Why this matters
When weather turns while a job is open, you are simultaneously managing crew safety, exposed building components, and your obligation to leave the site no worse than you found it, and the pressure to just finish so you do not have to come back is exactly what gets techs hurt and customers' homes water-damaged. The forces in tension are completing the work versus protecting people and property from rain, wind, lightning, heat, or cold that the original plan did not account for. The decision turns on whether continuing is safe for the crew, whether the exposed work can be temporarily protected, and whether stopping now leaves the building vulnerable. Reading this correctly keeps your crew off ladders in lightning and keeps water out of an open wall or roof; reading it wrong injures someone or floods an interior you are then responsible for.
The situation
You are mid-job with something open, exposed, or in progress when the weather changes: a storm rolls in, wind picks up, lightning starts, temperatures spike or drop, or steady rain begins on open work. You have to decide whether to dry-in and protect the work and keep going under cover, stop and secure the site for resumption later, or push to finish before it gets worse. The instinct to finish is strongest when the alternative is reopening everything on a return trip, but finishing in unsafe conditions or leaving exposed work unprotected both create larger problems than a return trip.
What is actually at stake
Crew safety comes first and overrides everything else: lightning, wind on ladders and roofs, lightning near anything conductive, heat stress, and footing on wet surfaces all injure people, and no schedule is worth that. Second is the building: an open roof, wall, or system exposed to driving rain can cause interior water damage that you may be responsible for, dwarfing the cost of stopping. Third is your own work: materials, adhesives, finishes, and connections that fail if installed in the wrong conditions create callbacks. Fourth is the schedule and the cost of a return trip, which is real but is the smallest stake and must never override the first three.
Decision factors
- Is there lightning or imminent severe weather? Lightning is a hard stop for anyone on a roof, a ladder, or in contact with conductive material. There is no tarp-and-continue option in a lightning storm.
- Is the crew safe to continue? Wet footing, high wind, heat index, or cold beyond safe working limits ends the work regardless of the building.
- Can the exposed work be protected fast? If you can dry-in or tarp the opening quickly and continue safely under cover, that may beat both stopping and rushing.
- Will stopping now leave the building exposed? An open envelope left unprotected can flood the interior. Securing it is not optional even if you stop.
- Will the conditions ruin the work if you continue? Some materials cannot be installed wet, cold, or hot; finishing in the wrong conditions guarantees a callback.
The decision
- Stop immediately, no exceptions. Lightning, severe wind, or any condition that makes the crew unsafe. Get people off roofs and ladders and out of the weather, then secure exposed work as conditions allow.
- Tarp/dry-in and continue. The crew can work safely under temporary cover, the opening can be protected quickly, and the conditions will not ruin the materials. Protect the work, then proceed.
- Secure and stop for resumption. Continuing is unsafe or would ruin the work, but the building must not be left open. Tarp, dry-in, or temporarily close the envelope to keep water out, then stop and plan the return.
- Finish. Only when you are essentially done, the remaining work is safe in the current conditions, and finishing actually closes the building up better than stopping would. Do not invoke this to avoid a return trip when conditions are unsafe.
Protecting the building when you stop
Stopping for safety does not relieve you of the obligation to leave the building no worse than you found it, and an open envelope left exposed to driving rain can cause interior water damage that costs far more than the entire job. Before anyone leaves, the open work has to be temporarily closed against water: a properly secured tarp, a dry-in layer, or a temporary closure that actually sheds water rather than collecting it. Anchor it so wind does not peel it back, and direct runoff away from openings, not into them. Photograph the protection in place so there is a record of the condition you left. A tarp that blows off overnight is worse than none because it gives false assurance, so over-secure it. The reason this matters so much is liability: if the building floods because the opening was left unprotected, the conversation is no longer about weather, it is about whether your crew took reasonable steps to protect the property, and the photographed, well-secured cover is your answer.
Lightning is an absolute stop for anyone on a roof, on a ladder, or handling long conductive materials. No portion of any job justifies staying exposed in a lightning storm. Get the crew down and inside, secure what you can from a safe position, and resume only after the storm has cleared per the recognized wait interval.
What to document
Record the weather event and time, the decision you made, how exposed work was protected (tarp, dry-in, temporary closure) with photos, the condition you left the site in, and any commitment for a return. If you stopped for safety, note the specific condition (lightning, wind, heat) that triggered it. If the building was secured against water intrusion, photograph the protection in place. This protects the company against both a water-damage claim and any question about why the job was not finished that day.
