Composite Deck Surface Scratched on Move-In Day: Damage Claim Decision Tree

Why this matters

Composite decking scratches have a liability timing problem: the damage is real and visible, but the moment it occurred is disputed. A customer who discovers scratches after movers dragged furniture across the deck will assume the contractor is responsible. A contractor who handed off a clean deck and has no documentation to prove it is in a difficult position. This article covers how to distinguish scratch types, how to reconstruct timing from the evidence, and how to protect handoff with documentation that makes these disputes resolvable rather than relationship-damaging.

Understand composite scratch mechanics

Composite decking has a co-extruded cap layer over a wood-plastic core. The cap layer provides color, UV resistance, and most of the scratch resistance. The core is soft and will show damage immediately if the cap is breached.

Surface cap scratches: Shallow, affect only the outer layer. Under normal lighting they may be nearly invisible. Under raking light (low-angle illumination across the surface) they appear as bright lines. These scratches do not expose the core material and have no structural significance.

Through-cap scratches: Deeper marks that breach the cap layer and expose the lighter-colored core beneath. Visible in normal lighting as a color-contrast line. Cannot be buffed out. These are the category customers typically photograph and submit as damage claims.

Installer-caused marks: Narrow parallel lines from a circular saw set too shallow that nicked the adjacent board, or isolated point marks from dropped hardware. Pattern is usually regular or isolated.

Furniture/mover-caused marks: Irregular, curving, often multiple parallel lines from a dragged object. May cross multiple boards at an angle inconsistent with the board run direction.

Assess scratch direction relative to board orientation

Scratch direction is one of the strongest indicators of causation.

Steps:

  1. Note the direction the deck boards run.
  2. Examine whether the scratches run parallel to, across, or diagonally to the board direction.
  3. Installer work - cutting, fastening, walking with tools - generally tracks along or directly across the board run in straight lines.
  4. Moving furniture produces curved, swept marks that often cross multiple boards at oblique angles corresponding to the path furniture was dragged.

A concentrated cluster of diagonal scratches across the door threshold area, where movers would have pivoted heavy items, is characteristic of move-in day damage.

Evaluate lighting conditions at the time of the claim

Surface cap scratches that are invisible in ambient overhead light are clearly visible under raking light. Many customer photographs of "terrible scratching" show marks that are shallow cap scuffs photographed with a phone held at ankle height in afternoon sun - an angle that maximizes the appearance of any surface irregularity.

When assessing a claim photograph:

  1. Note the light source direction and angle in the photograph.
  2. Ask whether the customer can provide a photograph taken in normal standing-eye-height lighting.
  3. Compare the visual severity in both photos.

Cap-only scuffs that disappear or become very minor under normal-angle lighting are cosmetic, and some composite materials carry published guidance that this level of surface marking is within acceptable tolerances.

This does not resolve a through-cap scratch with core exposure, which is genuine damage regardless of lighting angle.

Check the pre-handoff documentation

The liability question turns almost entirely on documentation.

With pre-handoff photo documentation:

  1. Pull the handoff photos and compare scratch location, direction, and depth to what the customer is claiming.
  2. If the handoff photos show the same area without scratches and the customer's photos show scratches, the damage occurred after handoff.
  3. If the handoff photos show the same marks the customer is now claiming, the damage occurred before or during installation.

Without pre-handoff photo documentation: The claim is unresolvable by evidence and becomes a relationship and judgment call. Neither party can prove their position. This is the scenario that pre-handoff documentation prevents.

A handoff sign-off from the customer is not a substitute for photographic documentation. A customer who signs a completion form and then discovers scratches the next day can reasonably claim they did not inspect every board surface before signing. Pre-handoff photos with timestamps are the only evidence that survives a disputed claim.

Pre-handoff documentation protocol

This is a preventive step, not a diagnostic one, but it belongs here because it is the only way future claims are resolvable.

Standard pre-handoff photo protocol for composite decks:

  1. Before the customer walkthrough, photograph the full deck surface under raking light (low-angle illumination) to capture any pre-existing surface irregularity.
  2. Photograph the threshold area and any zone adjacent to doors where furniture will be moved.
  3. Timestamp all photos or use a photo app that embeds GPS and time in the EXIF data.
  4. Keep originals in the job record and do not compress or re-export them.

If the customer raises a scratch claim after handoff, these photos establish the surface condition at handoff. If the claimed scratches are not present in the raking-light handoff photos, the damage occurred after the contractor left.

Composite manufacturer warranty relevance

Composite decking materials from most manufacturers carry scratch resistance claims in marketing materials, but the warranty language typically covers manufacturing defects rather than surface damage from post-installation use. Scratch damage from furniture, tools, or abrasion is explicitly excluded in most published warranty documents.

When a customer argues that the material should not have scratched, the relevant question is: does the scratch fall within the manufacturer's published acceptable-appearance tolerances, and was the cause consistent with normal residential use or with an abrasive event?

A contractor is not liable for through-cap damage caused by a mover dragging an iron-base appliance across the deck surface. The contractor is liable for through-cap damage caused by a saw guide dragged across a board during installation.
