Why this matters

"Sap is dripping all over my car" is one of the most common calls a tree service fields in late spring and summer. The customer believes the tree is bleeding and wants it removed or "treated." In reality, true sap drip from a healthy deciduous canopy is rare. The sticky film coating a parked car is almost always honeydew, the sugar-rich excrement of sap-feeding insects, not sap from the tree itself. Mislabeling it sends you down the wrong road: a customer who is told "your tree is dying" when the cause is a treatable aphid bloom loses trust, and a customer told "it's normal" when there is an active scale infestation watches the tree decline. Translating the complaint into the correct mechanism before quoting anything protects both the tree and your credibility.

Symptom presentation

Get the observable facts before forming a theory. Ask and look for:

  • Where is the sticky residue? Cars, patio furniture, and decks under the canopy point to airborne honeydew rain. Residue running down the trunk or a single limb points to a wound or canker.
  • Is the film clear and tacky, or does it have a black sooty coating? Sooty mold (a black fungal film growing on honeydew) confirms an insect source and tells you the problem has been active for weeks.
  • Season and timing. Honeydew peaks when aphid and soft-scale populations explode, typically late spring through midsummer. A sudden onset matches an insect bloom.
  • Species. Tulip poplar, maple, linden, oak, hackberry, and crepe myrtle are honeydew magnets. Pines and other conifers genuinely weep pitch from wounds and pruning cuts, which is a different mechanism.

Quick checks

These take five minutes on site and resolve most calls:

  1. Stand under the canopy on a still day. If you feel a fine sticky mist, that is honeydew rain from insects above.
  2. Turn over 10 to 20 leaves and inspect the undersides and twigs with a hand lens. Look for clustered aphids, white waxy scale bumps, or the cottony tufts of mealybug and cottony scale.
  3. Wipe a leaf and check for sooty mold. Its presence means a sustained insect food source.
  4. Watch for ants marching up the trunk. Ants farm aphids and scale for honeydew; a trunk highway of ants is a strong insect indicator.
  5. Inspect the trunk and scaffold limbs for an actual oozing point, fermenting odor, or bark staining that would indicate a bacterial or canker source rather than canopy insects.

Isolation tree

Branch on what you found.

  • Sticky film on cars and furniture, plus honeydew mist, plus insects on leaf undersides: insect-caused honeydew. Sub-branch by insect. Soft bodied clusters that move = aphids (fast to bloom, fast to crash, often resolves on its own). Immobile waxy bumps on twigs and leaves = soft scale (persistent, needs a planned treatment window). Cottony masses = mealybug or cottony scale.
  • Sticky film plus heavy black coating on leaves and surfaces: established infestation with sooty mold. The insects may be soft scale that has been feeding for a season.
  • Ooze or weeping confined to the trunk or one limb, often dark and sometimes sour-smelling: not honeydew. Suspect bacterial wetwood (slime flux) or a canker. This is a tree-health and structure question, not a pest question.
  • Conifer with resin at a pruning cut or wound: normal pitch flow. No treatment needed; reassure the customer.
  • Light sticky film, no insects found, no sooty mold, brief duration after a hot windy spell: often normal seasonal honeydew drift from a neighboring tree, not the subject tree at all. Check upwind canopies.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm before you commit a treatment plan. For suspected scale, scrape a few bumps with a thumbnail. Live soft scale yields a moist yellow body underneath; dead scale is dry and hollow. For aphids, the population and the honeydew should both be heaviest on new growth. For slime flux, the trunk ooze persists independent of canopy insects and recurs at the same wound. Tie the honeydew volume to the insect density: heavy drip with sparse insects suggests the source tree is actually a taller neighbor. When the diagnosis affects a pesticide decision, identifying the insect to at least the group level (aphid vs soft scale vs armored scale) matters, because armored scale does not produce honeydew and a sticky-car complaint rules it out as the cause.

Remediation

Match the action to the mechanism.

  • Aphids: often self-limiting as predators catch up. A strong water wash of accessible foliage knocks populations down. Recommend treatment only if the tree is young, stressed, or the drip is intolerable.
  • Soft scale: time any control to the crawler stage, the brief window when the immature insects are mobile and vulnerable. Dormant-season horticultural oil smothers overwintering stages on accessible trees.
  • General vigor: honeydew insects exploit stressed trees. Correcting drought stress with deep watering and relieving compacted or over-mulched root zones reduces susceptibility more durably than any single spray.
  • Trunk ooze / slime flux: do not seal or "treat" the wound. Manage the tree's overall vigor and advise the customer it is typically chronic but rarely fatal.
  • Normal pitch on conifers: no action; document and reassure.

Always set the customer's expectation that the car film will persist for a week or two even after a successful insect knockdown, because the residue already on surfaces does not vanish instantly.

Any insecticide or systemic treatment near a flowering tree carries pollinator risk. Do not apply broad-spectrum insecticides to a tree in bloom, and follow the product label and all applicable state pesticide-applicator licensing rules. When in doubt, defer to cultural controls.
