Outdoor lighting types

Line voltage (120V):

  • Standard household voltage
  • Brighter, longer-distance
  • More expensive install (conduit, weather-tight)
  • Common for porch, garage, security lights

Low voltage (12V):

  • Transformer steps 120V down
  • Safer (low shock risk)
  • Easier install (less restrictive)
  • Common for landscape lighting

Solar-powered:

  • Standalone fixtures
  • No wiring needed
  • Battery storage
  • Less reliable / less bright
  • Newer LEDs improving

Battery-powered:

  • Standalone
  • Periodic battery replacement
  • Limited use

Light output

Lumens: actual light output

  • Old reference: incandescent watts
  • 60W incandescent = ~800 lumens
  • LED 8W = ~800 lumens (10× efficient)

For outdoor:

  • Porch: 200-400 lumens (intimate) to 1,000+ (welcoming)
  • Security flood: 1,500-5,000 lumens
  • Path light: 50-200 lumens each
  • Spotlight: 200-1,000 lumens

Color temperature

Measured in Kelvin (K):

  • 2,700K: warm (incandescent feel; cozy)
  • 3,000K: warm white
  • 4,000K: neutral / natural white
  • 5,000K: daylight (cool, security feel)
  • 6,500K: cool / industrial

For outdoor:

  • Most customers want 2,700-3,000K (warm)
  • Security may use 4,000-5,000K (alertness)
  • Avoid mixing temperatures in same area

Controls

Manual switch:

Photocell (dusk-to-dawn):

  • On at dark; off at light

  • No customer intervention

Timer:

Motion sensor:

Combination motion + photocell:

Voltage drop (low voltage)

In low-voltage systems, voltage drops over distance:

Causes:

  • Long wire runs
  • Small wire gauge
  • Many fixtures on same run

Effects:

  • Far fixtures dim
  • Uneven illumination
  • Reduced fixture life (some)

Solutions:

  • Use 12-gauge OR 10-gauge wire (low voltage)
  • Loop wiring (transformer at each end)
  • Multiple smaller transformers
  • Distribute load evenly

Installation considerations

Low-voltage:

  • Transformer near house (covered, weather-resistant)
  • Run wire to fixtures (direct burial OR conduit per code)
  • Connect fixtures (waterproof connections)
  • GFCI on transformer circuit

Line voltage:

  • Conduit required outdoor (PVC, EMT, RMC)
  • Weatherproof fittings
  • GFCI required for accessible
  • Permit + inspection often

Both:

  • Code compliance critical
  • Buried wire depth (12-24" typical)
  • Wire-to-fixture connections waterproof
  • Bonding + grounding

LED transition

Most outdoor lighting now LED:

Benefits:

  • Energy efficiency (10× incandescent)
  • Long life (10,000-50,000 hours)
  • Cool operation
  • Multiple color temperatures
  • Dimmable (with compatible controls)

Drawbacks:

  • Higher upfront cost
  • Heat dissipation matters (mount in airflow)
  • Driver failure common
  • Not all dimmer-compatible

Replacement:

  • Existing incandescent fixtures: LED bulbs replace
  • New install: LED fixtures (integrated; replaces driver too)
  • Check fixture compatibility before assuming

Common outdoor lighting problems

Light won't turn on:

  • Bulb burned out (replace)
  • Photocell failed
  • Loose connection
  • GFCI tripped (multiple lights affected)
  • Switch / control issue

Light flickers:

  • Loose bulb
  • Loose connection
  • Incompatible LED + dimmer
  • Failing fixture

Light on during day:

Light off at night:

One fixture out in low-voltage string:

Half the lights out:

  • Transformer issue (low-voltage)
  • One leg of circuit (line voltage)
  • Photocell shared with affected fixtures

Diagnostic process

For outdoor light issue:

  1. Check breaker (especially GFCI)
  2. Check bulb (replace; cheapest)
  3. Check switch / control (photocell, motion sensor)
  4. Check connections (corrosion at fixture, transformer)
  5. Check wiring (damage, breaks)
  6. Test fixture (multimeter for voltage; continuity)

Systematic; cheapest first.

Photocell troubleshooting

Photocell on photocell-controlled light:

  • Cover sensor: should turn ON
  • Uncover: should turn OFF
  • If not: replace photocell

Internal photocell (some fixtures):

  • Sometimes user-replaceable
  • Sometimes fixture replacement

External photocell (separate device):

  • Easy to replace
  • Test by covering / uncovering

Motion sensor adjustment

Range: distance sensor responds to Time delay: how long light stays on Daylight cutoff: sensitivity to ambient light

Each adjustable; some have multiple dials.

Common settings:

  • Range: medium
  • Time delay: 5-10 minutes
  • Daylight: only after dark

Pool / spa lighting

Code-critical:

  • GFCI required

  • Junction box specific

Common issues:

Service:

  • Whole string out (broken wire OR connection)
  • Whole string dim (voltage drop OR transformer issue)
  • Corrosion at sockets

Repair:

  • Spot-replace bulbs
  • Replace damaged sections
  • Sometimes replace entire string (cost-effective)
