Water Stain Location Tells the Leak Source: Seam vs End vs Hanger Single-Observable Decision Tree
Why this matters
A gutter leak leaves a signature, and the location of the stain or drip is the single most reliable observable for pinpointing the source. A streak on the fascia under a slip joint, a stain at the end of a run, a drip directly below a hanger screw, each points to a specific failure mode without ever needing to flood the gutter blindly. Reading the stain first turns a vague "it leaks somewhere" call into a targeted reseal, saving the tech from running a hose along the whole length hoping to catch the drip. This tree maps the one observable the customer can usually point to, where the water shows up, to the most likely source, then gives the confirming hose test for each.
A leak is water exiting the gutter where it should be contained. Gravity carries it straight down, so the stain almost always sits directly below the breach. The exceptions, wind-driven runback and capillary tracking, are the only complications this tree has to manage.
Symptom presentation
- A vertical stain or efflorescence streak on the fascia or siding below the gutter.
- A drip that appears only during rain, at a repeatable spot.
- Rot or peeling paint on the fascia at one location.
- Rust bleed or sealant discoloration at a joint.
Quick checks
Before the hose, read the dry evidence:
- Stand back and locate the highest point of the stain; that is roughly where the water exits.
- Inspect that point from the ladder: is it a slip joint/seam, an end cap, a miter corner, a hanger penetration, or an outlet?
- Note whether the drip is on the front lip, the back of the gutter, or coming through the bottom.
Isolation tree
Branch 1: Stain below a slip joint or seam. Sectional gutters join at slip joints; seamless runs still have miters and outlet seams. A stain centered under a joint means the sealant has failed or the joint has worked loose with thermal cycling. This is the most common leak on any non-seamless system. Confirm: run the hose just above the joint; water beads through the seam within seconds.
Branch 2: Stain at the end of a run. A stain at the far end points to an end cap. End caps are crimped and sealed; the sealant cracks or the crimp opens. Confirm: pool water against the end cap with a hose; a steady drip at the bottom corner of the cap confirms it.
Branch 3: Drip directly below a hanger or spike. Hidden-hanger screws and old spike-and-ferrule fasteners penetrate the back of the trough. A drip in a straight line below a fastener means the penetration leaks, the screw backed out, the hole elongated, or the sealant around a spike failed. Confirm: fill the trough past the fastener line; water weeps at the screw head or runs down the back wall.
Branch 4: Drip behind the gutter (back side). This is often NOT a gutter leak at all but a drip-edge or apron flashing gap letting roof water run behind the trough. Confirm: dry trough, wet fascia behind it during rain. If the trough holds water with no leak yet the fascia behind it is wet, look upstream at the roof edge, not the gutter.
Disambiguating wind-driven runback: if the stain only appears in wind-blown rain and the gutter passes a still-water hose test everywhere, the water is overshooting or being driven over the back lip, not leaking through a breach. That is a flashing/apron or capacity issue, not a seam, end, or hanger leak.
Confirming diagnosis
- Seam confirmed: hose above the joint produces an immediate weep at the seam line.
- End cap confirmed: ponded water at the end drips at the cap corner.
- Hanger confirmed: a filled trough weeps at a fastener head or down the back wall in line with a screw.
- Drip-edge/back confirmed: the trough is dry and tight, yet the fascia behind it wets during rain, pointing past the gutter to the roof edge.
Hose-test technique that isolates cleanly. Test from the top of the suspected breach down, never flood the whole run at once or you lose the location you came to find. Start with a low flow directly above the suspect joint and watch the underside for the first bead. If nothing weeps at low flow, raise the level to ponding depth to catch a breach that only opens under head pressure (end caps and back-wall hanger holes often need ponding to show). A seam that weeps instantly at trickle flow is a wide-open joint; one that only drips under ponding is a marginal seal that fails in heavy rain, useful to know when you decide reseal versus replace.
Reading capillary tracking. Water does not always exit straight below the breach. On the underside of the trough it can track several inches along a bead of old sealant or a fold before dropping, so the stain can sit slightly downstream of the actual hole. When the highest point of the stain does not line up with an obvious joint, inspect 2 to 4 in upstream along the bottom seam for the true exit. This is why the rule is "highest point of the stain is roughly the exit," not exactly.
Remediation
Seam: clean and dry the joint, apply a gutter-grade tripolymer or butyl sealant lapped over the upstream piece, and on a chronic slip joint consider converting to a sealed or seamless detail. End cap: re-crimp if loose, then bed and seal; replace a corroded cap. Hanger: reseat or relocate the fastener to solid wood, seal the old penetration, and add a hanger if spacing is wrong. Drip-edge/back: this leaves the gutter scope, install or correct drip edge and gutter apron so roof runoff enters the trough instead of tracking behind it.
