Induction Cooking Conversion Reference

Why this reference exists

Switching from a gas range to induction is now one of the most-requested kitchen electrification projects. It saves indoor air quality (gas combustion releases NO2 + CO + ultrafines), takes advantage of new IRA credits, + customer-perceived performance (induction boils water in 90 seconds vs 5+ on gas) drives strong demand. Field crews handling the swap need to know the electrical, structural, + customer-experience details to quote + install correctly.

Induction is electric resistance's better cousin. Customer choosing electrification picks induction at 80%+ rate when shown both.

Cookware test

Magnet sticks to bottom of cookware = induction-compatible. Magnet doesn't stick = won't work on induction.

Compatible:

  • Cast iron, carbon steel, magnetic stainless, enameled cast iron

Incompatible:

  • Aluminum, copper, glass, ceramic, non-magnetic stainless

About 20-40% of existing cookware fails the magnet test. Budget for replacements. Converter discs work but cut efficiency badly.

Electrical requirements

Induction range/cooktop:

  • 240V, 40-50A dedicated circuit
  • 6-3 or 8-3 NM-B cable depending on amperage (wire chart by manufacturer)
  • NEMA 14-50 receptacle (range, plug-in) OR hardwired (cooktop)

For most gas-to-induction conversion, this means:

  • New 240V circuit from panel (existing gas range has no 240V)
  • Run wire to kitchen
  • New breaker
  • Possible panel upgrade if 100A service

This adds to the conversion cost. Some customers underestimate this.

Gas-line abandonment

When removing the gas range, the gas line needs proper termination:

  • Shut at meter or kitchen shutoff valve
  • Cap the line with a threaded gas cap (yellow or black malleable iron)
  • Sandard practice: leave shutoff valve in place + cap above
  • Test for leaks at cap (soap-water + pressure)
  • Some jurisdictions require permit for gas-line abandonment
  • Some jurisdictions require removal of unused line (full abandonment) for safety

Verify local code. Some allow capping in place; others require removal back to the manifold.

Range vs cooktop

Range (cooktop + oven combo): freestanding or slide-in. Common in mid-market kitchens. Easy swap - disconnect old, connect new.

Cooktop (drop-in or built-in): cooking surface only, no oven below. Common in premium kitchens. Cabinet cutout must match new cooktop dimensions exactly (within ±1/8"). New cooktop is often a different cutout - cabinet modification may be required.

Customer-choice rule:

  • Replacing same-style: simpler swap
  • Range to cooktop: cabinet modification needed
  • Cooktop to range: floor space + ventilation re-think

Ventilation

Induction range ventilation requirements are LESS stringent than gas (no combustion products + less grease aerosol). But still needed for grease + steam.

Existing range hood works if previously sized for resistance. If existing was sized for gas + over-vented kitchen, sometimes downsizing the hood saves makeup-air drama (tight modern home + 600 CFM hood = backdraft hazard).

Mounting height (over cooktop): 24-30" above cooking surface per manufacturer.

Cabinet + countertop considerations

Drop-in cooktops:

  • Cutout size MUST match manufacturer (varies by model)
  • 28-31" cutout typical for 30" cooktop
  • Filler strips if old + new cutout sizes differ
  • Granite + quartz countertops: cutout may need professional re-cutting () if expanding

Range slide-ins:

  • 30" or 36" width standard
  • 24-30" depth (verify cabinet depth)
  • Side anti-tip bracket per safety code

Installation procedure

Step 1: Pre-install survey

  1. Verify exact cooktop/range model + dimensions
  2. Inspect cabinet cutout (if cooktop)
  3. Run electrical load calc (existing panel + new 240V circuit)
  4. Verify gas-line shut-off location + path
  5. Confirm ventilation existing OR new requirement
  6. Photograph all of it

Step 2: Electrical

  1. Run 6-3 or 8-3 NM-B from panel to kitchen
  2. Conduit if exposed; in-wall through stud bays if finished
  3. New 40A or 50A double-pole breaker
  4. NEMA 14-50 receptacle (range) or junction box (cooktop)
  5. GFCI not required for kitchen ranges per NEC; AFCI per 210.12 may apply (check 2023 NEC adoption locally)

Step 3: Gas removal

  1. Customer's gas company OR licensed plumber shuts gas at meter (some jurisdictions require)
  2. Cap or remove unused gas line per local code
  3. Test for leak
  4. Document for code inspector + customer

Step 4: Cabinet prep

If cooktop:

  1. Remove existing cooktop
  2. Measure new cooktop cutout dimensions
  3. If matching: install new
  4. If different: cabinet modification (saw cut + finish trim)
  5. Mounting hardware per manufacturer

If range:

  1. Disconnect + remove old range
  2. Sweep + vacuum floor area
  3. Position new range
  4. Connect electrical
  5. Adjust feet for level
  6. Install anti-tip bracket

Step 5: Test + handover

  1. Verify voltage at receptacle (240V ± 5%)
  2. Test all burners + oven
  3. Verify timer + control panel
  4. Customer briefing:
  • Cookware compatibility (test magnet)
  • Surface stays cool (don't touch unless verified)
  • Cleaning (vinegar + baking soda; no abrasives)
  • Pause feature (small kids; protective when bumped)
  1. Document install + warranty registration

IRA tax credit + HEEHRA

Induction range/cooktop qualifies:

  • 25C: NO - induction NOT on the eligible list (heat pump, water heater are eligible; cooktop is not)

Customers without income eligibility don't get a credit for the cooking appliance itself. The wiring + panel work may qualify under broader electrification rebates depending on state program.
