Why this matters

A composite deck shows uneven board gaps, squeaks, lifted edges, or shifting boards, and the crew used a hidden-clip system across Trex, TimberTech, or Fiberon boards as if the spacing and clip were interchangeable. They are not. Each manufacturer specifies its own groove profile, clip, gap, and joist spacing, and warranty coverage hinges on following the matching install guide. Mixing a clip from one system into another board's groove, or carrying one system's spacing onto a different board, produces exactly these defects. This fault tree isolates whether the problem is clip/board mismatch, wrong joist spacing, wrong gap, or install-temperature error so the repair follows the correct manufacturer detail and keeps the warranty intact.

Symptom presentation

Characterize the defect:

  • Inconsistent end-to-end gaps and buckling: thermal expansion not accommodated, often wrong gap or wrong clip.
  • Edges lift or rock at the clip line: clip not seating in the groove (profile mismatch) or joist spacing too wide.
  • Squeak/click underfoot at clips: clip-to-groove looseness or wrong-system clip.
  • Boards slide laterally over time: clip does not lock the board the way the matched system does.

Note which product is installed (board stamp or order records) and which clip was actually used (pull one). Cross-system use is the most common root.

Quick checks

  1. Confirm the board brand and line, then confirm the clip is that brand's matched clip. Trex uses its Hideaway clip; TimberTech/AZEK uses CONCEALoc; Fiberon uses its Phantom/hidden system. A foreign clip in the groove is an immediate fail because each groove geometry and clip barb are dimensioned to each other.
  2. Measure joist spacing. Each maker publishes a maximum on-center for perpendicular and a tighter maximum for angled (45-degree) installs; commonly the perpendicular max is 16 inches and the diagonal max drops to 12 inches. Field spacing carried onto a diagonal run is a classic fault that shows up as edge flex and squeak.
  3. Measure end and side gaps against that brand's table for the install temperature. Gaps set tight on a cold day buckle in summer; the same boards installed hot and gapped wide leave loose visible joints in winter.
  4. Check clip pitch (one clip per joist, none skipped) and that the clip is fully seated and screwed to the maker's torque, not over-driven. An over-driven clip crushes the groove and pins the board so it cannot float, which buckles it on the next hot day.
  5. Identify the install temperature versus the current temperature. A board installed near freezing has its maximum length still ahead of it; that history changes how you read every gap.

Isolation tree

Start with clip/board match.

  • Clip does not match the board brand/groove: profile mismatch. The clip cannot grip correctly. Replace with the matched system clip. This alone resolves most lift/slide/squeak. Voids warranty until corrected.
  • Clip matches the board: go to the spacing branch.

Spacing branch:

  • Joist spacing exceeds the maker's maximum for the install angle (especially diagonal): boards span too far between supports, edges flex and clips work loose. Add joists/blocking to meet the table. Go to the gap branch.
  • Spacing within table: go to the gap branch.

Gap branch:

  • End/side gaps outside the table for install temperature: buckling (too tight) or wide visible gaps (too loose). Reset boards to the correct gap for the current temperature. Go to the seating branch.
  • Gaps correct: go to the seating branch.

Seating branch:

  • Clips skipped at some joists or over-driven so the board cannot float: re-fasten one clip per joist at the maker's torque so boards can expand. If still loose, confirm the fastener bites solid joist, not a soft sister.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Mismatch: lay the suspect clip and the matched clip side by side against the board groove. If only the matched clip indexes fully into the groove geometry and the foreign clip rattles or stands proud, mismatch is confirmed.
  • Spacing: clamp temporary blocking under a flexing edge. If lift/squeak stops at that point, spacing was too wide for that board, especially on a diagonal run.
  • Gap/temperature: measure board surface temperature with an IR thermometer and compare the existing gap to the maker's temperature table. A gap below the table value at a high board temperature confirms buckling risk; a wide gap measured cold may be correct, so always reference the install-temperature column.
  • Seating: back out and re-seat one clip to the spec torque. If a board that was buckled relaxes once the over-driven clip is loosened to let it float, over-driving was the cause.

Remediation

  • Replace any foreign clips with the brand-matched clip (Trex Hideaway, TimberTech/AZEK CONCEALoc, Fiberon hidden system) and re-fasten per that guide.
  • Bring joist spacing to the maker's maximum on-center for the install angle; tighten for diagonal runs and add blocking at butt joints and the perimeter.
  • Reset end and side gaps to the brand's install-temperature table.
  • One clip per joist, fully seated, fastened to spec so boards can float; start and butt-joint clips used where the guide calls for them.
  • Document the corrected install against the manufacturer guide to preserve the fade/stain/structural warranty.
