Seamless Aluminum Gutter Installation SOP
Purpose
Standardize installation of seamless aluminum K-style gutters (the dominant US residential gutter today). Quality installation here prevents 20+ years of overflow, leaks, foundation damage.
Scope
Residential 5" + 6" K-style aluminum gutters. Excludes half-round (specialty install), copper (specialty), steel (rare), commercial systems.
Prerequisites
- Seamless gutter machine on truck (or pre-cut sections from supplier)
- Aluminum coil stock (.027" minimum thickness; .032" premium)
- Hidden hangers (or spike + ferrule for older homes)
- Downspouts (typically 2"×3" or 3"×4")
- End caps, miter joints (inside + outside corners), splash blocks
- Caulk + sealant (gutter sealant, NOT roofing caulk)
- Pop rivets + rivet gun
- Drip edge (if not already installed)
- Tools: snips, screw gun, chalk line, level
Procedure
Step 1: Measure + plan (1-2 hours)
- Measure each gutter run (length in linear feet)
- Count downspouts needed (1 per 30-40 linear feet typical)
- Locate downspout placement: corners + middle of long runs
- Identify discharge points (must extend away from foundation)
- Note inside + outside corners for miter joints
- Check fascia + soffit for rot - repair before install
- Verify drip edge installed properly
Step 2: Set slope (15 min per run)
- From the downspout end, mark high point at the gutter run's far end
- Slope: 1/4 inch per 10 feet toward downspout
- Mark with chalk line on the fascia at the correct slope
For longer runs:
- Use TWO downspouts at ends (slope both directions from center high point)
- Or single downspout in middle (slope both directions to it)
Step 3: Form gutter sections (30-45 min per house)
If using seamless machine:
- Set machine to dimensions (5" K-style typical)
- Feed coil stock through; cuts to length needed
- Each section as long as the run requires (continuous = "seamless")
If using pre-cut sections:
- Cut to length with snips
- Sections joined with seam sealant + rivets
Step 4: Cut end caps + miters (15 min)
- End cap: aluminum cap formed to seal end of gutter run
- Inside miter: 90° inside corner (form from coil or use pre-made)
- Outside miter: 90° outside corner
- Apply gutter sealant to inside surface of joints
Step 5: Install hangers (10 min per run)
Hidden hangers (recommended, modern standard):
- Snap into top of gutter
- Screw into fascia behind gutter
- Spacing: 24-32 inches typical; 18-24 in heavy-snow areas
- Each end of every section: hanger within 6 inches
Spike + ferrule (older homes):
- Drive spike through gutter face into fascia
- Ferrule between gutter walls maintains spacing
Step 6: Install gutter (15-30 min per run)
- Position gutter against fascia at chalk line
- Hangers secure gutter to fascia
- Sections joined with seam sealant + rivets
- Verify proper slope (water test at end)
- End caps + miters sealed + riveted
Step 7: Install downspouts (15-30 min per house)
- Cut downspout to length (from gutter outlet to discharge point)
- Attach with downspout brackets every 6-10 ft + at every junction
- Use elbows at horizontal-to-vertical transitions
- Connect to underground drain OR splash block at grade
- Discharge: minimum 6 ft from foundation, slope away
Step 8: Test (15 min)
- Pour water in gutter at high point - verify flow to downspout
- Watch for ponding, slow flow, leaks at seams
- Check downspout discharge - water flowing away from house
Step 9: Cleanup + walkthrough
- Remove all packaging, cuttings
- Magnetic sweep for any dropped fasteners
- Customer walkthrough - show flow + discharge
Acceptance criteria
- Slope verified (1/4 inch per 10 ft)
- All seams sealed + leak-tested
- Hangers spaced per spec
- Downspouts secure + discharge correct
- No standing water in gutter
- Customer signoff

Common pitfalls
- No slope: water pools, debris settles, mosquito breeding
- Wrong slope direction: ponding away from downspout
- Hangers too far apart: gutter sags between, slow flow
- No discharge extension: water at foundation
- Sealing with wrong product: roofing caulk fails on gutters; use gutter-specific sealant
- No drip edge: water wicks under shingles, behind gutter
- Skipping inspection of fascia: rot continues under new gutter
Customer education
After install, customer should understand:
- 2x/year cleaning needed
- Gutter guards available as add-on
- Signs of trouble (overflow, sagging, water at foundation)
- Annual inspection recommended
Safety
- Ladder safety: 4:1 ratio, tie off, spotter
- Cut metal: cut-resistant gloves
- Power tools: GFCI protected
- No work in wind > 15 mph, rain, electrical hazards (10 ft from power lines)
The highest-leverage gutter-install detail: DOWNSPOUT DISCHARGE EXTENSIONS. Most installers connect to splash blocks at the foundation + call it done. The water pools at the foundation, saturates soil, eventually wicks up the basement walls. Always install a 4-6 ft extension OR underground drain tile to discharge water AWAY from the foundation. Costs in materials; prevents K-20K in basement repairs.
