FMA vs AAMA InstallationMasters - Installer Certification Comparison
Why this matters
A new-construction or retrofit window installation has two parallel standards documents that prescribe how the flashing, sealing, and integration to the weather-resistive barrier (WRB) get done: ASTM E2112 (Standard Practice for Installation of Exterior Windows, Doors, and Skylights) and the FMA/AAMA flashing installation method standards (FMA 100, 200, 300 family covering different rough-opening conditions). The two installer-training programs that certify crews to these standards are InstallationMasters (AAMA, now FGIA) and the FMA installer programs. They are not identical, they cover different scopes, and selecting the right credential for the work mix the operator targets is a business decision, not a checkbox.
This Reference frames the comparison so an owner can choose which credential to fund for crews, and so a sales rep can speak credibly to architects and general contractors about which method the install will follow.
The two standards documents at the spec-writer's level
ASTM E2112 is the umbrella practice. It defines methods A, A1, A2, B, B1, and others, each corresponding to a specific weather-barrier-integration sequence (flange-back, flange-out, jamb-flashed, head-flashed) and a specific rough-opening preparation (back-dam, sill pan, sloped sill). E2112 is the document most architects cite in the specification book ("install per ASTM E2112"); it tells the installer what the assembly must look like at completion but is not prescriptive at the trowel-and-tape level.
FMA/AAMA flashing standards (FMA 100, 200, 300, and FMA 400 for masonry) are the prescriptive installation method standards. Each covers a specific opening type:
- FMA 100 - non-finned (block frame) windows in wood frame construction
- FMA 200 - flanged windows in wood frame with WRB
- FMA 300 - flanged windows in stucco
- FMA 400 - windows in masonry wall
The FMA standards walk through the sequence step by step with specific tape, sealant, and sequencing requirements. Where E2112 says "lap the WRB over the head flange," FMA 200 says "install 9-inch wide flashing tape extending 2 inches beyond the rough opening at the head, lapped under the existing WRB or covered by new WRB installed shingle-style."
In practice, an installer working to ASTM E2112 is using one of the FMA standards as the prescriptive how-to behind the umbrella reference.

- Recognized by most national window manufacturers as a qualifying credential for warranty-installation requirements
What you get
A certified installer credential that satisfies most window-manufacturer extended-warranty programs that require certified installation, and a credential that an architect specifying "installer must be ASTM E2112 trained" recognizes.
Renewal
Typically every three years through continuing education or re-certification.

- Strong in the Southeast and hurricane-zone markets where FMA standards intersect with high-velocity-hurricane-zone (HVHZ) Miami-Dade product approvals
- Coverage by individual standard: an FMA 100 credential does not cover FMA 200 work
What you get
A credential tied to the specific method the standard covers. For an operator in a hurricane market doing predominantly flanged windows in stucco, the FMA 300 credential demonstrates direct expertise in the prescriptive method the inspector and the engineer-of-record care about.
How to choose
New-construction-heavy operations in the Southeast or Gulf coast
FMA 300 (stucco) plus FMA 400 (masonry) align with the predominant wall systems and inspector expectations. InstallationMasters as a foundational credential is still valuable.
Retrofit-heavy operations in the Northeast or Midwest
InstallationMasters covers the broad envelope including E2112 method B (insert replacement into existing frame) which is the bread-and-butter of retrofit work. FMA 100 and 200 add value where new-construction crossover happens.
Multi-region or franchised operations
Both. The two credentials are not redundant; they cover different scopes.
Single-trade operator with one crew
InstallationMasters first as the broader credential, then layer FMA as the work mix demands it.
What the spec book actually says
Review three or four typical specification books for the regional market. The architect's written specification will reference one of:
- ASTM E2112 (umbrella)
- A specific FMA standard (FMA 100/200/300/400)
- AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440 (NAFS - the product performance standard, which is separate from installation; product cert is the manufacturer's job, installation cert is the installer's)
- Manufacturer-specific installation instructions
The credential the installer holds should map to what the spec book asks for. A bid that promises "installation per ASTM E2112 by certified InstallationMasters technician" reads stronger than "installation per manufacturer's instructions."
Manufacturer extended warranty as the business case
Most major US window manufacturers offer extended-warranty programs (often 10-year transferable, vs the standard limited warranty) that require certified installation. The certification requirement is usually either InstallationMasters or the manufacturer's own program (which often mirrors FMA standards). A dealer or installer relationship with the manufacturer commonly hinges on holding the certification; without it, the dealer cannot offer the extended warranty as part of the sale, which is a competitive disadvantage on premium quotes.
Crew-training-budget logic
Training one lead per crew to InstallationMasters and pairing with FMA-specific training for hurricane or stucco markets covers most operator scenarios. Single-installer shops should hold InstallationMasters at minimum because it is the credential the spec book most often references.
