Vertical Bark Splits: Frost vs Sunscald vs Disease Decision Tree
Why this matters
A vertical split in trunk bark triggers an alarmed homeowner call, and the three most common causes (frost crack, sunscald, and an active canker pathogen) call for three completely different responses ranging from doing nothing to scheduling removal. A frost crack is a weather-driven separation that the tree usually walls off on its own; sunscald is a south-southwest winter injury that kills bark but is preventable and rarely structural; an active canker (Nectria, Cytospora, Botryosphaeria, fire blight on pome trees) is a spreading infection that can girdle a stem and become a liability. The aspect of the split, its margin character, the presence of callus, and any ooze or fruiting structures separate them reliably. Getting it right protects you from painting a healing frost crack with useless wound dressing or from missing a girdling canker on a tree over a target.
Symptom presentation
A frost crack is a long, more or less straight radial split running vertically up the trunk, typically on the trunk's sunny side, that opens in hard cold and may close in warm weather; over years it forms a raised frost rib of repeated callus along the seam. Sunscald appears as a sunken, discolored, or cracked dead patch of bark on the south to southwest side of young or thin-barked trees, often elongated vertically, with the dead bark eventually sloughing to reveal dead cambium beneath. An active canker presents as a sunken or discolored lesion, often with a defined margin, that may ooze, smell sour, show concentric callus rings where the tree is fighting it, or carry small fruiting bodies (pycnidia as black dots, or orange/coral Nectria fruiting). Cankers are not aspect-bound and frequently center on a wound, pruning cut, or branch stub.
Quick checks
Note the compass aspect of the split; southwest exposure strongly favors sunscald and frost cracking, while a random aspect favors a pathogen. Press the bark at and around the split for sponginess or hollowness indicating dead cambium. Cut a small window at the lesion margin with a clean knife and inspect the cambium: bright green-white living tissue right up to a clean callus edge suggests mechanical frost injury that is healing, while brown, water-soaked, or sour-smelling tissue that extends past the visible margin suggests an advancing canker. Look for ooze, frass, fruiting bodies, and whether the split centers on a prior wound or stub. Check for a frost rib (years of repeated callus) which confirms a chronic frost crack. Inspect nearby trees for the same lesion, which points to a contagious pathogen.
Isolation tree
Branch 1 - straight radial split on the sunny side, clean living cambium at the margins, possible raised frost rib, no ooze or fruiting: frost crack. Weather injury, generally not progressive disease.
Branch 2 - sunken or cracked dead bark patch on the south-southwest side of a young or thin-barked tree, dead cambium beneath, no spreading margin: sunscald. Winter sun-and-freeze injury, preventable, usually walled off.
Branch 3 - lesion with a defined or expanding margin, brown/water-soaked cambium past the visible edge, ooze, sour smell, concentric callus rings, or fruiting bodies: active canker. Identify the pathogen group by fruiting structure and host.
Branch 4 - split centered on an old pruning cut, stub, or mechanical wound with discolored streaking: wound-associated decay or opportunistic canker entering through the wound. Assess decay extent, not just the surface split.
Branch 5 - bacterial ooze plus shepherd's-crook blighted shoots on apple, pear, or related hosts: fire blight. Manage per the pome-fruit protocol, not as a generic canker.
Confirming diagnosis
The cambium window is the decisive test. Living green-white tissue meeting a clean, raised callus ridge confirms a mechanical injury (frost crack or sunscald) that the tree is closing. Discolored cambium that runs beyond the visible lesion, especially with a defined advancing front, confirms an active canker and tells you to map its vertical and circumferential extent because a canker that encircles more than roughly half the stem circumference is on track to girdle it. For pathogen identification that changes management, collect a margin sample and submit to a diagnostic lab; fruiting-body morphology under hand lens (orange Nectria sporodochia, black Cytospora pycnidia) supports a field call. Where decay is suspected behind a wound-associated split, sound and, if warranted, resistance-drill to quantify residual wall, since the structural question outranks the surface cosmetic one.
Remediation
Frost crack: no treatment to the crack itself. Do not apply wound paint or fill the seam; these trap moisture and interfere with compartmentalization. Maintain tree vigor with proper mulch and irrigation so the tree closes the wound. Monitor for decay entering an old crack.
Sunscald: protect new and thin-barked trees over winter with a light-colored trunk wrap or guard applied in fall and removed in spring, or with white tree-paint on the south-southwest exposure per nursery practice. Existing dead bark is left to slough; clean cuts to remove loose dead bark back to living tissue only if it is harboring pests, with no flush cutting into live wood.
Active canker: prune out the infected stem well below the lesion margin into clean wood per ANSI A300, disinfecting tools between cuts to avoid spreading the pathogen. Do not prune in wet weather for fungal cankers. For a stem canker girdling more than half the circumference, recommend removing that stem or, on a single-stem tree over a target, removal. Improve vigor and avoid the wounds and stress that invite opportunistic cankers. For fire blight, follow the regional protocol: remove blighted wood well below symptoms during dry weather and disinfect between cuts.
A canker that has girdled a significant fraction of a load-bearing stem creates a fracture point; treat such a stem as a structural hazard and follow ANSI Z133 for any climbing or aerial work above or below it. Do not rely on a sealed-looking surface; the strength loss is in the dead cambium and any decay behind it.
