Roof Valley or Drip Edge vs Gutter: Which Causes Fascia Rot Decision Tree

Why this matters

Fascia rot is the symptom that gets blamed on the gutter by default, because the gutter is bolted right to the rotted board. But the gutter is often the victim, not the cause. Rot at the fascia comes from three distinct water paths: a roof valley dumping concentrated runoff that overshoots or runs behind the gutter, a missing or mis-lapped drip edge letting roof water wick behind the trough onto the fascia, or an actual gutter leak (back wall, hanger, or seam) wetting the board. Replacing the gutter when the real cause is a valley overshoot or a missing drip edge guarantees the new gutter rots out the same board in a few seasons. This tree separates the roof-edge causes from the gutter cause using the location and pattern of the rot.

Fascia rot is chronic wetting of a wood board that should stay dry behind a properly flashed roof edge. The diagnostic question is which water path keeps reaching the board.

Symptom presentation

  • Soft, spongy, or crumbling fascia behind or below the gutter.
  • Rot concentrated under a roof valley, at an end, or spread along a run.
  • Peeling paint, dark staining, or fungal growth on the fascia.
  • The gutter back wall, hangers, or the board behind the gutter shows water tracks.

Quick checks

Look at where the rot is worst and trace water uphill:

  • Is the rot directly under a valley termination, or under a run with no valley above it?
  • Pull the gutter slightly or inspect behind it: is there a drip edge lapping into the trough, or does the roof underlayment/shingle stop short, letting water run down the fascia face?
  • Is the gutter itself dry inside (rot from outside the trough) or does it hold and leak water (rot from the gutter)?

Isolation tree

Branch 1: Roof valley overshoot. Valleys concentrate runoff from two roof planes into a narrow stream. Where that stream hits the gutter, it can overshoot the front lip in a downpour or, if the valley terminates short, sheet behind the gutter onto the fascia. Tell: rot is centered directly below a valley, worst in heavy rain, and the fascia behind/below the valley is wettest. The gutter may be clean and intact.

Branch 2: Missing or mis-lapped drip edge. Drip edge (and gutter apron) directs roof water off the shingle edge and into the trough. Without it, or with it lapped behind the gutter incorrectly, water clings to the underside of the roof edge and runs down the fascia behind the gutter. Tell: rot spread along a run with no valley above, the fascia behind the gutter is consistently wet, and inspection shows no drip edge or an apron that dumps behind the trough.

Branch 3: Gutter leak wetting the board. A leaking back wall, a failed hanger penetration, or an overflowing trough that spills backward wets the fascia from the gutter side. Tell: the rot tracks a leak signature (below a hanger, a seam, or where the trough overflows), and a still-water hose test in the trough reproduces the wetting.

Disambiguating: Run a hose down the valley with the gutter dry. If the fascia behind the gutter wets while the trough stays empty, the water is bypassing the gutter, this is a roof-edge problem (valley or drip edge), not the gutter. Then split valley from drip edge by location: localized under a valley is Branch 1; spread along a non-valley run is Branch 2. If instead the trough must hold water before the fascia wets, it is Branch 3, the gutter.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Valley confirmed: rot is directly below a valley, valley-only hose flow wets the board, and the gutter trough stays dry.
  • Drip edge confirmed: no drip edge or a mis-lapped apron, fascia wets behind a dry trough along a non-valley run.
  • Gutter confirmed: a ponded or leaking trough is required to wet the board, and a hose in the trough reproduces it at a seam, hanger, or back wall.

Reading the rot pattern before you wet anything. The shape and location of the rot narrow the cause before the hose comes out. Rot in a tight vertical column centered under a valley is concentrated runoff, Branch 1. Rot spread as a long horizontal band along the top of the fascia behind the gutter, with no valley above, is roof-edge bypass, Branch 2. Rot that radiates from a single point, a hanger screw, a seam, an outlet, is gutter-side wetting, Branch 3. The pattern alone usually picks the branch; the hose test only confirms it.

The lap orientation that causes silent Branch 2 failures. A drip edge or apron only works if water flows OVER it into the trough. A common install error laps the apron so its lower edge sits behind the back wall of the gutter instead of inside it, or terminates the underlayment short of the apron. Water then sheets off the roof, bridges the gap, and runs down the fascia face behind the trough, exactly mimicking a missing apron. When you find an apron but still get behind-gutter wetting on a non-valley run, check that the apron actually delivers water inside the trough and that the underlayment laps over the apron's roof leg, not under it.

Kickout flashing at wall-roof intersections. Where a roof edge dies into a sidewall above the gutter, a missing kickout diverter dumps a concentrated stream straight down the wall-fascia junction and rots the board and the wall sheathing behind it. Treat a missing kickout as a Branch 1 variant: localized rot at a wall intersection, fixed by adding the diverter, not by touching the gutter.

Remediation

Valley: extend or correct the valley termination, add a kickout/diverter where the valley meets the wall or gutter, and confirm the stream lands in the trough. Drip edge: install drip edge and a gutter apron that laps over the back of the trough so roof water enters the gutter, not the fascia, lapping it under the underlayment and over the gutter back per code. Gutter: reseal or rehang to stop the back-wall or hanger leak, correct overflow per a separate overflow diagnosis. In all three, replace the rotted fascia and any compromised sheathing before reattaching the gutter.
