Blocking and Bridging in Deck Joist Systems

Why this matters

Joists that pass span and depth checks on paper still roll over, twist, or telegraph movement to the decking unless the bay is laterally stabilized. Blocking and bridging are the cheapest framing operation on the deck and the first thing a structural engineer adds when a deck reads as bouncy on the punch list. The IRC sets minimums; quality work goes past them.

Blocking vs bridging defined

Blocking is solid lumber the same depth as the joist, cut to fit tight between joists, fastened at both ends. Bridging is cross-bracing, traditionally 1x3 or 1x4 wood diagonals, or proprietary metal cross-pieces. Blocking is the dominant method on modern decks because it doubles as a nailing surface for picture-frame borders and trim and because it is faster to install with engineered lumber.

What the code requires

IRC R507.6.1 requires blocking at the ends of deck joists where they bear on a beam or ledger, unless joist hangers or rim joists provide equivalent lateral restraint. Mid-span blocking is required when joists exceed a depth-to-thickness ratio of 6:1 under IRC R502.7.1, which lines up with:

  • 2x10 joists at 1.5 inches nominal width = 6.3:1, blocking required
  • 2x12 joists at 1.5 inches nominal width = 7.5:1, blocking required
  • 2x8 joists = 4.8:1, blocking not code-required but recommended on spans over 10 feet

Spacing of intermediate blocking lines is not prescribed numerically by the IRC for decks; common trade practice is one row at mid-span for spans up to 12 feet and two rows at the third points for spans 12 to 16 feet.

Picture-frame and direction-change blocking

Any decking joint that does not land on a joist needs a block under it. A picture-frame border running parallel to the joists requires a sister joist or doubled outboard joist. A border running perpendicular requires a row of blocks behind the perimeter joist face. For an inlay or pattern change in the field, the rule is one continuous block run for every break line in the decking pattern, full depth, fastened with the same hardware as the joists.

Fastening blocks

Two acceptable methods:

  • Toe-screw through the block face into the joist with two structural screws per end (typical Simpson SDWS22 or FastenMaster TimberLOK No. 9 by 3 inches). Predrilling is rare with these screws but required at end-grain locations on dense species.
  • Face-screw through the joist into the block end. Faster on a long bay but requires offset block placement (alternating sides of a center line) to allow drive access.

Toenailing with 16d common nails is permitted by code but is no longer common practice; the screw connection resists withdrawal and back-out from seasonal movement.

Engineered I-joists and parallel-strand lumber

If the deck uses LVL or PSL beams with I-joists as the joist system, follow the manufacturer's web-stiffener and squash-block schedule. I-joist webs are not allowed to be face-nailed; blocking panels are proprietary OSB or LVL squash blocks. Most jurisdictions do not allow I-joists in exterior exposed framing without a specific listing because moisture cycling delaminates the web, but where used, follow the engineering.

Hot-dip galvanized vs stainless connectors

Blocks themselves do not need connectors most of the time, but any hanger or angle clip used at a block-to-joist connection must match the rest of the deck's metal. Mixing G185 hot-dip galvanized with bright zinc-plated screws starts galvanic corrosion. Stainless screws into hot-dip hangers are acceptable; bright zinc is not, on ACQ or CA-treated lumber.

Inspection checkpoints

Before sheathing or decking goes down:

  • Every joist has lateral restraint at both ends (rim joist, hanger, or solid block)
  • Mid-span blocking is present and tight (no daylight at the joist face)
  • All blocks share the same depth as the joists, even where joist crown was relieved
  • Connector hardware on blocks matches the rest of the deck's coating
  • Picture-frame perimeter has continuous nailing backed by sister or block runs
