Three-Way + Four-Way Switch Wiring
Overview
3-way + 4-way switch wiring is where tech errors compound - the wrong connection makes the switch "work" in some positions but not others, and the troubleshooting takes longer than the original install. This is the reference for getting them right the first time.
Specifications
Terminology:
- 3-way switch - two switches that together control one light fixture. (e.g., top + bottom of stairs)
- 4-way switch - third or more switch in a series controlling the same fixture
- Traveler wires - the conductors that run between the switches
- Common terminal - the screw on each 3-way switch that's a different color (usually black/dark). Connects either to the line OR to the load.
- Pivot point - physically inside the 3-way switch, this is the contact that "pivots" between the two travelers based on switch position
Materials
3-way switch terminals:
- 2 brass screws - these are the TRAVELER terminals (interchangeable)
- 1 black/dark screw - this is the COMMON terminal (specific position required)
- 1 green screw - equipment ground
4-way switch terminals:
- 4 brass screws - these are all TRAVELER terminals
- 1 green screw - equipment ground
Wire types in a 3-way circuit:
- Line wire (hot from breaker) - typically black
- Load wire (to the light fixture) - typically black
- Traveler wires (between switches) - typically red + black OR red + black + white (in a 4-conductor cable for 4-way circuits)
- Neutral - white, runs from breaker to the light fixture (some smart switches need this at the switch too)
- Equipment ground - green / bare
Performance
Standard 3-way wiring (two-switch control):
Switch A:
- Common (dark screw) → LINE WIRE (hot from breaker)
- Two travelers → connect to the two traveler terminals on switch B
Switch B:
- Common (dark screw) → LOAD WIRE (to the light)
- Two travelers → connect from switch A's traveler terminals
Operation:
- Switch A position 1 + Switch B position 1 = circuit closed → light ON
- Switch A position 1 + Switch B position 2 = circuit open → light OFF
- Switch A position 2 + Switch B position 1 = circuit open → light OFF
- Switch A position 2 + Switch B position 2 = circuit closed → light ON
Either switch flipping changes the circuit's state.
4-way wiring (three+ switch control):
- Two 3-way switches still at the ends (line + load)
- One 4-way switch in the middle
- 4-way switch swaps the travelers - its position determines which traveler-pair gets through
Safety
With 3-way switches energized, you CAN measure 120V between travelers if the switch positions are causing one traveler to be hot and the other cold. NEVER short travelers together while testing. Use a voltage tester between each traveler + neutral / ground; don't probe traveler-to-traveler under power.
Notes
- Identifying the common in an unknown 3-way: with the breaker on (and at a SAFE moment with proper PPE):
- Power off both 3-way switches simultaneously → one traveler reads 120V to neutral, the other reads 0V. Both travelers change voltage depending on the OTHER switch's position.
- The COMMON wire reads 120V continuously when the load is on.
- 3-way with a smart switch: smart 3-way switches typically require a NEUTRAL conductor at the switch box. Older 3-way installs don't have neutrals at switches; this is a common upgrade catch.
- Switching the WHITE wire: in some older installs, the white wire is used as a hot in 3-way wiring. NEC requires re-marking white wires used as hot - wrap with black or red tape. If you see a switched white without marking, that's a code violation worth flagging.
- 3-way with multiple LED bulbs flickering: dimmer/LED issue. 3-way dimmers exist; verify both switches are LED-compatible.
