EV Charger Plug Standards Reference
Why this reference exists
The U.S. EV charging market is transitioning from J1772 (legacy) + Tesla proprietary to NACS (North American Charging Standard, J3400) over 2024-2026. Customers walking into 2025 + 2026 will buy EVs with different connectors. A field electrician needs to know which charger to recommend, which adapter the customer needs, + what's coming. This is the working reference.
Plug standards (current + emerging)
SAE J1772 (Type 1 in international, "J-plug"):
- AC charging, 120V Level 1 + 240V Level 2
- North American standard 2009-2024
- 5 pins: 2 power + ground + signal + proximity
- Every non-Tesla EV sold in U.S. up through 2024
- Most residential Level 2 chargers (Wallbox, ChargePoint, Grizzl-E)
Tesla NACS / J3400 (formerly Tesla proprietary connector):
- AC + DC charging in one connector
- Adopted as SAE J3400 standard in 2023
- 5 pins (versatile - AC + DC fast charging on same connector)
- Tesla vehicles 2012-present
- Ford, GM, Hyundai, Rivian, Polestar, Volvo, Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Toyota, Lucid, Nissan moving to NACS for 2025 model year + beyond
CCS Combo 1 (Combined Charging System, North American variant):
- DC fast charging (50-350 kW)
- J1772 AC port + DC pins below for fast charging
- Non-Tesla EVs sold 2018-2024 use this for DC fast charging
- Found at Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint public stations
CHAdeMO:
- Older DC fast standard
- Nissan Leaf 2010-2022, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
- Phasing out; new vehicles don't use it
- Some adapters exist for backwards compat

The clear trend: NACS becomes universal for new sales 2025-2026.
Residential charging compatibility
For HOME (AC Level 2) charging, here's the recommendation matrix:
If customer has a Tesla:
- Tesla Wall Connector (NACS,)
- Or J1772 charger + J1772-to-NACS adapter (Tesla includes one with car)
- Adapter works fine; doesn't cap speed; some customers prefer it for flexibility
If customer has a non-Tesla 2024 or older:
- J1772 charger (most aftermarket: Wallbox, ChargePoint, Grizzl-E, etc.)
- Standard compatible
If customer has a non-Tesla 2025+ with NACS:
- Options:
- Tesla Wall Connector (NACS)
- J1772 charger + the included NACS-to-J1772 adapter (most 2025+ EVs ship with one)
- Wait for NACS aftermarket chargers (limited availability in 2025; widespread 2026)
Best universal home charger 2025:
- J1772 charger (handles all current EVs + 2025+ with adapter)
- Or Tesla Wall Connector with J1772 option (handles Tesla natively + others with adapter)
Charging speed by connector
All AC Level 2 chargers max at the lower of: charger amperage OR vehicle onboard charger capacity.
Vehicle AC onboard charger speeds:
- Tesla Model 3 / Y: 48A (11 kW)
- Tesla Model S / X: 48A
- Ford F-150 Lightning: 80A (19 kW) - only with HPWC 100A circuit; most residential 80A circuits cap at 48A continuous
- Most non-Tesla EVs: 32-48A (7-11 kW)
- Plug-in hybrids: 16-30A (3-7 kW)
A 48A charger on a 60A circuit charges most EVs at maximum speed. 80A circuits + chargers exist but are uncommon residential.
DC fast charging (away from home)
Customer rarely DC-charges at home (residential DC fast is impractical + expensive). DC fast charging happens at public stations:
- Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint DC: CCS Combo 1 (non-Tesla) + NACS (2024+)
- Tesla Supercharger network: NACS
- Cross-network: Ford/GM/Rivian/Hyundai/Kia + others now have Supercharger access via NACS adapter (depending on model + agreement)
Customer messaging: "Home charging covers 95% of your needs; DC fast is for road trips."
Adapter etiquette + reliability
Adapters work + are common:
- J1772-to-NACS (charger has J1772, car has NACS): use the adapter included with most 2025+ EVs
- NACS-to-J1772 (Tesla charger or Supercharger to non-Tesla car): use Tesla's included Mobile Connector adapter or aftermarket
Reliability: adapters add a connection point + therefore a possible failure point. Quality matters; cheap eBay adapters have caused melted connectors. Customer should use OEM or premium aftermarket (Lectron, etc.).
What changes for installers 2025-2026
Recommend to customers buying a charger today:
- Tesla owner: Tesla Wall Connector (NACS) - native fit, no adapter
- Non-Tesla 2024 or older: J1772 charger - native fit
- Non-Tesla 2025+ NACS car: J1772 charger + included adapter, OR wait for NACS aftermarket (limited in 2025)
- Multi-EV household, mixed connectors: J1772 with adapter (Tesla owners adapt their cars to J1772 with their included adapter)
For UNCERTAIN customer (buying EV in 2025-2026): J1772 is the safest 2025 install. Adapter solves NACS car. By 2026-2027, NACS aftermarket chargers reach price parity + become preferred.
Wattage + amperage labeling
For customer documentation + permit submission:
- 32A circuit (40A breaker): 6.1 kW continuous (NEMA 14-50 or 6-30)
- 40A circuit (50A breaker): 7.7 kW (NEMA 14-50 most common; 50A breaker)
- 48A circuit (60A breaker, hardwired only per NEC 625): 9.2 kW
- 80A circuit (100A breaker, hardwired only): 15.4 kW (rare residential)
Continuous load = 80% of breaker rating per NEC 210.20.
Mode 2 / Mode 3 Charging (international context)
Customer reading European EV literature may see "Mode 2" + "Mode 3":
- Mode 2: portable charger with control box in the cable (most North American Level 1 chargers are Mode 2)
- Mode 3: fixed wall-mounted charger (most North American Level 2 are Mode 3)
Most U.S. residential installations are Mode 3 (wall-mounted, hardwired or plugged via NEMA 14-50).
Wi-Fi + connectivity standards
Smart chargers (ChargePoint Home Flex, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, Tesla Wall Connector, Emporia, Grizzl-E Smart):
- Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n (2.4 GHz)
- Some support 5 GHz (verify)
- Bluetooth for initial setup (typically)
- App integration with vehicle (Tesla, Ford, GM, etc.)
Customer-side: check Wi-Fi signal at charger location BEFORE install. Garage Wi-Fi is often the weakest signal in the house.
The single most important sentence to a customer choosing a charger in 2025: "If you might buy a different brand of EV next time, get a J1772 charger - every brand has an adapter. If you're a Tesla family forever, get the Tesla Wall Connector." Future-proofing with J1772 is the safest call until NACS aftermarket is mature in 2026-2027.
