  • Hand-dig any necessary trenches within CRZ
  • Aerate + mulch + water aggressively for 2-3 years post-construction
  • Document with photos for any future tree-related claim

Air spading

An air spade (jet of compressed air) excavates soil without cutting roots. Used for:

  • Diagnosing girdling roots (trunk-encircling roots that strangle the tree)
  • Finding utilities before digging
  • Exposing the root flare on buried trees
  • Pre-construction root mapping

Cost: typical residential. High-value consultation upsell.

Root collar excavation

A buried root flare (trunk widening at ground level) is a slow death sentence. Modern landscaping piles mulch + soil against the trunk; the trunk rots over 5-15 years. Exposing the flare with an air spade + recommending no-mulch-against-trunk saves the tree.

Sell as a service. Photograph the buried flare BEFORE + the exposed flare AFTER - sells future jobs at the same property + neighbors.

Fertilization + soil health

Most urban trees are starving for soil oxygen + organic matter, not nitrogen. Synthetic fertilizers grow leaves while soil compaction kills the roots underneath.

Better practice:

  • Mulch 3-4" deep, 6 ft radius, NEVER against trunk
  • Aerate compacted soil
  • Add organic matter (compost top-dress)
  • Slow-release organic fertilizer if soil test indicates deficiency

Soil tests from any state extension service. The professional way to fertilize.

The biggest mistake homeowners make is "volcano mulching" - piling mulch in a cone against the trunk. It buries the root flare, holds moisture against bark, + causes trunk rot. Almost every yard has at least one tree victimized by this. A 5-minute conversation + a root-flare exposure job per visit adds K-50K of annual revenue across a customer base - + it's almost universally welcomed because the customer can see the difference.
