Point-of-Use vs. Point-of-Entry Water Treatment
Why this matters
Water treatment is sold in two architectural models: point-of-use (POU, treating water at a specific fixture) and point-of-entry (POE, treating all water entering the home). The customer's choice affects the cost, the maintenance, and which water-quality concerns are addressed. A water treatment company should be able to explain both clearly and recommend the right combination for the customer's specific concerns.
Point-of-use (POU)
What it is
Treatment installed at a specific fixture - typically the kitchen sink, sometimes the refrigerator water line, sometimes a single shower.

- Under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) for drinking water
- Faucet-mount carbon filter
- Refrigerator water filter
- Pitcher filter (Brita, ZeroWater)
- Shower-head filter
Pros
- Lower cost (smaller systems)
- Treats only what the customer drinks/uses for cooking
- Cartridges easier to replace
- More targeted (specific contaminants for specific applications)
- Quick install
Cons
- Only protects the treated fixture(s)
- Bath water, laundry water, dishwasher water all bypass POU
- Multiple fixtures need multiple systems
Point-of-entry (POE)
What it is
Treatment installed at the home's water entry point (typically near the meter or the pressure tank) - all water entering the home is treated.

- Water softener (POE)
- Whole-house sediment filter
- Whole-house carbon filter (taste/odor/chlorine)
- UV disinfection (POE)
- Iron / manganese treatment (POE)
Pros
- All water in the home is treated
- Single system to maintain (typically)
- Protects all fixtures, appliances, and plumbing
- Includes water for bathing and cooking
Cons
- Higher upfront cost
- Larger physical footprint
- Some treatments (RO) impractical at POE scale
- Maintenance more involved
- Some treatments waste water (RO produces brine; softener uses salt)

The service contract is often the long-term revenue stream; POE generates more service revenue per customer.
What POU can't do that POE can
POU treatment is at one fixture only:
- Bathing water is not improved
- Laundry water is not improved
- Dishwasher / dishwashing water is not improved
- Pets drink water from the main supply
- Plant watering uses untreated water
For some customers, the POU approach is sufficient. For others, POE is the right answer because they want treated water everywhere.
What POE can't do that POU can
POE has cost and practical limits:
- POE RO is impractical (would require massive system)
- POE distillation impractical
- Specific contaminant removal at very tight micron ratings impractical
- High-purity drinking water often requires POU even with POE in place
POU RO at the kitchen tap is the standard companion to POE treatment.
