Wire Termination Types Reference

Why this matters

Bad wire termination is the #1 cause of electrical fire + intermittent appliance failure. Loose connection = arcing = heat = ignition. Right termination = mechanical strength + electrical contact for decades. Field techs make 20+ terminations per day; the basics must be cold. This is the field card.

Wire nuts (twist-on splice connectors)

Color → wire combination (3M Ideal Wing-Nut, common):

  • Gray (Ideal 71B): 2 × #22 to 2 × #16
  • Blue (Ideal 72B): 2 × #22 to 2 × #14
  • Orange (Ideal 73B): up to 2 × #14 OR 3 × #18
  • Yellow (Ideal 74B): 2 - 4 × #14 OR 2 - 3 × #12
  • Red (Ideal 76B): 2 - 4 × #12 OR 2 - 4 × #10 OR mix
  • Gray Twister (large): 2 - 4 × #10 OR 2 - 3 × #8

Use: most common splice in junction boxes, light fixtures, outlets. Twist clockwise; pull-test each wire after.

Limits: indoor only (water + UV degrade), 600V max, not for stranded-to-solid mix without specific spec.

Push-in connectors (lever-nut style)

Wago 221 / 222 series: lever-clamp, fast, reliable. each.

  • Wago 221-412: 2-conductor, #20 - #12 AWG
  • Wago 221-413: 3-conductor
  • Wago 221-414: 4-conductor
  • Wago 221-415: 5-conductor

Faster than wire nuts; rated for solid + stranded + mixed; some codes still prefer wire nuts (regional inspector preference). Premium cost.

Wago 773 (push-in connectors): smaller, fixed. Solid only #18 - #12.

Ideal In-Sure: same concept, mid-tier brand.

Crimp connectors

Butt splices (insulated): two wires inline.

  • Red: #22 - #16
  • Blue: #16 - #14
  • Yellow: #12 - #10

Ring terminals (eye connector): for screw mounting.

Spade terminals (forked): partial-loop, easier removal.

Female disconnects (push-on): male tab connectors on appliances. Common 1/4" + 3/16" sizes.

Heat-shrink crimp (Ancor, 3M): adhesive-lined heat-shrink integrated; waterproof. Best for outdoor, marine, automotive. each.

Crimping tool: matches connector color. Ratchet-style for proper compression. Failed crimps = #1 cause of intermittent issues.

Heat shrink (over splice)

Standard adhesive-lined: 2:1 OR 3:1 shrink ratio. Heat with gun OR torch (carefully). Adhesive flows + seals waterproof.

Sizes: 1/16" - 2" diameter. Pick to fit relaxed; shrinks to ~50% post-heat.

Use: solder splice + heat shrink = best waterproof connection (better than crimp+heat shrink for very-long-life applications).

Solder splice (NM cable)

NOT code-compliant for new work in most jurisdictions (mechanical-only connection required). Acceptable for: equipment internal wiring, low-voltage signal, where specified.

Process: strip + twist (Western Union, lineman's splice, OR T-tap), apply rosin-core solder, heat shrink over.

Terminal blocks + barrier strips

Screw terminal block: multiple connections in one device. Common in HVAC control boards + appliance internal.

DIN-rail terminal blocks (Phoenix Contact, Wago): industrial control panels. Spring-cage OR screw clamp.

Barrier strip: open terminal with screws; older equipment.

Push-in spring terminal: factory-installed device (light switches), tool-less.

Backstab vs side-screw (outlets + switches)

Backstab (push-in): code-allowed but UNRELIABLE. Spring tension only; fails over time + many techs refuse to use them.

Side-screw (terminal): wire wrapped clockwise under screw, torqued to spec (typical 16 in-lb residential). MORE RELIABLE; standard for service work.

Pigtail: 6" #12 jumper terminated to outlet screw + connected to circuit conductors with wire nut. Allows daisy-chained outlets to NOT be affected when one outlet fails OR is replaced; also protects from miswire causing downstream outage.

Mechanical lugs (large conductors)

Compression lug (UL Listed for size): #8 AWG + larger. Crimped with hex die at specified pressure. Engraved for size + die required.

Mechanical (screw-type) lugs: solid OR stranded, set-screw clamping. Common on breaker terminations, service panel main lugs. Torque to spec (75 lb-in to 250 lb-in depending on size; per label).

Specific applications

Outlet receptacle backstab: skip; side-screw OR use spec-grade with rear-clamp.

Wire to circuit breaker: torque to label spec (varies 25 - 75 in-lb). Use calibrated torque screwdriver.

Service entrance (200A): compression lug + 4/0 copper OR larger; large-die crimp tool needed.

Outdoor splice: heat-shrink crimp OR wire nut + filled-with-gel weatherproof connector (King Innovation DryConn).

Underwater / submerged: epoxy-filled connector OR conduit body with conductor sealed beyond.

Pull-test (every splice)

Pull EACH conductor at every splice with 8 - 10 lb force. If any pulls out → re-do. This single test catches 80% of bad terminations.

Common termination mistakes

Wire nut twisted on insulation (not metal-to-metal contact = arcing). Backstab on solid #14 (loose over time). Crimping with stripper tool (not actual crimper = no compression). Mismatched wire-nut size (e.g., yellow on single #14 = loose). Over-stripping (bare wire showing past nut). Under-stripping (insulation under nut = no contact). Wrong wire-nut color for combo (loose splice). Mixing solid + stranded without proper spec wire nut. Skipping pull-test. Cold solder joint (didn't reach full melt; mechanically weak). Using consumer-grade tool on critical work.

Truck stock

Electrician: wire nuts (orange, yellow, red, gray) by 100s; Wago 221 (412, 413, 415); butt splices (multi-color); ring + spade terminals; heat-shrink assortment; crimper (ratchet); torque screwdriver.

HVAC: same plus quick-disconnect spades for blower motors + fan capacitors; 18 - 22 AWG thermostat wire splices.

Appliance: heat-shrink crimps for appliance wiring; high-temp connectors (range, dryer).

NEVER use a wire nut on a connection that vibrates regularly (motor terminals, conveyor wiring, vibration-prone equipment). Wire nuts work by mechanical thread bite; vibration loosens them over time. Use crimped connections + heat shrink for vibration applications. The failed wire nut on a furnace blower motor that came loose 2 years post-install = repeat callback + risk of arcing inside dry housing + possible fire. The crimp + heat shrink at install = 20+ year service life.
