GFCI, AFCI, and DFCI Protection Selection by NEC Article

Why this matters

The NEC's overlapping protection requirements for ground-fault, arc-fault, and dual-function devices have grown to the point where the right device for a given circuit is no longer obvious to anyone who is not running rough-ins every day. Pick the wrong device and the inspector flags it, the device nuisance-trips and the homeowner blames the electrician, or worse, the protection a code change required is absent entirely. This reference is a working tradesperson's cheat sheet on what device covers what, where the 2017, 2020, and 2023 NEC updates have moved the lines, and how to pick between a breaker, a receptacle, and a hybrid device when the install allows a choice.

Definitions and basic operation

  • GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter): opens the circuit when current on the hot and neutral conductors becomes unbalanced by 4 to 6 mA. A current path to ground is the canonical signal of a person becoming the path. NEC Article 100 references UL 943 for the device standard.
  • AFCI (Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter): senses the high-frequency current signature of a parallel or series arc fault, the kind of arc that starts a fire in damaged Romex or behind a loose receptacle. Combination AFCI (the type required for branch circuit protection since 2014) detects both series and parallel arcs. References UL 1699.
  • DFCI (Dual-Function Circuit Interrupter): a single device that provides both GFCI and combination-AFCI protection. References both UL 943 and UL 1699. The market term "Dual Function" is used by manufacturers; the NEC does not require dual-function devices, it requires whichever combination of protections applies to the location.
  • SPGFCI (Special-Purpose GFCI): Class C, D, E, or F device with trip thresholds higher than 6 mA, used on equipment circuits where standard GFCI nuisance trips are intolerable but personnel protection is still required. Most commonly seen on commercial heat-trace and freezer circuits.

Where GFCI is required (residential, 2023 NEC)

NEC Section 210.8(A) lists the locations:

  1. Bathrooms
  2. Garages and accessory buildings with floor at or below grade
  3. Outdoors (with limited exceptions)
  4. Crawl spaces at or below grade
  5. Unfinished basements
  6. Kitchens, where receptacles serve the countertop, plus all receptacles within 6 ft of the sink edge
  7. Sinks of any kind in dwelling units (laundry sink, bar sink, utility sink)
  8. Boathouses
  9. Bathtubs and shower stalls (within 6 ft, as the receptacle would be prohibited but if installed for specific purpose, GFCI required)
  10. Laundry areas (added in 2017 NEC)
  11. Indoor damp and wet locations
  12. Dishwasher branch circuit (added 2014 NEC)

The 2020 NEC added requirements for 250V receptacles in the same locations (e.g., the wall receptacle behind a 240V kitchen range). The 2023 NEC extended GFCI requirements to specific outdoor equipment and clarified the exception for snow-melt and de-icing equipment.

Where GFCI is required (commercial)

NEC Section 210.8(B) extends GFCI requirements to commercial:

  • All 125V single-phase, 15 and 20A receptacles in bathrooms, kitchens, rooftops, outdoors, sinks, indoor wet locations, locker rooms with showers, garages and service bays, and crawl spaces
  • 2020 NEC extended to 250V single-phase 50A receptacles
  • 2023 NEC further expanded; check the local edition

NEC Section 210.8(F), added in 2020, requires GFCI on outdoor receptacles serving dwelling-unit heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. This caused a wave of HVAC contractor complaints because many condensing units and heat pumps trip the GFCI on startup. The 2023 NEC clarified that protection must be installed; manufacturers have responded with equipment-rated leakage limits.

Where AFCI is required

NEC Section 210.12 (dwelling units):

  • All 120V, 15 and 20A branch circuits supplying outlets and devices in kitchens, family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways, laundry areas, and similar rooms or areas

The 2020 NEC expanded the list to include guest rooms and guest suites in hotels and motels (210.12(C)).

The 2023 NEC clarified that AFCI is required for the entire branch circuit, not just the first outlet, and that combination AFCI is the only acceptable type for new installs (branch/feeder AFCI is no longer compliant for new branch circuits).

Notable exceptions:

  • Bathrooms, garages, and unfinished basements do not require AFCI (they require GFCI)
  • Smoke alarm circuits in a dedicated branch may have an exception in some local adoptions; verify locally
  • Outdoor branch circuits and certain dedicated equipment circuits (HVAC) do not require AFCI

Where DFCI is the practical choice

A DFCI is required (in functional terms) wherever both GFCI and AFCI requirements overlap on the same circuit:

  • Kitchen 20A small-appliance branch circuits: GFCI required (countertop) + AFCI required (kitchen). Use a DFCI breaker or a combination AFCI breaker with downstream GFCI receptacles.
  • Laundry 20A branch: GFCI required (laundry area sink rule and 2017 expansion) + AFCI required (laundry area is on the AFCI list since 2014).
  • Dishwasher branch: GFCI required + AFCI required (kitchen).

For these circuits the DFCI breaker at the panel is the cleanest single-device solution and is what most production builders specify.

Where SPGFCI applies

NEC 250.6 and Article 426 (heat trace) reference Special-Purpose GFCI for equipment that nuisance-trips standard 6 mA Class A devices:

  • Pipe heat trace and roof de-icing systems
  • Walk-in freezer and cooler equipment branch circuits
  • Some commercial sign branch circuits

SPGFCI trip thresholds are typically 30 mA personnel-protected, with equipment-level leakage budgets allowed up to 6 mA per linear foot of heated cable. Verify the manufacturer's leakage budget and select the SPGFCI rating to match.
