Why this matters

Smart electric panels are the highest-margin specialty install in residential electrical 2024 - 2026. Customer cost. Margin: 30 - 45%. What smart panels do

Beyond a conventional load center, a smart panel adds:

Per-circuit monitoring: real-time amperage, voltage, energy use per breaker.

Remote breaker control: turn breaker on/off via app - useful for vacation, outage management, parental control.

  • Avoids separate sub-panel + transfer switch

When smart panel doesn't make sense

Budget-constrained customer with simple needs.

Customer not adding loads: smart panel is for managing load growth + electrification; existing-state customer gets monitoring + control but limited ROI.

Old wiring throughout home: smart panel can't fix old wiring problems; sometimes the conventional panel upgrade is what the home actually needs.

Install considerations

Replacing main panel (SPAN style):

  • Permit + utility coordination required
  • Service disconnect time: 4 - 6 hours typical
  • Notify customer of food/work/comfort impact
  • Pre-stage smart panel + wiring before disconnect
  • Coordinate inspection same day OR next day

Sub-panel install (Lumin style):

  • Less disruptive
  • Adds capacity for select circuits
  • May not require utility coordination
  • Permit usually required

Critical-load identification: walk customer through which circuits MUST stay on (refrigerator, freezer, well pump, sump pump, medical equipment) vs which are nice-to-have (entertainment, second AC, hot tub).

App + account setup:

  • Customer's account, not yours
  • WiFi connection (often 2.4 GHz only)
  • App download + walkthrough
  • Documentation of WiFi network + account email for future service

Customer experience features that close

The "vacation mode" demo: "Customer leaves for 2 weeks. Through the app, turns off hot water heater (saves energy), turns down HVAC (already smart), turns off recreational circuits (entertainment, hot tub). Returns to a partially-warmed-up house with full alarm + monitoring active throughout."

The "outage manager" demo: customer's battery has 10 hours of capacity. Smart panel shows which loads can run + for how long. Customer prioritizes refrigerator + sump pump + lighting; recreational loads stay off. Battery lasts 18 - 24 hours vs 4 hours of dumb "whole-house" backup.

The "EV charging optimizer": customer's EV charges off solar during day OR off grid at lowest off-peak rate at night. Smart panel coordinates with EV charger to make this happen.

Common install + commissioning issues

WiFi can't reach panel (mechanical room location): pull Ethernet OR install WiFi range extender.

Old wiring complicates load identification: time + budget for proper circuit mapping in commissioning.

Customer's expectations of "smart": set + verify what the platform CAN do vs what they expected. Demo the app live during commissioning.

Battery integration mis-coordination: SPAN + Tesla Powerwall pair natively but configuration must match the customer's intent (whole-home vs critical-loads backup).

App firmware updates: smart panels need regular updates; some require electrician to perform OR walk customer through.
