New Fixture Hums Or Flickers From First Power Decision Tree
Why this matters
A new fixture that hums audibly or flickers from the moment it is first energized is rarely a defective lamp. The usual causes are a control mismatch (an incompatible dimmer or a switch with leakage), a missing or shared neutral, a low-quality or overloaded LED driver, or a loose termination introducing impedance. Because the symptom appears at commissioning, the customer assumes the fixture is bad and wants it replaced. A structured tree separates the few real fixture defects from the install and control issues that a swap would not fix, so you correct the actual cause and avoid a second warranty fixture failing the same way.
Symptom presentation
- Audible 60 Hz or 120 Hz hum from the fixture or its driver, steady or load-dependent.
- Visible flicker at full brightness, at low dim levels, or only while dimming.
- A faint glow or "ghosting" when the switch is off.
- Flicker that changes when other loads on the circuit cycle.
- Strobing visible on camera but barely to the eye, worsening at low dim.
Quick checks
- Confirm the dimmer is rated for LED loads and meets the fixture's minimum load; a line-voltage dimmer below its minimum wattage flickers and hums.
- Verify the fixture has a dedicated, continuous neutral and is not running on a switch loop that lacks a neutral or borrows one from another circuit.
- Check voltage at the fixture: 120 V +/- 5% line to neutral. Low or sagging voltage under load points to a feed problem.
- Confirm the fixture is dimmable if it is on a dimmer; a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer hums and flickers by design.
- Look for ghosting: a faint off-state glow signals leakage current, often a smart switch or an electronic dimmer feeding a low-load LED with no neutral.
Isolation tree
Step 1. Bypass the dimmer with a known-good standard toggle switch.
- Hum and flicker stop: the control is the cause. Replace the dimmer with a model rated for the LED load and confirm minimum-load compatibility. Done.
- Symptom persists on a plain switch: the control is not the cause. Go to Step 2.
Step 2. Meter the fixture neutral. Lift it and ohm to the panel neutral, and verify it is not shared.
- Open or high-resistance neutral: re-terminate. A loose neutral causes flicker and hum under load.
- Neutral shared with another circuit (multiwire branch with a swapped pairing) so the fixture sees imbalance: re-pair the multiwire branch correctly on opposite legs with a common neutral, or pull a dedicated neutral.
- Neutral solid and dedicated: go to Step 3.
Step 3. Measure line-to-neutral voltage at the fixture under load and watch for sag.
- Voltage sags below 114 V when other loads run: the circuit feed or a connection upstream is high-impedance. Trace and retorque terminations from the panel forward; check the breaker termination and any backstabbed devices.
- Voltage steady: go to Step 4.
Step 4. Swap in a second known-good fixture or driver on the same feed and control.
- New fixture is quiet and stable: the original fixture/driver is defective. Replace under warranty.
- New fixture also hums or flickers: the cause is the control-plus-load combination (an electronic dimmer marginal for this driver) or residual leakage. Add a neutral path for the dimmer, or install a manufacturer load-correction/bypass device sized for the load.
Step 5. If flicker correlates with other loads on the same circuit cycling, check for a shared neutral or a circuit near capacity.
- Flicker pulses when a motor or heater on the same circuit starts: voltage dip from a high-impedance shared path. Move the lighting to its own circuit or correct the upstream termination causing the impedance.
- Flicker is independent of other loads: stay on the fixture/control path above.
Confirming diagnosis
A control-caused fault clears on a plain switch and stays clear once a properly rated dimmer with adequate minimum load is installed. A neutral fault shows open or high resistance on the lifted neutral and resolves once a continuous dedicated neutral is in place. A feed/termination fault shows measurable voltage sag that disappears after retorquing. A true fixture defect reproduces on a verified-clean feed and control and clears only by replacing the fixture or driver. Document the dimmer model, the under-load voltage, and the swap result.
A useful confirming test for off-state ghosting: with the switch off, meter line-to-neutral at the fixture. A smart switch or electronic dimmer with no neutral leaks a small current through the load to power its own electronics, and that trickle lights a low-load LED faintly and can hum it. Reading a few volts to tens of volts at an "off" fixture confirms leakage-driven ghosting, which is resolved by providing the switch a neutral or installing the manufacturer's bypass/load device, not by replacing the fixture.
Remediation
- Incompatible or under-loaded dimmer: install a dimmer listed for the LED load with a minimum-load rating at or below the fixture draw; add a load-correction device if the manufacturer specifies one.
- Missing or shared neutral: pull a dedicated continuous neutral; correct multiwire branch pairing so the shared neutral lands on opposite legs.
- Loose or backstabbed termination: re-terminate under screw pressure and torque to spec; eliminate backstab connections on the affected run.
- Voltage sag from upstream impedance: retorque the breaker and all in-line terminations; verify conductor sizing for the run length.
- Confirmed defective driver/fixture: replace under warranty and re-commission on the corrected feed.
