Doorbell Transformer and Chime Troubleshooting
Symptom
Customer reports the doorbell isn't ringing, is ringing intermittently, hums constantly, or stopped working after installing a smart video doorbell. This is among the most common low-voltage service calls - fast to diagnose, easy to misquote, and almost always solvable in one trip when you know the decision tree.
Likely causes
In approximate order of frequency in service:
- Failed pushbutton at the door - 30 percent of calls. The button gets weathered, the spring contact corrodes, the wire under the button loosens
- Transformer voltage too low for the chime or smart doorbell - 20 percent. The original 8 VA mechanical-chime transformer cannot run a Ring or Nest doorbell that wants 16-24 V at 30 VA
- Failed chime unit (mechanical or electronic) - 15 percent. Plungers stick, solenoids burn out, electronic boards fail after a power surge
- Broken wire run between button, chime, and transformer - 15 percent. Often where the wire passes through a door frame and gets pinched
- Failed transformer - 10 percent. Especially older 8 VA units that have been driving smart doorbells beyond rating
- Tripped breaker on the transformer's branch circuit - 5 percent
- Customer-installed smart doorbell missing the diode or resistor - 5 percent. The chime hums or buzzes constantly because the smart doorbell back-feeds AC through the chime coil
Diagnostic steps
Step 1: Identify the topology
Most residential doorbell wiring has three nodes: the transformer (often on a junction box near the panel or behind the chime), the chime, and the pushbutton. The wiring is two-conductor low-voltage cable, usually 18/2 thermostat-style. Smart doorbells (Ring, Nest, Eufy) typically retain the original wiring but draw far more power than a passive button.
- Identify the transformer location - common locations: behind the chime, in the basement near the panel, on the back of a closet wall, in the attic
- Locate the chime - usually in a hallway or central wall
- Pop the button cover off and verify the button type - mechanical contact, illuminated, or smart-doorbell
Step 2: Measure transformer output
- With power on, place a multimeter across the two transformer secondary terminals
- A correctly wired transformer reads:
- 8 V for older mechanical chimes
- 16 V for newer electronic chimes or smart doorbells
- 24 V for some commercial chimes
- Compare against the spec on the transformer label
- No voltage at the transformer secondary → transformer failed, primary breaker tripped, or primary wires loose at the J-box
- Voltage present but below spec → transformer is failing under load or undersized for what's connected
Step 3: Test continuity to the button
- Disconnect the two wires at the transformer secondary
- Walk to the doorbell button and short the two button-side wires with the button removed (or press the button)
- Have a helper read continuity at the transformer end - closed circuit when the button is pressed, open when released
- No continuity → broken wire run somewhere between transformer and button
- Always closed → button shorted or wires shorted in the wall
Step 4: Test the chime
- With transformer secondary connected, manually short the front-door pushbutton terminals at the chime
- Mechanical chime should strike
- Electronic chime should play its assigned tune
- No sound → chime failed
- Continuous sound (buzzing) → solenoid stuck or smart-doorbell back-feed without proper isolation
Step 5: Smart doorbell diagnosis
If a customer-installed smart doorbell is in the loop:
- Verify the device specs - most smart doorbells need 16-24 V AC at 10-30 VA
- Check that the manufacturer's "Pro Power Kit" or jumper module is installed at the existing chime per the install guide
- Without the kit, smart doorbells often draw current through the chime coil 24/7 to charge their internal capacitor, causing the chime to buzz or vibrate
- The fix is either install the manufacturer's chime-kit module or upgrade the chime to a dedicated smart-compatible electronic chime
- Older 8 VA transformers cannot run smart doorbells at all - verify rating and upgrade
Resolution
- Failed button - replace with a like-for-like or upgrade to illuminated. Re-strip wire to fresh copper, tin the strands if older corroded conductor
- Low transformer voltage / undersized - install a 16 V 30 VA transformer at the existing primary location. Most jurisdictions allow the transformer to mount inside a junction box on the line side of the chime
- Failed chime - replace with matching front/rear-button capability. Electronic chimes need a 16 V transformer
- Broken wire run - diagnose with a tone generator and probe. Re-run new 18/2 if the existing is buried in inaccessible walls
- Smart doorbell buzz - install the manufacturer's chime kit per their wiring diagram, OR replace the chime with a smart-compatible model
Prevention
- During any door replacement or trim work, verify the doorbell wires are still intact before reassembling the trim
- When installing a smart doorbell, always specify the transformer upgrade and the chime kit in the same quote - never half-do the job
- Document the transformer location for the customer file so future service is faster
Doorbell wiring is low-voltage but the transformer's primary is 120 V - when you pop a chime cover or open a transformer junction box, you're working in a mixed-voltage box. De-energize the primary at the breaker before opening the J-box, even if you only plan to touch the secondary terminals.
