Petzl ZigZag vs Rope Runner Pro Mechanical Prusik Decision
Why this matters
Mechanical hitch climbing devices are the dominant climbing technology on most modern tree-care crews, replacing the friction hitch (VT, Distel, Knut, schwabisch) for production climbers. The Petzl ZigZag (with or without the Chicane backup) and the Notch Rope Runner Pro are the two devices a climber will compare when buying. Each has documented use cases, manufacturer limits, and failure modes; choosing the wrong device for the climbing system on the truck (MRS vs SRT, rope diameter, weight class, choking vs static high anchor) produces a real risk of a sudden lock or an unwanted slip. This is the senior-climber decision document.
What each device actually is
Petzl ZigZag (and ZigZag Plus):
- Mechanical descender designed for Moving Rope System (MRS) doubled-rope tree climbing
- Aluminum chain of fixed links rotating around an axle
- CE EN 12841 type C compliant; ANSI Z359.4 not applicable (recreational and arborist standard)
- Manufacturer rope spec: 11.5 mm to 13 mm dynamic or low-stretch arborist rope, refer to current Petzl tech notice
- Working load 140 kg per Petzl current technical notice
- With Chicane backup: can be used in Stationary Rope System (SRS, sometimes called SRT) when paired
Notch Rope Runner Pro:
- Single-rope and doubled-rope capable mechanical hitch, hybrid design
- Cam-and-cleat configuration with a release lever
- Engineered by Kevin Bingham; manufactured by Notch Equipment
- Manufacturer rope spec: 11 mm to 13 mm static-leaning arborist rope
- Working load 130 kg, max load per Notch published spec
- Bridge link friction adjuster
- Permits both MRS and SRS use without an added backup device
Decision matrix
By climbing system on the truck:
- Strict MRS-only crew, doubled-rope discipline: ZigZag wins. The MRS-specific design is documented for ascent and descent.
- Strict SRT-only crew, single-rope discipline: Rope Runner Pro is the production tool. ZigZag plus Chicane works but adds parts and increases inspection burden.
- Mixed-discipline crew, climbers swapping methods mid-day: Rope Runner Pro. One device covers both.
- Heavy-aerial-rescue and self-rescue training emphasis: Rope Runner Pro. Tying off and locking is simpler.
By climber weight and load:
- Climbers above 100 kg with full gear: confirm device working load against the system's anchor and rope. Both devices nominally support a 100 kg climber, but ZigZag plus saddle plus saw plus gear can exceed 140 kg in some configurations.
- Female climbers and lighter weights: ZigZag MRS can self-tend more reliably on a well-sized rope; Rope Runner Pro requires deliberate cleat-loading.
By rope on the truck:
- Yale Blaze, Sterling Atrax, Samson Voyager (12 mm to 13 mm): both devices spec'd
- Tachyon (11.8 mm or 11.7 mm 24-strand): both spec'd
- Rope below 11 mm: neither device. Use friction hitch on dedicated thin-rope cordage.
- Rope above 13 mm or heavily coated 16-strand: ZigZag rejects; Rope Runner Pro may also slip.
Inspection and retirement criteria
Petzl ZigZag retirement (per Petzl technical notice):
- Visible deformation of any chain link
- Cracks anywhere on the device body
- Sheath wear groove on any link
- Function test: pull-test on a rope, the device must self-engage and hold a 80 kg pull within manufacturer spec
- Mandatory retirement at 10 years from date of manufacture regardless of use
Notch Rope Runner Pro retirement (per Notch published guidance):
- Visible cracks
- Cleat tooth wear or deformation
- Release lever bind or play outside spec
- Side plate scoring beyond a documented depth
- Annual competent-person inspection per OSHA 1910.140 and ANSI Z133
Both devices: any visible heat damage, shock load above climbing fall, or unknown history retires the device.
Failure modes documented in the field
ZigZag:
- Sudden lockup mid-descent caused by rope twist; mitigated by use of a swivel between rope and saddle
- Chain rotation jam from foreign-object ingestion (small twig or saddle Velcro hook)
- Misload condition (link engaged backward) on initial threading; visible inspection on the climb-out catches this
Rope Runner Pro:
- Slipping under load if the friction adjuster is set too low for rope diameter
- Release lever inadvertent activation when the device contacts the climber's saddle or chest harness
- Cleat tooth chip on rocks or hardware impact during ground use
Manufacturer training requirement
Petzl publishes mandatory technical notices and training videos for ZigZag and ZigZag Plus. Crews using the device must read the current technical notice (revision date matters; older revisions had different SRT compatibility statements). Notch likewise publishes the Rope Runner Pro instruction manual and a training video series. No crew member should climb on either device without documented training acknowledgement; OSHA 1926.502 and ANSI Z133 7.3 require employer-documented training on every fall-protection or work-positioning system used.
What you do not do
- Mount a ZigZag without the swivel link if you intend to descend any significant length; rope twist will lock the device
- Use a Rope Runner Pro on a rope outside the published diameter range
- Modify either device (replace pins, drill holes, weld, file teeth) - any modification voids manufacturer certification and creates a personal-injury liability
- Continue to climb on a device after a documented shock load; retire immediately
Recommendation for a 5-climber crew buying once
Two production climbers SRT-heavy: Rope Runner Pro each, on Yale Blaze 11.8 or Sterling Atrax.
Two production climbers MRS-heavy: ZigZag Plus with Chicane each, on Tachyon 11.8.
Foreman with mixed work: Rope Runner Pro, plus a spare ZigZag in the truck box for any climber who blows a device mid-day.
