Three Way Switch Works From One End Only Decision Tree
Why this matters
A 3-way switch that controls the light from one box but not the other is one of the four classic 3-way miswire patterns, and every senior electrician has seen each of them. Most are not "bad switches"; they are wiring errors from a previous repair, a homeowner DIY, or an original installation that ignored the cable colors. NEC 2023 Article 404 governs switch terminations and the use of grounded conductors at switch locations; current code requires a neutral at the 3-way switch box to support smart switches and dimmers. The wrong call here is replacing the switch; replacing a switch on a miswired pair does nothing.
Symptom presentation
Test the symptom carefully. Operate the working-end switch first; the light cycles between two states (call them state-A and state-B). Now operate the dead-end switch. If the light does not change at all, classic miswire. If the light flickers or dims, the dead-end switch is partially making but its common is wrong. If the light always turns ON when the dead-end switch is in one position regardless of the other switch, the dead-end common is wired to a constant hot or constant neutral.
Document the box layout. A typical 3-way pair has the line cable entering one box (the "line box") and the load cable leaving the other box (the "load box"). Travelers connect the two. Some installations bring line and load to the same box and run only a 3-conductor cable to the dead-end switch; this is the "Carter wiring" topology and is a separate problem now prohibited in most jurisdictions.
Quick checks
Power off and pull both switches from their boxes. Identify the common terminal on each. On a Leviton, Pass and Seymour, Lutron, or Eaton residential 3-way, the common is the dark-colored screw (often black, sometimes labeled COM). The other two screws are travelers and they are interchangeable on the same switch.
Identify which cable wire is the common at each box. At the line box, the common should land on the line-hot from the panel. At the load box, the common should land on the load conductor going to the light. The two travelers between boxes should be in the 3-conductor cable between the boxes (usually red and black) and the white-jacket conductor is reserved for the neutral or for a switched-hot return per NEC 200.7(C)(2) re-identification rules.
Read the boxes with a meter. With the breaker on and both switches in random positions, the common of the line-box switch reads 120 V to neutral always. The common of the load-box switch reads 120 V to neutral when the light is supposed to be ON. The two traveler wires read 120 V opposite each other depending on switch position.
Isolation tree
Miswire pattern 1: traveler on common terminal. If the dead-end switch has a traveler wire on what should be the common terminal, swap the wires. The "always works from one end" symptom is classic.
Miswire pattern 2: line-hot on traveler. If at the line box the line-hot landed on a traveler instead of the common, the load gets power only when both switches happen to align. Re-land the line-hot on the common terminal.
Miswire pattern 3: load-out on traveler. Mirror image at the load box; load-out belongs on common.
Miswire pattern 4: dead-end common is open. The common wire was abandoned in a previous repair or never connected. Open the box and look for a capped or push-in wire not landing on a screw.
Miswire pattern 5: traveler cable cut. The 3-conductor between the two boxes was damaged (rodent, drywall screw, fish-tape pull). Continuity-test each conductor between the boxes with a known reference; an open traveler reads infinite. Pull a new cable or splice the break.
Confirming diagnosis
After re-terminating, test by cycling each switch independently. The light should change state with every toggle of either switch. If toggling one switch sometimes does nothing, the common is still wrong on that switch; retest with the meter and re-land.
Verify with a switch loop analyzer or a 3-way test plug if the layout is non-standard. For older homes with cloth-insulated cable, color codes are unreliable; the only reliable identification is by meter reading at each conductor under live conditions, with full PPE and lockout discipline as needed.
Remediation
Re-terminate per the standard 3-way topology: line-hot on common of switch 1, load-out on common of switch 2, travelers between switches. If neutral is required (smart switch or LED dimmer per NEC 404.2(C)), pull a neutral to both boxes if not already present. If pulling a neutral is infeasible, install no-neutral-required smart switches with bypass capacitors at the fixture.
Label the panel directory once the fix is verified so a future trade does not undo the work.
