No Power Downstream After Device Replacement: Backstab vs Pigtail Decision Tree

Why this matters

When everything downstream of a just-replaced receptacle or switch goes dead, the culprit is almost always how the circuit's continuity was carried through that device. Many receptacles are wired in a daisy chain where line and load conductors land on the device, so the device itself completes the run to every box past it. If the original was backstabbed (push-in) and the replacement was too, a marginal spring contact or a missed stab breaks the chain. If the installer moved to side screws but only landed one cable, the downstream feed never gets reconnected. The professional standard is to pigtail line and load together so the device is not a series link in the circuit; failure to do so is exactly why "I changed one outlet and now three rooms are dead." Reading where continuity stops, at the device or past it, resolves it in minutes and prevents a heat-and-fire failure at an overloaded backstab.

Symptom presentation

A receptacle or switch was replaced, and now the replaced device may or may not work, but every device fed from it, outlets and lights farther down the run, is dead. The breaker is on and not tripped. Voltage is present at the line side of the replaced device but absent at the next box downstream. The dead section is contiguous along one circuit path, which signals a broken series link at the replaced device rather than a tripped breaker or a separate fault.

Quick checks

  • Confirm the breaker is on and the upstream voltage is present at the replaced device: read line-side hot-to-neutral at the device, should be about 120V.
  • Read voltage at the first dead box downstream; if it is 0V, continuity through the replaced device is broken.
  • Open the replaced device and count cables: a daisy-chained box has two (or more) cables; line carries power in, load feeds downstream. Verify both are landed and which terminals.
  • Inspect for backstab use: push-in holes occupied on the device back. Tug-test each backstabbed conductor; a loose one is the break.
  • Check that the downstream (load) hot and neutral were actually reconnected, not left capped or omitted when the device was swapped.

Isolation tree

Branch first on where voltage stops. Read the line side of the replaced device. If line-side is dead too, the problem is upstream, not at this device, look for an open feeding this box. If line-side is live but the downstream box is dead, the open is at the replaced device, proceed to the termination branch.

Termination branch: open the device and identify the line and load cables. If the device was backstabbed, the push-in contact for the load conductor may not be seated or its spring has lost tension; the downstream feed dies even though the device's own face may still have power. Confirm by metering continuity from the load-cable hot at the device to the next box. The fix is to abandon backstabs and land on side screws, ideally pigtailed.

Pigtail/landing branch: if the device is on side screws but downstream is still dead, check whether the load conductors were landed at all. A common error is landing only the line cable on the device and leaving the load cable capped or omitted, so power never continues. Confirm by tracing each cable: line should energize the device, a separate pigtail or the second-cable conductors should feed downstream. Re-land the load conductors and re-test.

Neutral-side sub-branch: a broken chain can be on the neutral instead of the hot. If the downstream box shows 120V hot-to-ground but the loads are dead, the downstream neutral path through the device is open. Check the neutral terminations and backstabs the same way; pigtail the neutrals so the device is not the sole neutral link.

Switch sub-branch: for a replaced switch that feeds power through (line and load plus a feed-through to other devices), a miswire on the line/load or an unterminated feed-through conductor kills downstream. Verify line vs load with the switch off and confirm any pass-through conductor is reconnected.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm by metering continuity across the device with power off. De-energize, then check continuity from the line-cable hot to the load-cable hot through the device's terminals or through the intended pigtail; an open reading where it should be closed proves the device or its terminations are the break. Energized, the decisive pair of readings is live at the replaced device's line side and dead at the first downstream box, which isolates the open to that device. A tug-test that pulls a backstabbed conductor free, or a continuity test that closes only when the load conductor is moved from a backstab to a screw, confirms the backstab as the failure. If re-landing a previously capped or omitted load conductor restores downstream power, that confirms the pigtail/landing error. Always re-verify the neutral path the same way, since a half-fixed hot with an open neutral leaves loads dead.

Remediation

Reterminate the device to carry the circuit reliably. Remove all backstab/push-in connections and land conductors on the device's side screws, or better, pigtail line and load together with a listed connector and run a single pigtail to the device so the device is not a series link in the circuit (this is the durable standard and keeps full circuit current off the device's stabs). Land both hot and neutral pigtails; never leave a downstream conductor capped when the run must continue. Torque side-screw terminals to spec and ensure the conductor wraps the screw correctly. For switches feeding through, reconnect any pass-through conductor and verify line/load orientation. After reterminating, energize and confirm about 120V at every previously dead box and verify all downstream loads operate, then re-check the neutral by loading the downstream devices.
