Weather + Climate Considerations Reference
Why this matters
Weather affects every outdoor service trade + indoor work where exterior conditions matter. Roofers can't roof in rain; painters need dry conditions; HVAC capacity must size to local design temps. The tech who plans around weather saves rework + customer dissatisfaction. This is the field card.
Working temperature ranges by trade
Roofing (asphalt shingle): install 45 - 85°F (cold sealant won't bond; hot tears thumbnails in shingles); wind < 25 mph; no rain (wet plywood mold); best spring + fall.
Painting exterior latex: 50 - 90°F application; < 85% humidity; no direct-sun surface > 100°F (skins fast); no rain in 24 hr forecast.
Painting oil-based: 45 - 95°F (wider than latex); slower drying = wet edge for hot conditions.
Painting concrete/masonry: don't paint freshly-cured concrete (high pH; primer needed); surface must be 5°F above dew point.
Plumbing PVC solvent weld: 40 - 90°F application; longer set time in cold.
HVAC outdoor start-up: don't run AC if outdoor < 60°F without manufacturer procedure (compressor oil viscosity).
Asphalt paving: 50°F+ surface, 40°F+ ambient; cold compacts poorly.
HVAC sizing by climate
Manual J load calculation uses:
- Outdoor design temp (winter + summer)
- Indoor design temp
- Building characteristics
- Internal load (people, equipment)
ASHRAE design temps (sample U.S.):
- Phoenix, AZ: 108°F summer / 35°F winter
- Atlanta, GA: 93°F / 21°F
- Boston, MA: 88°F / 9°F
- Denver, CO: 93°F / -1°F
- Minneapolis, MN: 90°F / -16°F
- Miami, FL: 90°F / 47°F
Oversize OR undersize from design = short-cycling OR underperformance.
Lawn care + pool service timing
Mowing: cool-season grass spring/fall growth burst; warm-season summer; don't mow wet grass. Fertilizer: cool-season spring/fall; warm-season late spring/summer; don't apply before heavy rain. Aeration + seeding: cool-season early fall optimal; warm-season late spring. Snow removal: when > 2" accumulated, before traffic packs it.
Pool opening: spring, water > 50°F, chemistry test required. Closing: fall, water < 60°F. Algae: warm + humid = high risk; increase chemicals. Heater: cold pool season; bypass during fall closing.
Painting weather rules
Temperature: 50 - 85°F surface (latex); 35 - 95°F (oil; some primers).
Humidity: 40 - 70% optimal for drying.
Wind: < 10 mph; higher causes overspray + uneven application.
Dew point: surface temp > 5°F above dew point (otherwise condensation prevents bonding).
Rain: 24 - 48 hr no rain forecast; longer for some primers.
Sun on hot day: don't paint surface in direct sun if surface > 100°F (skins over).
Cold weather paint: special formulations (Sherwin-Williams Resilience, Behr Premium Plus) extend lower temp range.
Roofing weather rules
No work conditions:
- Active rain
- Lightning OR thunderstorm
- Wind > 25 mph (sheet handling dangerous)
- Frost on deck (slippery + slow seal)
- Hail forecast
Acceptable conditions:
- Clear OR overcast
- 50 - 85°F
- Wind < 15 mph
Hot weather precautions:
- Hydration
- Sun protection
- Avoid asphalt skin contact (very hot)
- Shingles soft + difficult to handle
Cold weather precautions:
- Asphalt brittle; cracks during handling
- Sealant strips won't activate (use roof cement)
- Frost on metal flashing slip hazard
Gutter work timing
Best season: late fall after leaves down; mid-spring before storms.
Avoid: frozen gutters (cleaning damages them), active rain (mud + slip hazard).
Frozen pipe season
Pipe freeze risk:
- Outdoor temp < 20°F overnight
- Indoor pipes against exterior wall
- Unheated spaces (garage, crawlspace, attic)
Service spike: cold snap = thousands of frozen pipe calls.
Prevention service (pre-winter):
- Insulate exposed pipes
- Disconnect hoses + drain hose bibs
- Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to room heat
- Trickle water during extreme cold
Thaw service (frozen pipe):
- Locate freeze
- Apply heat (hair dryer, heat tape, heated towel)
- Open faucet to let melting water flow
- Don't use torch (fire risk + pipe damage)
Storm cleanup work
Wind damage: roof shingles, fence, tree limbs.
Water damage: flooding, plumbing leaks during storm.
Power outage: generator + power restoration + electrical equipment damage.
Insurance work: storm cleanup + reconstruction often via insurance; documentation critical.
Customer scheduling around weather
Rescheduling policies:
- Weather forecast 24+ hr ahead = reschedule
- Day-of weather = call customer; reschedule if needed
- Customer fee structure for cancellation (typically waived for weather)
Bad-weather alternatives:
- Indoor work (reschedule outdoor)
- Shop / inventory work
- Customer follow-ups + paperwork
Climate-specific equipment
Cold climate:
- Heated pipe wrap
- Snow tires / chains
- Insulated boots + gloves
- Extra cold-weather paint
- Snow shovels + ice melt
- 4WD truck
Hot climate:
- Drinking water + cooler
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, long sleeves UV-rated)
- HVAC + ventilation accommodation
- Heat-rated tools + cordless batteries
Coastal / humid:
- Stainless tools (avoid corrosion)
- Anti-corrosion treatment
- Mildew-resistant materials specifications
Mountain / high-altitude:
- Adjusted gas appliance jet sizes
- Lower oxygen affects combustion
- Sun + UV intensity
- Equipment derated for elevation

Peak season (summer for HVAC, winter for heating):
- Higher labor rates OK; demand high
- Schedule fills quickly

Common weather mistakes
Painting outdoors when humidity > 85% (won't cure properly). Roofing in cold weather without adjustment (sealant doesn't activate). Mowing wet grass (clumps + disease spread). Pool not closed before freeze (broken plumbing). HVAC undersized for design temp (uncomfortable on extreme days). Forgetting to reschedule when forecast indicates problems. Ignoring lightning safety on roof / scaffold.
