Tripped Breaker - Diagnostic Tree

Symptom

Customer reports a circuit breaker that has tripped, or trips again immediately when reset. A correct diagnosis separates a one-off overload (no underlying problem) from an arc fault, ground fault, or downstream short (all of which require remediation and are documented liabilities if missed).

Likely Causes

In order of probability for a typical residential service call:

  • Overload - too many high-draw loads on one circuit (space heater + vacuum, etc.)
  • Short circuit - hot-to-neutral or hot-to-ground contact, usually a damaged cord or a backstabbed device that's slipped
  • Ground fault - leakage to ground; AFCI/GFCI breakers trip on as little as 5 mA
  • Failed breaker - heat-damaged contacts, weakened spring, or end-of-life mechanism
  • Loose connection at the panel - bus tab, lug torque, or aluminum-on-copper junction

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Confirm the affected circuit. Have the customer identify which appliances or lights are off. Map them against the panel schedule if one exists; if not, build one as you go (high-value follow-on quote).
  2. Look at the tripped breaker handle position. Center position = tripped. Some breakers don't fully snap to OFF - push fully OFF before resetting.
  3. Unplug every load on the circuit. Reset the breaker. If it holds, plug loads back in one at a time. The load that causes the trip is the culprit.
  4. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring or the breaker itself. Continue to step 5.
  5. Test the breaker with a clamp meter on the panel feeder while toggling on/off. A breaker drawing inrush correctly should snap to a clean closed reading. Slow or erratic response = failed breaker.
  6. Megger the circuit at the panel with the breaker off and downstream loads disconnected. Reading should be > 1 MΩ between conductors and between each conductor and ground. Lower = compromised insulation.
  7. For AFCI/GFCI trips, press the TEST button to confirm the trip mechanism works, then RESET. Repeated trips with no clear load fault → replace the AFCI/GFCI breaker.

Resolution

  • Overload diagnosed: educate the customer on load distribution, no remediation needed beyond the conversation
  • Short circuit found: replace the damaged cord, device, or fixture; re-test
  • Ground fault on appliance: replace appliance or service it; the breaker is doing its job
  • Failed breaker: replace the breaker with same brand, type, and amp rating - never mix manufacturers in a panel
  • Loose connection at panel: torque to spec per the panel label and document amperage stamp on report

Never bypass an AFCI or GFCI breaker with a standard one to "stop the nuisance trips." If it's tripping, there is a fault. Bypassing creates fire and shock hazards and exposes you to liability.

Prevention

  • Recommend a panel labeling audit on every initial service call
  • Note any panels with known issues (FPE Stab-Lok, Zinsco, recalled Square D) on the customer record so future techs see the warning
  • Suggest whole-house surge protection at quote time if any breaker has tripped during a recent storm
