Water Shut-Off Valve Replacement Reference
Why this matters
A failing shut-off valve is the customer's "we can't turn the water off" emergency - and every plumber knows the dread of the main shutoff that won't fully close while you're trying to repair a leaking fixture. Replacement is one of the highest-leverage 30-minute services: a quality ball valve buys 30 years of reliable isolation, and a cheap gate valve buys 5 years of nothing-but-trouble. Knowing which valve goes where, and how to install it without melting the seat, is field-tech 101 done right.
Valve types - what to use where
Ball valve (modern standard):
- 90° handle, quarter-turn operation
- Full-port (preferred): internal bore matches the pipe ID; no flow restriction
- Standard port: smaller bore; restricts flow slightly
- Reliable: Teflon seats survive 25+ year service
- Visual confirmation of position (handle parallel = open, perpendicular = closed)
- Use for: main shutoffs, branch shutoffs, fixture shutoffs, anywhere isolation is needed
- Apollo 70-100 series is the residential ball-valve standard
Gate valve (legacy):
- Multi-turn (5-15 turns to operate)
- "Tongue" lifts to open / drops to close
- Failure mode: tongue corrodes off and stays stuck - valve "appears closed" but isn't fully sealing
- Replace any time you encounter one
- Acceptable in new install ONLY for: meter shutoffs (where the utility requires gate), some commercial applications
Globe valve:
- Multi-turn
- Always restricts flow even fully open (internal seat is in the flow path)
- Used where flow control is desired (rare residential)
- Avoid for simple isolation
Stop-and-waste valve:
- Ball or gate valve with a drain tap (small screw or hose-bib-style)
- Used for: outdoor line shutoffs (allows draining before freeze), pre-water-heater (allows tank drain)
- Modern: ball stop-and-waste valves combine quarter-turn with drain port
Angle stop / fixture shutoff:
- 1/4-turn or multi-turn
- Compression or sweat connection at supply, 3/8" or 1/2" compression at the fixture stub-out
- "Multi-turn" angle stops have a notorious failure rate; "quarter-turn" angle stops (also called ball-stop angle stops) are the modern standard
Sizing
- Main building shutoff - match the service line (typically 3/4" or 1" in residential)
- Branch shutoffs - match the branch line (1/2" or 3/4")
- Fixture shutoffs - typically 1/2" at the wall, 3/8" or 1/2" compression at the fixture
- Full-port required anywhere flow matters (main, branch trunks). Standard port acceptable on short fixture runs.

Procedure - main shutoff replacement (sweat, brass ball valve)
Time: 45-90 min depending on access.
Tools and materials:
- New full-port brass ball valve, correct size (typical 3/4" or 1")
- Two sweat couplings of matching size (in case you have to remove and re-extend pipe)
- Tubing cutter or hacksaw
- Pipe brush + emery cloth
- Lead-free solder (Oatey Safe-Flo, NSF 61)
- Water-soluble flux
- Propane or MAPP torch + heat shield / fire blanket
- Pipe wrench / channel locks
- Bucket and rags
- Wet rag for cooling
Steps:
- Shut off water upstream of the existing main shutoff (if possible - sometimes the utility shutoff at the street is the only option for a main valve replacement). Open lower-fixture taps to drain residual.
- Verify the line is depressurized by opening any nearby hose bib or fixture.
- Open the existing valve fully so the line drains as you cut.
- Mark cut points on the pipe, about 1.5-2" upstream and downstream of the existing valve (enough to fit a coupling and the new valve).
- Cut the pipe with a tubing cutter (better) or hacksaw. Have a bucket positioned - residual water will pour out.
- Clean pipe ends with emery cloth or fitting brush until bright copper. Same for the inside of any coupling.
- Dry-fit the new valve and coupling(s) to verify alignment.
- Open the new valve fully. This is the step techs forget that ruins the valve. The torch's heat will deform the seat if it's closed during soldering.
- Apply water-soluble flux to both pipe ends and the inside of the valve sockets and any coupling sockets.
- Heat the fitting (not the pipe). The fitting needs to reach solder-melt temp; the pipe gets there by conduction.
- Touch solder to the joint opposite the flame side. When it flows in by capillary action, you'll see a silvery bead form all around the joint. Move on quickly - don't keep heating after the joint takes solder.
- Wipe excess with a damp rag (let the joint cool for 10-15 seconds first, otherwise you'll splash hot solder).
- Let the joint cool naturally for 60+ seconds before pressure testing. Don't quench with water (thermal shock can crack solder joints in extreme cases).
- Close the valve, restore water upstream slowly. Listen for hiss. Check all joints visually.
- Open the valve, run water at a downstream fixture to confirm flow. Close the valve, verify shutoff (drip stops within 30 sec of closing).
When sweating isn't an option (push-fit or PEX)
- Push-fit: mark insertion depth on the pipe before pushing. Push firmly to the stop. Tug-test. Less skill required but the joint isn't visible later; for inside-wall connections, soldering is still preferred.
- PEX-A (cold expansion): PEX side gets expansion fitting; valve side typically threaded to a brass adapter. Verify the PEX-to-valve transition is well-supported (PEX can pull on a heavy brass valve).
