Water Pressure + Flow Rate Reference

Why this matters

Customer complaints "weak pressure" + "no hot water" + "won't drain" all trace back to pressure + flow basics. The plumber who knows GPM targets + pressure ranges + sizing rules diagnoses quickly + sells the right fix. This is the field card.

Pressure basics

1 PSI = 2.31 ft of head (vertical water column).

1 ft head = 0.434 PSI.

City water supply: 40 - 80 PSI typical at home. Above 80 PSI per IRC P2903.3 requires PRV (pressure-reducing valve).

Static pressure: pressure with no flow (faucets closed). Measured at outdoor hose bib.

Working pressure: pressure during flow; drops 5 - 15 PSI typical from static.

Acceptable residential: 45 - 75 PSI static.

Pressure problems

High pressure (> 80 PSI):

  • Causes leaks at appliances + valves
  • Premature fixture failure
  • Toilet ghost-flushing
  • Pipe banging
  • Install PRV at meter / entry

Low pressure (< 30 PSI):

  • Showers weak
  • Multiple fixtures can't run simultaneously
  • Causes: clogged pipes, undersized supply, water-utility issue, partially-closed shutoff
  • Booster pump may be needed

Pressure surges (water hammer): sudden valve closure (washing machine, ice maker, dishwasher). Install water hammer arrestor at appliance.

Fixture flow rates (1.0 - 2.5 GPM typical)

Federal max (EPAct 1992, updated 2011):

  • Showerhead: 2.5 GPM at 80 PSI (1.5 - 1.8 GPM low-flow)
  • Faucet bath: 2.2 GPM (1.5 GPM low-flow)
  • Faucet kitchen: 2.2 GPM (1.5 GPM low-flow)
  • Toilet flush: 1.6 gal/flush (1.28 GPF WaterSense low-flow)

Pre-1992 fixtures: 3 - 5 GPM showerheads + 3.5 - 7 GPF toilets. Common upgrade for water-bill reduction.

Fixture demand (sizing supply)

Fixture unit method (UPC):

  • Bathroom group (toilet, lav, tub): 6 WSFU
  • Kitchen sink: 1.5
  • Dishwasher: 1.4
  • Washing machine: 4
  • Hose bib: 2.5
  • Whole house typical: 12 - 20 WSFU

WSFU → GPM (converted via demand curve):

  • 10 WSFU ~ 8 GPM
  • 20 WSFU ~ 15 GPM
  • 50 WSFU ~ 30 GPM

Pipe sizing for supply

Copper Type L (typical residential):

  • 1/2": 4 - 5 GPM safe
  • 3/4": 10 - 12 GPM safe
  • 1": 18 - 20 GPM safe

PEX: similar capacity to copper one size up (smaller ID).

CPVC: similar capacity to copper one size up.

Galvanized: corrodes inside; flow drops over time.

Water heater sizing

Tank: 1.5 - 2 gallons per person for typical hot water demand.

  • 1-2 people: 30 - 40 gal
  • 3-4 people: 50 gal
  • 5+ people: 65 - 80 gal OR tankless

Tankless GPM rating: rated at temp rise (incoming → output). Example: 8 GPM at 50°F rise (40°F incoming → 90°F output).

Whole-house tankless (residential): 7 - 11 GPM typical. Two simultaneous showers + dishwasher = 5 - 7 GPM demand.

Drain sizing

DFU (drainage fixture units) + slope:

  • 1-1/4" drain: 1 DFU (small lav)
  • 1-1/2" drain: 1 - 3 DFU (lav, kitchen sink)
  • 2" drain: 6 - 8 DFU (shower, tub, washing machine)
  • 3" drain: 20 - 35 DFU (toilet branch, multiple fixtures)
  • 4" drain: 60 - 200+ DFU (building main)

Slope: 1/4" per ft for 2" + smaller; 1/8" per ft for 3" + larger (gravity drainage). Too steep = water leaves solids; too shallow = stagnant.

Vent sizing

1-1/2" vent: lav, small fixture.

2" vent: shower, tub, kitchen sink, washer.

3" vent: bathroom group, multiple fixtures.

Vent through roof unless AAV (air admittance valve) per code.

Water pressure regulator (PRV)

Required when incoming pressure > 80 PSI. Installed at entry; reduces to 45 - 60 PSI residential.

Common brands: Watts (LF25AUB), Wilkins (NR3XL), Apollo.

Sizing: 3/4" PRV for typical 3/4" service line; 1" for larger.

Expansion tank

Required when system is "closed" by PRV OR check valve (per UPC + most jurisdictions).

Sizing: water heater capacity:

  • 40-50 gal water heater: 2-gal expansion tank
  • 65-80 gal: 4-gal
  • 100+ gal: 6 - 8 gal

Pressurize to match supply pressure (50 PSI typical).

Common water-pressure mistakes

Skipping PRV on > 80 PSI supply (premature appliance failures + leaks). Skipping expansion tank in closed system (water heater T&P valve discharges OR ruptures). Undersized supply pipe (multiple fixtures starve). Galvanized pipe corrosion narrows ID (flow drops 50%+ over decades). Mineral buildup in faucet aerators (DIY remove + soak in vinegar). Closed angle valve at fixture (looks normal; just partially closed). Pinched flex line (kinked supply hose under sink).

Common flow problems

Aerator clogged: 30-second clean restores flow. Cartridge mineral buildup: replace cartridge OR descale. Crossover (hot + cold mixing in a single-handle valve): replace cartridge. Hot water sediment in tank: drain tank annually. Water softener bypassed OR clogged.

Test procedure

  1. Hose-bib gauge: read static pressure
  2. Open one fixture: read working pressure
  3. Open multiple fixtures: read pressure drop
  4. Inspect for galvanized + visible corrosion
  5. Test individual fixtures: aerator, cartridge, supply lines

The single most-useful pressure diagnosis habit is the OUTDOOR HOSE BIB CHECK FIRST. Customer says "low pressure". Before tearing apart bathrooms, hook a pressure gauge to outdoor hose bib + read static. If > 30 PSI = supply is fine; problem is downstream (aerator, cartridge, supply line). If < 30 PSI = entire system is underpressured; problem is upstream (PRV, supply line size, utility, OR galvanized pipe). One 60-second test eliminates 60% of "investigate everywhere" time + tells you where to actually look.
