Pressure Tank Short Cycles After Bladder Replace Decision Tree
Why this matters
You replace a waterlogged bladder pressure tank (or the bladder in a rebuildable tank), put the well pump back online, and it short cycles - the pump kicks on and off rapidly every few seconds whenever water runs. Short cycling burns out pump motors, hammers the pressure switch, and tells you the tank's usable drawdown is near zero. Right after a tank or bladder replacement, the cause is almost always the air pre-charge set wrong relative to the pump's cut-in pressure, an air charge that did not get set at all, a new tank that is too small, or the pressure switch settings not matching the tank. This tree isolates which so you stop the cycling before it kills the pump - and confirm the tank is actually doing its job of storing drawdown.
Symptom presentation
- Pump cycles on and off rapidly (every few seconds) when a fixture runs; pressure gauge needle swings fast.
- Just replaced the pressure tank or bladder.
- May feel like surging pressure at fixtures; the pump runs far more often than before.
The cause set narrows because you just touched the tank. Short cycling immediately post-replacement is overwhelmingly a pre-charge or sizing mismatch, not a well or pump fault that happened to coincide.
Quick checks
- Read the cut-in / cut-out of the pressure switch (e.g., 30/50, 40/60 psi). You need these numbers to set the tank.
- With the system depressurized (pump off, a fixture open to bleed pressure to zero), measure the tank air pre-charge at the Schrader valve with a tire gauge. It should be about 2 psi below cut-in (so 28 psi for a 30/50 switch, 38 psi for 40/60).
- Confirm the bladder did not get installed/charged wrong (over- or under-charged, or charged with water in the tank).
- Estimate the tank size versus pump GPM - too small a tank short cycles even when correctly charged.

Is the air pre-charge set ~2 psi below cut-in, measured with the system at zero pressure?
- Not measured at zero pressure: you cannot read pre-charge accurately with water pressure on the tank. Bleed the system to zero, then read. Re-check before going further.
- Pre-charge wrong (high or low): set it to 2 psi below cut-in with the system at zero. Too high a pre-charge leaves almost no drawdown (tank empties immediately, pump short cycles); too low overworks the bladder and also cuts drawdown. This is the number-one post-replacement cause. Re-test cycling.
- Pre-charge correct and still short cycling: continue.
Did the tank get charged with water in it (false reading)?
- If the tank was pressurized as air-side while it still held water on the water side, the "pre-charge" is wrong. Drain the water side fully, set air to 2 psi below cut-in on an empty tank, then return to service.
- Confirmed empty when charged: continue.
Is the new tank large enough for the pump?
- A tank too small for the pump's GPM has too little drawdown between cut-in and cut-out, so the pump cycles even when perfectly charged. Compare the tank's rated drawdown at this pressure range to the pump output; a common rule targets at least one minute of pump run per cycle. Upsize the tank or add a second tank if drawdown is short.
- Tank adequately sized: continue.
Does the pressure switch differential match the tank?
- A narrow cut-in/cut-out differential (small spread) shortens each cycle. Confirm the switch differential is standard (e.g., 20 psi spread) and matched to the pre-charge. Adjust or replace a misadjusted/failing switch. A switch that chatters or has burned contacts also causes rapid cycling.
- Switch correct: continue.
Is the bladder intact (not the cause via waterlog)?
- If, after correct pre-charge and sizing, the tank waterlogs again quickly (air bleeds out through a failed/again-failed bladder, or air valve leaks), drawdown collapses and short cycling returns. Check for a ruptured new bladder (water at the air Schrader) or a leaking air valve. Replace if the new bladder failed or the air valve leaks.
Confirming the diagnosis
- Pre-charge confirmed when the tank measured wrong at zero pressure and resetting it to 2 psi below cut-in stops the short cycling and restores a normal on/off cadence.
- Sizing confirmed when pre-charge and switch are correct but drawdown is short for the pump GPM, and upsizing the tank gives adequate run time per cycle.
- Switch confirmed when an adjusted/replaced switch with proper differential ends the rapid cycling.
- Bladder/air leak confirmed when air escapes at the Schrader (water present) or the air valve leaks, and replacing it holds the charge.
Final proof: with a fixture running, time the pump cycle - a healthy system runs roughly a minute or more between starts rather than seconds, and the gauge swings smoothly between cut-in and cut-out.
Remediation
- Bleed the system to zero, set the tank air pre-charge to 2 psi below cut-in, and verify on an empty tank.
- Ensure the tank was charged empty of water; drain and recharge if it was charged with water present.
- Upsize the tank (or add a second) so drawdown gives at least about a minute of pump run per cycle.
- Match the pressure switch differential to the tank and replace a chattering or burned switch.
- Replace a failed new bladder or leaking air valve that lets the tank waterlog.
