Boards Cup Again Only On South Side After Replace Decision Tree

Why this matters

You replaced cupped boards on a south-facing deck, and within a season the new boards cup again while the shaded sections stay flat. A repeat callback on the same defect erodes margin and confidence. Cupping is differential moisture across the board thickness: the wetter face swells, the drier face stays put, and the board curls toward the dry side. South exposure drives the most aggressive wet/dry cycling because solar gain bakes the top face while the underside stays damp from ground or shade moisture. If you replace boards without correcting the moisture gradient or fastening, the new stock cups exactly like the old. This tree isolates whether the cause is board orientation, moisture from below, fastener inadequacy, or material choice so the second repair holds.

Symptom presentation

Cupping presents as a concave or convex curl across the board width, measured corner-to-center. Confirm the pattern:

  • Concave (dish) holds water in the middle: the top face is wetter or the underside drier.
  • Convex (crown) sheds water but rocks underfoot: the top face dried faster than the bottom.
  • South or southwest boards cup; north and shaded boards stay within tolerance.
  • Cupping appears within the first dry-down season, often by late spring on a winter install.

Lay a straightedge across the board width. Under 1/16 inch of gap over a 5-1/2 inch board is cosmetic; 1/8 inch or more telegraphs as a trip and drainage problem and is a legitimate defect.

Quick checks

  1. Moisture-meter the underside of three cupping boards and three flat shaded boards. A spread over 5 percentage points between top and bottom on the same board confirms a live gradient.
  2. Check growth-ring orientation on the board ends. Bark-side-up (rings smiling) resists cupping; pith-side-up (rings frowning) cups toward the top reliably. Many cupped replacements were simply installed rings-up.
  3. Verify ground clearance and underside ventilation. Under 12 inches to grade or a sealed skirt traps humidity against the underside.
  4. Confirm fastener type and count. Two fasteners per joist at each board pin the edges; one centered fastener lets the edges curl freely.

Isolation tree

Start at the moisture spread.

  • Spread over 5 points AND undated south boards cup, shaded boards flat: the gradient is the driver. Go to the ventilation and clearance branch.
  • Spread under 5 points but boards still cup: moisture has equalized and the curl is locked in. Cause is ring orientation or kiln set. Go to the orientation branch.

Ventilation and clearance branch:

  • Ground clearance under 12 inches OR solid skirt with no airflow: trapped underside humidity is the root. The top dries in sun, the bottom never does. Remediation is ventilation, not boards.
  • Clearance adequate, open skirt, still cupping: move to fastener branch.

Orientation branch:

  • Boards installed pith-side-up (rings frown): orientation drove the cup. The replacement repeated the original mistake. Reinstall bark-side-up or switch to a stable material.
  • Boards bark-side-up but still cupping: the lumber was wet when installed and dried fast on the sun side. Material moisture content at install was too high. Go to material branch.

Fastener branch:

  • One fastener per joist: edges are unrestrained. Add a second fastener 3/4 to 1 inch from each edge per board per joist and recheck after a dry cycle.
  • Two fasteners, edges still lifting: fasteners are too short or pulling. Verify 2 to 2-1/2 inch screws with full thread engagement into the joist.

Material branch:

  • Wet PT (over 19 percent MC at install): the board shrank and cupped as it dried. Specify KDAT (kiln-dried after treatment) for south exposures, or move to composite/PVC which does not cup.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Gradient confirmed: tape a plastic sheet to the underside of one suspect board for 48 hours, then re-meter. A jump in underside MC confirms moisture is wicking from below.
  • Orientation confirmed: photograph the board-end rings. Frowning rings plus top-side dishing is a textbook orientation cup.
  • Fastener confirmed: back out one screw on a cupping board. If the edge springs flat, the board wants to lie flat and was only held cupped by inadequate edge restraint nearby.

Remediation

  • Moisture from below: open the skirt to at least 50 percent free area, restore 12 inch minimum grade clearance, and add a ground-cover vapor retarder over bare soil. Re-meter in 30 days before replacing any boards.
  • Orientation: reinstall bark-side-up. On PT, this alone resolves most south-side recurrence.
  • Wet lumber: re-deck the south runs in KDAT PT or in capped composite/PVC per ASTM D7032. These do not develop a moisture gradient.
  • Fastening: two fasteners per joist, 2 to 2-1/2 inch coated or stainless deck screws, edges pinned. Seal field-cut ends with a copper-naphthenate end coat per AWPA recommendations.

Do not seal the underside of solid-sawn PT with a film-forming finish to stop cupping. A sealed underside plus an unsealed top creates a worse one-sided gradient and accelerates cupping. Treat the assembly moisture and orientation, not the board faces.
