Saltwater Pool Deck Fastener Selection (316 vs 305 Stainless)
Why this matters
A pool deck looks like a regular deck until it is not. Chlorinated pools are aggressive; saltwater pools are more aggressive; oceanfront pools are the worst environment a screw will ever see. Picking 305 stainless because it is cheaper than 316 and shaving 30 percent off the fastener bill is the single fastest way to be replacing pitted screws in three years on a deck warrantied for ten.
The corrosion chemistry
Saltwater pools generate free chlorine by electrolysis of dissolved sodium chloride. The water carries chloride ions, which attack the chromium-oxide passive film that protects austenitic stainless steel. Once the film fails, pitting corrosion starts; pits propagate through the head and shank, and the fastener loses tensile strength without any visible rust because the damage is below the surface.
- 304 / 18-8 stainless: 18 percent chromium, 8 percent nickel. Resists fresh water and indoor environments. Not appropriate for any pool deck.
- 305 stainless: 18 percent chromium, 11 to 13 percent nickel. Slightly better than 304 for cold-heading screws. Marketed as marine grade by some packagers but is not actually marine grade.
- 316 stainless: 16 to 18 percent chromium, 10 to 14 percent nickel, 2 to 3 percent molybdenum. The molybdenum is what stops chloride pitting. This is the real marine grade.
- 316L: lower carbon variant of 316, used for welded assemblies. Same corrosion resistance.
What to specify by site exposure
The IRC and the major decking manufacturers defer to ASTM A153 (galvanizing) and the AISI stainless grades. Practical specification:
- Inland fresh-water swimming pool, indoor or outdoor: 305 acceptable, 316 preferred
- Outdoor saltwater swimming pool, any latitude: 316 required
- Outdoor pool within 1 mile of saltwater coastline: 316 required, with 316 hardware on every connector including hangers and post caps
- Direct splash zone at oceanfront pools: 316 required and inspect annually for surface tea-staining
Hidden-fastener clips on pool decks
Hidden-fastener systems for grooved composite boards (Cortex, Camo Marksman Pro, Trex Universal, TigerClaw) ship in either 305 or 316. The 316 version is always identified on the box and is typically the more-expensive part number. Buying the 305 clip and using a 316 screw with it puts mixed metals in contact in a wet environment and accelerates galvanic corrosion of the clip. Match the metal across the clip-and-screw assembly.
Galvanic compatibility with connectors
Galvanized joist hangers (G185 hot-dip) in contact with stainless decking screws are mildly mismatched but acceptable inland. At a saltwater pool deck, all of the following should be 316 stainless:
- Joist hangers and angle clips
- Post caps and post bases
- Through-bolts at the ledger and at notched-post details
- Lag screws or structural screws at the ledger
- Railing post hardware
- Deck-board screws and hidden clips
Stainless connectors are available from Simpson Strong-Tie in 316 (look for the SS suffix or the explicit "Type 316" callout on the catalog page) and from USP / MiTek under their stainless line.
Lifecycle expectation
A 316 stainless deck assembly at a saltwater pool, installed correctly with stainless-to-stainless contact, has no practical service-life limit on the fasteners; the deck board fails first. A 305 stainless assembly in the same environment typically shows visible pit corrosion within 5 to 8 years and loses meaningful tensile capacity in 10 to 15.
Tea-staining (rusty orange streaks at fastener heads) on 316 stainless is a surface phenomenon and not structural failure, but it indicates iron contamination from carbide tools used during fabrication. Specify passivated 316 fasteners for visible-head applications at saltwater pools and use a clean stainless bit when driving.
Documentation for the customer
Provide a written fastener schedule on every pool deck job: grade, manufacturer, ASTM specification, and where each grade is used. This protects against warranty claims and gives the homeowner what they need for insurance documentation after a hurricane or flood event.
