Vinyl Window Sash Balance Replacement
Why this matters
A failed sash balance is the most common service call on a vinyl single-hung or double-hung 10 to 20 years in. Customer description: "The window will not stay up; it slides down on its own" or "the window is hard to lift" or "the sash dropped suddenly." The fix is parts (the balance itself) plus 20 to 40 minutes of labor per window. The diagnostic, the parts identification, and the four standard balance types all matter; getting the wrong balance back to the truck means two trips per window. This HowTo walks through identification, sourcing, and the install procedure for the four common balance designs.
Symptoms and what they mean

Confirm with the sash removed (see below): a balance still under tension and operating correctly will retract or extend smoothly when the sash is unhooked.
The four common balance types
1. Block-and-tackle (most common in vinyl single-hung and double-hung from the 1990s onward)
A spring-loaded pulley assembly in a vertical channel beside the sash. The sash hangs from a hook or shoe that engages the balance. Identified by the visible pulley and cord through a slot in the channel.
2. Constant-force coil balance (Spiraltube / sausage-style)
A horizontal coiled-steel spring in a metal tube mounted at the head, with a cord or strap extending down the sash track. Common in older vinyl units and in some current heavy-sash designs.
3. Channel balance (Caldwell, Series 600 and similar)
A spring-loaded shoe inside a metal channel that bolts to the jamb pocket. The sash pivot pin engages the shoe. Common in 1980s and 1990s wood and vinyl units; still used in some current models.
4. Spiral (torsion) balance
A spiral-rod inside a tube; the rod rotates as the sash moves, providing torsional spring force. Less common in modern vinyl but appears in repair stock.
Block-and-tackle is by far the most common in a current repair backlog.
Identification at the customer's window
- Remove a sash (most modern vinyl units release with two finger tabs at the top of the sash for tilt-in).
- Photograph the visible balance: look in the side channels. The presence and shape of a visible spring, pulley, or shoe identifies the type.
- Photograph the manufacturer's label. Most vinyl manufacturers stamp a serial number and a model code on a small label inside the sash channel or on the upper-jamb head. The label tells you the OEM balance part number.
- Measure: balance length (channel inside dimension), sash weight (where possible; a luggage scale rigged to the lift point gives a number), and any rating stamp on the failed balance itself. Many balances are stamped with a number such as "28 4B" - the first number is the channel length in inches, the second is the load rating.
Sourcing
OEM balances from the original window manufacturer are the first-choice source if the manufacturer is still in business and still supports the product line. Many vinyl manufacturers offer a parts program through their dealer network.
If the OEM is out of business or no longer supports the line (common for vinyl units from the 1990s with brand names that changed hands), aftermarket suppliers (Sash Window Hardware, Caldwell, Truth, plus several online specialty distributors) carry direct-fit balances for the major channel and shoe profiles. The aftermarket part number is keyed to the channel profile and length plus the load rating.
Carry on the truck: a selection of the most-common block-and-tackle balances in lengths 20 to 36 inches and load ratings from 8 to 20 pounds per balance. Approximately 80 percent of service calls match a stock part.
Replacement procedure - block-and-tackle balance
- Remove the sash - tilt the sash inward by pressing the tilt-in latches at the upper corners; rotate to horizontal and lift one pivot out of its shoe, then the other.
- Release the balance from the channel - most block-and-tackle balances have a small clip or tab at the top of the channel that secures the balance. Disengage it; the balance can then be pulled down and out.
- Compare old to new - confirm channel length, load rating, and hook style match.
- Install the new balance - slide into the channel, secure at the top with the clip or tab. The bottom of the balance carries a hook or shoe that the sash pivot engages.
- Pre-load the balance - some block-and-tackle balances require a pre-load step (pulling the cord down and engaging into a notch) before the sash is reinstalled. The OEM or supplier instruction sheet specifies; do not skip.
- Reinstall the sash - engage one pivot, then the other; rotate the sash to vertical; close. Operate full travel three times to verify smooth operation.
- Repeat on the second balance - always replace both balances on a sash even if only one failed. A new balance paired with an old failing balance results in an uneven sash within months.
Replacement procedure - channel balance
- Remove the sash.
- Unscrew the channel from the jamb pocket (usually two or three Phillips screws).
- Compare the old channel-shoe assembly to the replacement; confirm shoe profile matches the sash pivot.
- Install the new channel; tighten screws snug, not over-torqued (the channel can deform).
- Reinstall the sash, engaging the pivot into the new shoe.
Replacement procedure - constant-force coil balance
- Remove the sash.
- The coil tube is mounted at the head; the cord extends down through a routing point to the sash. Some designs have the cord hook into the sash side; others into a strap.
- Replacement requires care: the coil is under tension at all times. Follow the supplier's preload-and-secure procedure exactly; releasing tension unintentionally can cause an injury.
- Engage the new cord into the sash hook; reinstall the sash.
Replacement procedure - spiral (torsion) balance
- Remove the sash.
- Engage a balance-tool key into the bottom of the spiral rod and rotate to release tension (this is the dangerous step if done without the tool; the rod will spin under load).
- Remove and replace the rod or the entire tube assembly per the design.
- Re-tension to the manufacturer's specified turn count.
- Reinstall the sash.
