Dead Outlet on a Live Circuit - Diagnostic Tree

Symptom

Customer reports one or more outlets that don't work, but the breaker isn't tripped + other outlets on the same circuit are working. This is the most common "outlet won't power my [thing]" service call. Diagnosis is fast - the typical cause is a tripped GFCI somewhere downstream - but a few less-obvious causes catch techs who skip steps.

Likely Causes

In order of frequency:

  • Tripped GFCI elsewhere in the home (bathroom, garage, outdoor, kitchen) - 35 % of these calls
  • Loose backstabbed connection at an outlet upstream in the daisy chain - 25 %
  • Failed outlet itself (worn contact internally) - 15 %
  • Loose connection at the wire nut in a junction box - 10 %
  • Tripped AFCI breaker (looks tripped if you don't know what you're looking at) - 5 %
  • Customer-plugged switch (the outlet is wired to a wall switch they didn't flip) - 4 %
  • Loose conductor at the breaker terminal - 3 %
  • Other - 3 %

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Verify the customer's understanding. Is the outlet REALLY dead, or did the customer test with a known-failing appliance? Test with a plug-in lamp the tech brings.
  2. Find and test every GFCI in the home. A bathroom GFCI can protect outlets in an entirely different room - especially in kitchens, garages, and outdoor circuits.
  • Press RESET on each GFCI
  • Re-test the affected outlet after each reset
  1. Verify the breaker. Some "tripped" breakers don't visibly look tripped - they sit at the OFF position. Push fully OFF, then ON, while watching.
  2. For AFCI breakers: AFCIs reset like a regular breaker BUT the trip indicator is subtle. Push firmly OFF, then ON.
  3. If GFCI + breaker investigation doesn't reveal the cause:
  • Cut power at the breaker
  • Remove the dead outlet from the box
  • Visual inspection: discoloration, loose backstab connections, evidence of overheating
  • With power off, gently wiggle each wire at the outlet's terminals. Loose connections often reveal themselves
  1. If the outlet appears OK at first inspection: trace UPSTREAM. The dead outlet may receive power through another outlet in the chain that has a loose backstab.
  2. Test each outlet's wiring with a multimeter from the breaker to the dead outlet's terminals. Voltage drops anywhere = found the issue.

Resolution

  • Tripped GFCI: reset + identify what caused the trip (typically a load fault elsewhere; sometimes nuisance trips on outdoor GFCIs from moisture). Don't keep resetting without investigating.
  • Loose backstab upstream: replace the upstream outlet AND use screw terminations on the new one. Backstabs that loosen tend to recur.
  • Failed outlet: replace with a new one + screw connections.
  • Loose wire-nut connection: open the junction box, re-strip + re-connect with a new wire-nut.
  • Tripped AFCI: reset + investigate the load that caused the trip.
  • Wired to a wall switch: customer education; mark the outlet OR install an "always on" outlet on the same box if customer prefers.

A "dead outlet" customer may have plugged a high-load device into the outlet that overheated the wires + caused a melted neutral OR an arcing fault. If you find ANY discoloration, melted plastic, or burn smell at the outlet, this is now an URGENT repair, not a "dead outlet" repair. Inspect the wiring carefully + downstream outlets; the damage may not be limited to the visibly dead outlet.

Prevention

  • Annual electrical inspection catches loose backstabs before they completely fail
  • Replace backstabbed outlets during any service call where they're encountered
