Deck Boards Develop Uneven Gaps Over the First Winter: Single-Observable Diagnosis
Why this matters
Deck boards that open unevenly over the first winter create two problems: an inconsistent visual appearance that customers notice immediately, and potential structural questions about whether the gapping represents a fastening failure rather than normal seasonal movement. The boards did not all move equally because they were not all in equal condition at installation - the diagnostic task is to identify which variable differed across the run and whether the final gap state is cosmetic or requires re-fastening.
Establish what "uneven" means precisely
Before diagnosing cause, measure and map the variation.
Steps:
- Walk the full deck run and measure the gap between each pair of adjacent boards using a feeler gauge or calibrated spacer.
- Record the gap at the centerspan of each space (mid-joist, not at a fastener location where the board is pinched).
- Note which boards show wide gaps and whether they are concentrated in a zone or scattered randomly across the run.
- Measure the boards themselves - a board that has shrunk in width will show a wider gap than a neighbor, regardless of original spacing.
Interpretation of the map:
- Random scatter of wide-gap boards throughout the run: moisture content variation at install.
- Wide gaps concentrated near one end or one zone: possible drainage or exposure difference, or a batch of boards from a different storage location.
- Every other board has a wide gap with tight neighbors: inconsistent original spacing at install.
- Wide gaps at all fastener mid-span locations but not at the fasteners: under-driven or missing fasteners.
Cause 1 - Boards installed at unequal moisture content
Wood decking shrinks as it loses moisture from its installation moisture content down toward equilibrium with the outdoor environment. A board installed at 19% moisture content will shrink more than a board installed at 12% moisture content, even though both boards are the same species and dimension.
Boards from a partially covered outdoor stack, boards from the center of a delivery bundle, and boards that were installed in the first few days of a job versus the last few days can all differ in moisture content by several percentage points.
Diagnosis:
- Identify the boards with the widest gaps.
- Check whether those boards also show other drying indicators: surface checking (small surface cracks along the grain), slight cupping, or end-grain shrinkage gaps at butt joints.
- If the wide-gap boards also show more surface checking than tight-gap neighbors, differential moisture content at install is the primary cause.
Resolution: gaps from moisture-driven shrinkage are final - the board will not expand back to its original width in service. Assess whether the resulting gaps are within acceptable range for the application. For structural decks, gaps up to about 6 mm are generally acceptable for drainage and debris clearance. Gaps larger than 8-10 mm across a narrow board create a tripping and heel-catch hazard and may require board replacement or infill.
Cause 2 - Inconsistent original spacing at install
If the original spacing was not uniform - either because the installer varied the spacer thickness or did not use spacers consistently - boards that started tight will appear to have moved more when they reach equilibrium spacing, while boards that started at or above equilibrium spacing barely appear to change.
Diagnosis:
- Measure the gap at a fastener location (where the board is pinched) versus mid-span.
- On a board with inconsistent spacing, the gap at the fastener may be visibly different from the gap at mid-span.
- Compare gap size at the first joist from each end versus the centerspan joist - if the installer closed the spacer up progressively across the run, gaps will be systematically narrower at one end.
Resolution: if the board is otherwise sound and secured, inconsistent original spacing is cosmetic. If some gaps are at zero (boards touching) while neighbors are at 8 mm, boards touching under wet conditions can trap moisture and accelerate decay at the board edge. Boards that are touching should be trimmed or relieved on the edge to create a minimum 3-4 mm gap.
Cause 3 - Fastener engagement varies across the run
A board that is not held down firmly to the joist can pull away as it shrinks, creating a gap that is wider than the board's actual width change alone would produce. Under-driven screws, stripped screw holes, or missing fasteners at a joist location allow the board to bow slightly upward and the apparent gap between boards at mid-span to increase.
Diagnosis:
- Walk the deck and look across the surface at a low angle in raking light. Boards with insufficient fastening will show a slight bow or crown between joists, while well-fastened boards lie flat.
- Identify the boards with wide mid-span gaps and check whether those boards also crown between joists.
- At the widest-gap boards, probe the fastener locations by pressing down firmly on the board directly over each joist. A properly fastened board has no flex toward the joist. A board with a stripped or missing fastener will flex down under moderate hand pressure and spring back when released.
Resolution: drive new fasteners into the same joist locations at a fresh location in the board face, offset from the original fastener by 25-30 mm. Where the original fastener hole is stripped, use a fastener of larger diameter or a longer fastener that reaches into the joist at a fresh angle. Re-check mid-span bow after re-fastening.
Do not confuse fastener pull-through on the board face with a stripped joist hole. If the fastener head has pulled through the board surface, the board face has failed and the board should be replaced - additional fasteners will not restore the board to flush.
Assess cosmetic vs. structural significance
After identifying the cause, determine whether action is required.
Cosmetic only, no action required: gaps are uneven in appearance but all are within 3-8 mm, boards are flat and secure, no crowning between joists, no boards touching under wet conditions.
Action required - edge relief: two or more boards are touching or have gaps below 2 mm. These boards will trap debris, hold moisture, and accelerate edge decay.
Action required - re-fastening: any board shows mid-span crowning under raking-light inspection and flexes under hand pressure at joist locations.
Action required - board replacement: gaps exceed 10 mm across a standard board width, or boards show significant surface checking combined with crowning, indicating both moisture-content failure and fastening failure.
