Common Water Treatment Issues Diagnostic

Overview

Common problems customers report + the diagnostic path. Water treatment failures often mimic other issues; understanding the system isolates cause.

Issue 1: Softener producing hard water

Causes (in order of likelihood):

  1. Bypass valve in wrong position
  • Most common; quick check
  • Position bypass to softener route
  1. Salt depleted in brine tank
  • Visual check
  • Refill salt
  1. Salt bridge (crusted layer in brine tank)
  • Salt looks present but solid; brine can't dissolve
  • Break up; refill correctly
  1. Programming wrong (hardness setting)
  • Wrong GPG entered; regeneration insufficient
  • Re-test water; correct setting
  1. Resin fouled (iron, sediment)
  • Diagnose with mineral cleaner test
  • Clean resin OR replace
  1. Resin worn out (10+ years old)
  • Visual: discoloration, clumping
  • Replace

Issue 2: Discolored water

Sub-symptoms by color:

Red/brown:

  • Iron in water (most common)
  • Rust from old pipes
  • Failed iron filter

Fix: iron filter installation OR pipe replacement

Black:

  • Manganese
  • Black scale from carbon (rare)

Fix: greensand filter (handles both iron + manganese)

Yellow:

  • Tannins (decaying organic matter in groundwater)
  • Sometimes mistaken for iron

Fix: anion exchange or activated carbon

Cloudy/Milky:

  • Air entrapment (most common; clears on standing)
  • Methane in well water (rare; venting required)

Fix: usually self-resolving; check well venting

Pink:

  • Bacteria (serratia marcescens; not water-borne but biofilm)
  • Affects fixtures + shower walls

Fix: cleaning + chlorination

Issue 3: Foul taste/smell

Sulfur (rotten egg):

  • Hydrogen sulfide from anaerobic bacteria in well or water heater
  • Common in well water + sometimes in city water with hot water heater sitting unused

Fix: chlorination + carbon filtration; for water heater only, flush + sanitize tank

Metallic:

  • Iron, copper, or galvanized pipe deterioration
  • Often low pH

Fix: pH correction + filtration

Chlorine:

  • Municipal disinfection
  • Strongest right after meter

Fix: activated carbon

Earthy/musty:

  • Algae byproducts (geosmin, MIB)
  • Common in surface water sources

Fix: carbon block filter

Petroleum:

  • VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
  • Industrial contamination

Fix: lab testing + multi-stage filtration

Issue 4: Low water pressure (water-treatment-related)

Causes:

  1. Clogged sediment filter - replace
  2. Clogged carbon filter - replace
  3. Softener regeneration in progress - wait
  4. Bypass valve partially closed - open fully

If not water-treatment-related: plumbing issue.

Issue 5: Salt usage too high

Causes:

  1. Brine tank float stuck - replace float
  2. Regeneration setting too aggressive - reduce frequency
  3. Hardness setting wrong (set too high) - correct
  4. Customer didn't reduce usage during water-saving - normal

Issue 6: Salt usage too low

Causes:

  1. Bypass valve open (no water through softener) - close
  2. Float malfunction - replace
  3. Regeneration not occurring - check programming, motor

Issue 7: Customer reports "water tastes salty"

Causes:

  1. Regenerating happened recently - let it cycle, taste returns to normal
  2. Brine line leak into softener output - repair seal
  3. Bypass position causing salt water through home - correct position
  4. Customer is sodium-sensitive - recommend RO at drinking tap

Issue 8: Reduced production from RO

Causes:

  1. Tank pressure too low (most common)
  • Empty tank should have 7-10 PSI air
  • Customer empties tank, refills slowly
  1. Sediment filter clogged
  • Restricts flow to RO
  • Replace
  1. Membrane fouled
  • Years of use; reduced output
  • Test TDS; if reduction < 80%, replace
  1. Low water pressure
  • Below 40 PSI; RO needs minimum
  • Pressure boost pump

Issue 9: RO water tastes bad

Causes:

  1. Carbon post-filter exhausted
  • Replace
  • Removes membrane "taste"
  1. System unused for weeks
  • Drain tank + restart
  • Stagnant water tastes off
  1. Membrane is degrading
  • Test TDS reduction
  • Replace if < 80%

Issue 10: Water heater issues post-softener

Hard water before softener was installed:

  • Old scale + sediment in water heater
  • After softener: gradual cleanup
  • Some sludge moves; can clog fixtures
  • Solution: flush water heater after softener install

Issue 11: Customer says "softened water feels different"

Normal:

  • Slick feeling (no soap scum)
  • Some find this strange; not a problem

Concerns:

  • Sodium in water (low; about 5 mg/cup softened)
  • For sodium-sensitive: RO at drinking tap

Issue 12: Iron staining despite softener

Cause: Iron pre-filtration needed

  • Softener handles low iron OK
  • 1 ppm iron fouls resin

  • Iron filter required pre-softener

Fix: install iron filter; if resin damaged, replace.

Diagnostic equipment

  • Water hardness test (reagent or strips)
  • TDS meter (most useful tool)
  • pH meter
  • Iron test
  • Chlorine test
  • Bacteria test kit (presumptive)

When to refer to specialist

  • Bacterial contamination requiring shock chlorination + extensive flushing
  • Suspected chemical contamination (lab analysis required)
  • Specialty membranes / industrial-scale issues
  • Health-related water concerns

  • Recommended follow-up
  • Photos
  • Customer signoff

The most common customer complaint that isn't an issue: "WATER TASTES DIFFERENT AFTER SOFTENER INSTALL." This is normal - softened water has slightly more sodium + less hardness, both affecting taste. Educate at install: "Softened water tastes slightly different; if you'd like the same drinking water taste as before, install an RO at your kitchen tap." Pre-empt this complaint at the install + customer feels you're an expert.
