Hardness Tests Soft But Spotting Continues Decision Tree

Why this matters

The softener is doing its job - you draw a sample, titrate it, and it reads zero or near-zero grains of hardness. Yet the customer still gets white spots on glasses, fixtures, and the car after a wash. Soft water that still spots is a real and frustrating call because the obvious culprit (calcium hardness) has been ruled out by your own test. Spots that survive softening come from dissolved solids that ion exchange does not remove: sodium from the softening reaction itself, silica, residual TDS, or simple evaporation of any mineral-bearing water on a surface. Chasing it by re-testing hardness over and over wastes the visit. This tree separates the non-hardness causes of spotting so you recommend the right fix (RO for drinking/spot-critical use, a spot-free rinse, or a TDS conversation) instead of re-plumbing a working softener.

Symptom presentation

  • Hardness titration on softened water reads 0-1 grain per gallon (gpg) - confirmed soft.
  • White, chalky, or filmy spots remain after air-drying on glass, chrome, stainless, or auto paint.
  • Often worst where water is allowed to evaporate in place (dishwasher final dry, car wash, shower glass).

Distinguish spotting (deposit left when water dries) from etching (permanent cloudiness in glass, usually from very soft + hot dishwasher water with low detergent), and from soap scum (sticky film, points to a different issue).

Quick checks

  • Re-confirm softened hardness with a fresh titration (0-1 gpg). Rule out a softener that is actually bleeding hardness.
  • Measure TDS on the softened water with a calibrated meter (ppm). Note the number.
  • Measure TDS on the raw/bypass water for comparison. Softening typically leaves TDS roughly unchanged (it swaps calcium/magnesium for sodium, not removing total solids).
  • Ask where the spots appear and whether the water is allowed to evaporate there.

  1. Is the softened water actually soft (0-1 gpg)?

    • No, it reads 3+ gpg: this is a softening fault, not a TDS issue - go work the "softener regenerates but water still hard" tree (resin, hardness setting, bypass, or hardness leakage). Stop here.
    • Yes, 0-1 gpg: continue.
  2. What is the softened-water TDS?

    • High TDS (several hundred ppm and up): the spots are dissolved solids other than hardness drying on the surface. Even perfectly soft water leaves a residue if TDS is high. RO is the correct answer for spot-critical and drinking use.
    • Low TDS but spots persist: continue to step 3 (silica or surface-specific causes).
  3. Is silica present in the raw water?

    • Silica is invisible to a hardness test and to most TDS meters' practical interpretation, and it leaves hard, glassy spots that resist wiping. If the well/source is known for silica or the spots are unusually hard to remove, suspect silica. Confirm with a silica test (ppm as SiO2). Standard softening and standard RO partially address it; high silica needs RO (well-maintained) and a spot-free rinse for cars/glass.
    • No silica indicated: continue to step 4.
  4. Where is the water evaporating?

    • Dishwasher: low detergent + very soft + hot water can etch glass (permanent) which looks like spotting but will not wipe off. Confirm by trying to polish one spot off - if it wipes, it is deposit; if not, it is etch. Etch fix is detergent/rinse-aid dosing and not over-softening for the dishwasher, not water treatment.
    • Car wash / outdoor: untreated water of any TDS spots on sun-heated paint. The fix is a spot-free (RO/DI) final rinse, not a change to the house softener.
    • Shower glass / fixtures: residual soap + TDS film; a squeegee plus the TDS/RO conversation applies.
  5. Is the softener adding noticeable sodium that contributes?

    • The softening reaction releases sodium proportional to the hardness removed. On very hard source water, softened TDS can read slightly higher and sodium spots more readily. This does not mean the softener is broken; it reinforces that RO is the spot-free and low-sodium answer for drinking and spot-critical fixtures.

Confirming the diagnosis

You have confirmed a TDS/non-hardness spotting case when:

  • Softened hardness is 0-1 gpg (titrated, not strip-guessed), and
  • Softened TDS is meaningfully elevated, or silica is confirmed present, and
  • The spots wipe off (deposit, not etch) and appear where water evaporates.

Demonstrate it for the customer: dry a drop of softened water on a clean black tile or mirror and let it evaporate. A visible ring proves dissolved solids remain after softening - the spot is TDS, not hardness, and a softener was never going to remove it.

Remediation

  • Install a point-of-use RO at the spot-critical fixture (kitchen, ice maker, coffee) for drinking and spot-free water; verify RO permeate TDS is a small fraction of feed.
  • Recommend a spot-free (RO or DI) final rinse for vehicle washing.
  • For dishwasher etch, adjust detergent/rinse-aid and confirm it is etch, not deposit; do not over-treat.
  • Leave the working softener alone - re-explain that ion exchange removes hardness, not total dissolved solids or silica.
