Andersen vs Marvin vs Pella Clad Window Seal Failure Fault Tree

Why this matters

Aluminum-clad and fiberglass/composite-clad wood windows from Andersen, Marvin, and Pella are premium units, and when one fogs, the homeowner expects a clean warranty answer. The diagnosis is the same physics across all three (a fogged IGU is a perimeter-seal failure that saturated the desiccant), but the warranty path, failure pattern, and repairable unit differ by brand and line. The other trap is mislabeling: clad-wood units fail a way the all-vinyl world does not, namely cladding-joint water intrusion that rots the wood behind the cladding and accelerates edge-seal failure. This fault tree confirms a true IGU seal failure, separates it from cladding-driven water damage, and routes the claim by brand.

Symptom presentation

The homeowner reports fog, haze, mineral streaking, or a visible ring at the glass edge that will not wipe from inside or out, typically worst on the coldest and most weather-exposed elevations, on an Andersen, Marvin, or Pella clad unit that may still be within warranty. On clad-wood units there may also be paint blistering or dark staining at the cladding-to-wood joints, or soft wood at the sill, signaling the second failure mode that lives alongside or causes the seal failure.

Quick checks

Confirm cavity fog and brand/line before filing anything.

Wipe surfaces 1 and 4. If the haze cleans off the interior or exterior glass face, it is surface condensation or film, not a seal failure (see the condensation diagnostics). If it will not wipe from either side, it is between the panes, which is by definition a seal failure.

Identify the brand, line, and date. Andersen (for example 400 Series clad-wood, A-Series, E-Series), Marvin (Elevate/Essential/Signature lines, formerly Integrity), and Pella (Architect/Reserve/Lifestyle/Impervia) each have line-specific IGU systems and warranty terms. Read the spacer/etch mark and any unit label for the manufacture date; the IGU seal warranty runs from a defined date and varies by line.

Inspect the cladding joints and the wood. On clad-wood, look for water staining or rot at the cladding corners, the sill, and the brickmould/nailing-fin joints. Cladding that traps water against the wood is a known accelerant of edge-seal failure and a different remediation than a simple IGU swap.

Confirmed between-panes fog, cladding and wood sound. Classic IGU seal failure. Sub-branch by what is replaceable on that line: many clad-wood units (common on Andersen 400/A-Series, Marvin, and Pella architectural lines) allow glass-only or sash-only IGU replacement, so the fix is a replacement sealed unit, not a whole window. Confirm the line's serviceable part and order against the unit's glass warranty.

Between-panes fog plus staining/rot at cladding joints. Two co-existing failures. Water is getting behind the cladding (failed cladding-joint seal, a flashing/drainage problem at the head or sill, or a factory joint that opened), wetting the wood and the IGU edge, which accelerates the seal failure. Replacing only the glass leaves the water source; you must fix the cladding-joint/flashing intrusion and replace any rotted wood, then address the IGU.

Fog appears across many units of the same line and similar date. Possible IGU batch/spacer issue. Document the pattern, the date codes, and photos; brands handle systemic IGU failures through the line's seal warranty and sometimes a batch program. A cluster strengthens the warranty claim.

Single early failure, all else sound, recent install. Suspect handling/install damage to the IGU edge (a pinched or chipped edge from glazing, or a unit set in a glazing pocket that holds water with blocked weeps). Inspect the glazing pocket and weeps; correct drainage when reglazing so the replacement does not repeat.

Confirming diagnosis

Prove the seal failure and the cause.

Cavity fog: persists after cleaning both exposed faces, intensifies as the glass gets colder, and shows an edge ring/mineral residue over time. That is conclusive for desiccant saturation/seal failure.

Cladding-water failure: probe the wood at the cladding joints and sill; soft or stained wood plus a reproducible water path (controlled low-pressure water test per ASTM E2112/E1105 at the cladding joints and head) confirms intrusion as a contributing or primary cause.

Serviceable unit: confirm with the brand's parts resource whether the line supports glass-only/sash-only replacement so you order the correct serviceable component rather than a whole window.

Remediation

IGU seal failure, structure sound: file under the line's glass/seal warranty (Andersen, Marvin, and Pella each warrant IGU seal failure for a defined term that varies by line; record install/manufacture date and fog photos). Replace with the OEM serviceable glass or sash for that line. The IGU is not field-repairable.

Cladding-water plus seal failure: fix the water source first. Re-seal or repair the cladding joint/flashing that admitted water, rebuild head/sill flashing and drainage as needed, replace rotted wood, then install the replacement glass/sash. Skipping the water fix guarantees the new IGU fails the same way.

Install/handling-induced: replace the damaged IGU, and correct the glazing pocket drainage (open weeps, correct setting blocks, ensure the pocket sheds water) so the new unit is not sitting in standing water.

After any reglaze, verify even glazing-bead/setting-block support, open weeps, and a drained pocket, then re-check for fog over a cold cycle.

Reglazing and cladding repair on upper-floor or large fixed units involves heavy glass and ladder/scaffold work. Large IGUs can weigh enough to cause serious injury if dropped or mishandled; use mechanical lifting aids, suction handlers rated for the load, and proper fall protection. Do not attempt a large-unit reglaze solo from a ladder.
