Gutter Components + Install Reference
Why this matters
Gutters protect foundation + landscape from roof water. Wrong sizing, install, OR maintenance = water damage. The gutter installer who specs correctly + installs cleanly delivers long-lasting protection. This is the field card.
Gutter materials
Aluminum: most common; lightweight; rust-resistant; available in many colors. .027 to .032" gauge for residential. Most common 5" K-style.
Steel (galvanized): stronger than aluminum; rusts over time without coating; less common new install.
Copper: premium; develops patina; long life (50+ years); expensive.
Vinyl: cheap; brittle in cold; shorter life (15 - 20 yr); DIY installs.
Zinc: European; long life; rare US residential.

K-style (most common):

Half-round:
- Traditional style
- Round bottom; semicircular
- 5" + 6" common
- Lower capacity than K-style same size
Box gutter:
- Concealed in built-in gutter system
- Commercial + premium residential

Fascia gutter:
- Built into fascia board
- Custom
Gutter sizing
5" K-style: standard residential up to 2,500 sq ft single-story roof area.
6" K-style: larger homes OR steep roofs (collect more water).
Multi-story OR complex roof: 6" minimum; sometimes 7".
Sizing rule (per inch of rain in 1 hour):
- 5" K-style: 600 sq ft roof per downspout
- 6" K-style: 1,000 sq ft roof per downspout
Slope: 1/4" per 10 ft minimum; max ~ 3/8" per 10 ft for visual flat appearance.
Downspout sizing
Most common: 2x3" rectangular (smaller homes).
3x4" rectangular: larger homes (50%+ more capacity than 2x3").
4" round: traditional + decorative.
Each downspout serves: 300 - 1,200 sq ft depending on size + rainfall.
More downspouts for complex roofs (avoid overloaded single downspouts).
Hangers + mounting
Hidden hangers (K-style): screw into fascia behind gutter; clean appearance.
Spike + ferrule (older): nail driven through gutter + ferrule into fascia; loosens over time.
Strap hangers: screw into rafter tail through roof; for fascia-less install.
Spacing: 24 - 36" between hangers; closer in heavy snow / ice climates.
Screw / nail: stainless steel OR aluminum to avoid corrosion.
Common gutter components
Gutter section: long piece; cut to length.
End cap: at gutter ends + corners.
Outside corner / inside corner: 90° gutter direction changes.
Drop outlet (downspout opening): hole cut for downspout connection.
Downspout: vertical drain pipe.
Downspout straps: attach to wall.
Downspout elbows: 75° elbow (offset) + 90° elbow (extender).
Splash block OR extension: at downspout exit; directs water away from foundation.
Gutter guard / leaf guard: prevents debris clogging.
Install procedure
1. Measure roof + plan layout: sections, corners, downspout locations.
2. Mark chalk line at correct slope (1/4" per 10 ft).
3. Pre-drill fascia for hangers (if needed for material).
4. Install hangers: 24 - 36" spacing along chalk line.
5. Cut gutter sections to length.
6. Crimp + seal end caps + corners: typical pop rivets + gutter sealant.
7. Cut drop outlet hole at downspout location.
8. Mount gutter into hangers.
9. Install downspouts: vertical sections + elbows + straps to wall.
10. Install splash blocks at downspout exits.
11. Test with water: pour water in; verify flow + no leaks.
Gutter sealant
Most common: polyurethane gutter sealant (Lexel, Geocel, OSI Quad).
Apply at every joint: corners, end caps, drop outlets, splice joints.
Inside seams only: outside should be visible clean.
Cure: 24 hr before water test.
Common gutter mistakes
Wrong slope (water doesn't flow OR overflows). Spike + ferrule install (loosens; gutter sags). Single downspout for large roof (overflows). Splash blocks angled toward foundation (water pools at foundation). Gutters don't extend past last shingle (water sheets behind gutter). Skipping water test after install. Damaging fascia during install. Hanger spacing too wide (gutter sags between).
Common gutter issues + fixes
Sagging gutter: hangers loose OR insufficient; add hangers + tighten.
Overflow: undersized OR clogged; clean + check downspout sizing.
Leaking at corner / seam: re-seal with polyurethane gutter sealant.
Loose downspout: re-attach straps; check elbow connections.
Ice in gutter (cold climate): heat tape (heat trace) install; OR ice + water shield extended.
Mosquitoes / standing water: clean + slope correctly OR install screen.
Foundation damage: extend downspouts further from foundation (10+ ft preferred).
Gutter guards
Mesh screen (basic): blocks leaves; debris piles on top.
Foam insert: cheap; allows water through; clogs eventually.
Reverse-curve hood (LeafGuard, Gutter Helper): water adheres around curve; debris falls off.
Brush insert (Gutter Brush): simple + replaceable.
Permanent fitting: pro-installed; warranty.
Customer education: gutter guards reduce cleaning frequency but don't eliminate maintenance.
Cleaning frequency
Most homes: 2x annually (spring + fall).
Heavy tree coverage: 4x annually OR install guards.
Pine needles + small debris: more frequent cleaning.
Snow + ice region: clear leaves before winter freeze.
Maintenance service
Inspection: visual + flush with hose.
Replacement vs repair
Repair: leaks, sagging, single section damage.
Replace: aluminum > 20 yr; steel rusted through; vinyl cracked.
Customer education
Foundation protection: water away from foundation = prevents settling + cracks.
Landscape protection: prevents erosion.
Roof protection: prevents water backup under shingles.
Annual cleaning: critical to performance.
Splash block placement: visible reminder to customers.
Truck stock
Aluminum gutter (5" + 6" K-style), aluminum downspout (2x3" + 3x4"), elbows + outlets + corners (5" + 6"), splash blocks, polyurethane gutter sealant (Lexel OR equivalent), hidden hangers, screws + bolts (stainless), aluminum drill bits, snips (multiple sizes), level + chalk line + measuring tape, ladder + fall protection.
Cold climate considerations
Ice damming: water backs up + freezes; pulls gutters off.
Heat tape (gutter heat trace): in gutter + downspout; melts ice.
Snow guards on roof above gutter: prevents avalanche.
Reinforced hangers: closer spacing + heavy-duty.
Ice + water shield extends well past eave (covered in roof underlayment).
Hot / coastal climate considerations
Algae growth in gutter: clean more often.
UV degradation (vinyl): replace with aluminum.
