Generator Interlock Kit vs Automatic Transfer Switch

Why this matters

Two methods exist to connect a generator to a home's electrical system safely. The interlock kit is a moderate mechanical accessory plus a 30A inlet box. The automatic transfer switch (ATS) is a moderate listed device. Both prevent backfeeding (the deadly hazard of generator power flowing back through the utility transformer and into the lines a utility worker is trying to repair). They differ in convenience, code acceptance, generator-side capability, and price. Recommending the wrong one for a customer's situation is a months-long mismatch they will resent and call back to redo. Knowing which fits each scenario is what separates the contractor who closes the generator install from the one who quotes both and confuses the customer.

What backfeed is and why it matters

If a generator is connected to a home circuit while the utility supply is also energized, current flows two ways. The generator energizes the home; the utility transformer steps that voltage up; the utility distribution lines become live downstream from a generator-only connection. A line worker who opened the local disconnect and verified dead voltage at the utility side may be killed when a backfed generator re-energizes the line.

NEC 702 (Optional Standby Systems) requires that a backfeed-prevention device interrupt the utility connection when a generator is supplying power, AND interrupt the generator connection when the utility is supplying power. Both can never be on simultaneously.

Two listed methods accomplish this:

  1. Interlock kit (manual, mechanical)
  2. Transfer switch (manual or automatic, electrical)

A third method - the suicide cord, an extension cord wired male-to-male used to backfeed a panel through a receptacle - is illegal in every jurisdiction and a documented cause of utility-worker fatalities. Never recommend, never install.

Interlock kit

A metal slide plate mounts on the panel cover. The slide physically prevents the main breaker and the generator-feed breaker from being on at the same time. When the customer flips the main off, the slide moves and allows the generator-feed breaker to be turned on. When utility power returns, the customer reverses: turn off the generator-feed, slide the plate, turn on the main.

The interlock kit is brand-specific (Square D, Eaton/Cutler-Hammer, Siemens, General Electric, etc.) and must be listed for the panel it is installed on. A generic interlock on a brand it is not listed for is not code-compliant.

Inlet box (the exterior receptacle where the generator plugs in): typically NEMA L14-30 (30A 250V locking) for portable generators. A 4-prong inlet matches the generator's 4-prong outlet.

Manual transfer switch

A separate enclosure mounted next to the panel with a switch that toggles between utility and generator sources. Pre-wired to specific circuits (typically 6 to 12 selected circuits, called "essential loads"), the manual transfer switch lets the customer power those specific circuits from generator without ever touching the main panel.

Automatic transfer switch (ATS)

An ATS senses utility power loss, starts the generator, transfers load to generator within 10 to 30 seconds, runs the home on generator, and transfers back to utility when power returns. The customer does nothing; the system runs itself.

ATS brands typically pair with their generator brand. Generac generators use Generac ATS; Kohler with Kohler. Mixing brands is possible but requires verification of the control interface.

Capacity considerations

The interlock kit is limited by the inlet box capacity. A 30A 240V inlet = 7.2 kW total. Most portable generators in the 5 to 8 kW range work fine. Larger portables (9 kW, 12 kW, 15 kW) need a 50A inlet box or larger.

The manual transfer switch is similarly limited by inlet capacity.
