New Composite Decking Shows Brown or Orange Staining in Spots: Iron Staining Single-Observable Diagnosis

Why this matters

Orange or rust-brown staining on new composite decking is almost always iron-related, but the iron source determines the correct cleaning approach and the correct prevention step. Treating a fastener-corrosion stain as a tannin bleed, or vice versa, wastes time and may delay the customer's understanding of the actual commissioning error. Because composite decking carries a manufacturer warranty that is voided by improper fasteners, identifying the cause accurately also determines whether the board manufacturer is on the hook for discoloration or whether the fault is a specification error in the installation.

Step 1 - Read the stain pattern before touching anything

The spatial pattern of the staining is the single most useful piece of information. Photograph the deck from two angles before approaching the stained boards.

Pattern A - Stains are aligned in a grid or follow the fastener spacing:

  • Oval or teardrop stains centered directly over a fastener location suggest fastener corrosion.
  • A faint rust halo around a screw head or a plug confirms the mechanism.
  • Most likely cause: wrong fastener specification (standard steel screws instead of stainless or composite-rated coated screws; or correct spec fastener with a damaged coating from over-driving).

Pattern B - Stains are irregular in shape and concentrated near one end of the deck, along a drainage path, or beneath an overhead cedar or redwood structure:

  • Stains that flow or streak in the direction of surface drainage, or that appear only on boards downhill from a cedar or redwood planter, trellis, or overhead pergola, suggest iron-tannin reaction.
  • Tannin from certain wood species dissolves in water and, when it contacts iron particles in composite decking or ironcontaining minerals in the board surface, produces a dark reddish-brown compound.
  • Pattern is directional and non-uniform; does not align with fasteners.

Pattern C - Stains appeared shortly after construction cleanup or after the deck was rinsed with water during or after installation:

  • Stains that appeared within days of completion and are scattered without a clear pattern suggest iron-rich water was used during washdown.
  • Common on sites with well water that has elevated iron content.
  • Check with the customer or crew: was the deck washed down with a hose connected to a well or a faucet with known iron content?

Step 2 - Confirm the cause with a close inspection

After reading the pattern, get close to one representative stain.

For Pattern A (fastener corrosion):

  • Use a flashlight and look at the fastener head directly. Visible rust around the head or at the plug confirms the diagnosis.
  • If hidden fasteners were used, check the board ends and any accessible clip location for rust weep.
  • Pull one screw from a stained location if accessible; examine the shank and coating condition.

For Pattern B (tannin bleed):

  • Confirm the presence of a cedar or redwood element upslope or overhead. Even a cedar planter box or a redwood privacy screen 10 feet away can be the source.
  • The stain color is typically darker (brown-black) than a fastener rust stain (bright orange-rust) and may fade toward the edges.

For Pattern C (water source):

  • Confirm the iron content of the water source if possible. A simple field iron test strip (available at hardware stores) run on the site water gives a quick indication.
  • Pattern is the primary indicator; water source confirmation is secondary.

Step 3 - Select the cleaning approach

Iron staining on composite decking responds well to oxalic acid-based cleaners. The application steps differ slightly by stain type.

All iron stain types - general procedure:

  1. Sweep the deck free of debris.
  2. Wet the stained boards with clean water before applying the cleaner (prevents the cleaning solution from absorbing too quickly into the board surface).
  3. Apply an oxalic acid-based deck brightener or iron stain remover per the product manufacturer's directions. Dwell time is typically 5 to 15 minutes.
  4. Scrub with a soft-bristle brush. Do not use a wire brush or abrasive pad on composite - it will scratch the cap layer.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. If the site water source is iron-rich, use filtered or municipal water for the final rinse.
  6. Allow to dry and assess. A single application resolves most iron stains; moderate corrosion staining may require a second treatment.

Additional step for Pattern A (fastener corrosion):

  • After cleaning, replace all non-compliant fasteners with the correct stainless or composite-rated coated fasteners specified by the decking manufacturer.
  • Check whether over-driving damaged coating on otherwise correct fasteners. If so, replace the affected fasteners and adjust driver depth stop.
  • Failing to replace the fasteners means the staining will recur within one season.

Additional step for Pattern B (tannin bleed):

  • After cleaning, isolate the cedar or redwood source from direct rain contact with the deck surface if possible (reposition a planter, add a drip lip to an overhead element).
  • If the source cannot be moved (structural pergola, adjacent structure), advise the customer that periodic treatment with an oxalic acid brightener is part of the ongoing maintenance for this configuration.

Confirm the composite decking manufacturer's care and cleaning instructions before applying any chemical to the deck surface. Some cap-layer composite products have restrictions on chemical cleaners; using a product not on the approved list may void the surface warranty. Photograph the staining and document the cleaning product and method used regardless of outcome. If the staining is severe and cannot be removed, contact the manufacturer before proceeding to a board replacement claim, as iron staining from an external source is typically not covered under the product warranty.

Step 4 - Address the commissioning error and prevent recurrence

For Pattern A, the root cause is a fastener specification error. Document the following for the job record:

  • Fastener type and size specified in the decking manufacturer's installation guide.
  • Fastener type actually installed (from packaging or pulled sample).
  • Whether the deviation was a substitution during installation or a material order error.
  • Remediation performed (fastener replacement) and cleaning product used.

For Pattern B and C, no commissioning error in the decking installation itself has occurred, but the site conditions were not fully accounted for at scope. Document the source and the advisory provided to the customer for ongoing maintenance expectations.
