Water Heater Anode Rod Service Reference

Why this matters

The anode rod is the sacrificial metal that protects the steel tank from galvanic corrosion. The rod corrodes preferentially - when it's gone, the tank starts corroding, and a corroded tank is a tank failure. An inexpensive rod inspected and replaced on schedule turns a 10-12 year tank into a 18-25 year tank. Most homeowners never know the rod exists; most plumbers never check it. This is the field card for the service that quietly doubles tank life.

How it works

Galvanic protection: when two dissimilar metals share an electrolyte (the water in the tank), the more electrochemically active metal corrodes first and protects the less active metal. Steel tank + magnesium rod + water = magnesium corrodes, steel survives. Same principle as zinc anodes on a boat hull.

When the rod is consumed past ~50% of original diameter, or has exposed >6" of bare steel core wire, it's no longer providing reliable protection. From that point forward, the tank wall is the next thing to be sacrificed.

Rod materials

Magnesium - most common factory rod. Most electrochemically active, best protection per inch, fastest consumption. In aggressive water (high TDS, hot well water, water softeners) magnesium can be consumed in 2-3 years. Default choice in normal municipal water.

Aluminum (or aluminum-zinc alloy) - slower consumption than magnesium, less electrochemical drive. Choice when:

  • Water has a strong sulfur ("rotten egg") smell - caused by anaerobic bacteria reducing sulfates in the water using hydrogen from magnesium corrosion. Switching to aluminum-zinc usually eliminates the smell within a week.
  • Magnesium is being consumed in <2 years (very aggressive water).

Powered (impressed-current) anode - a small electronic device that applies a continuous low voltage to a titanium rod. Never consumed. Brands: Corro-Protec, Hot Rod. Moderate one-time investment. Choice for installations where the rod is repeatedly consumed quickly, or where the tank is in a hard-to-service location. Requires 120V supply at the heater (sometimes a problem on gas-only setups).

When to inspect / replace

  • First inspection: at 3 years on municipal water, 1-2 years on well water or with a softener.
  • After that: annual inspection if the previous rod was significantly consumed; every 2-3 years if it was barely touched.
  • Replace if: more than 50% of the magnesium is gone, or more than 6" of the steel core wire is exposed, or the rod has deep pitting (cratered, not just thinned), or the rod is white-coated and the tank shows sulfur smell (swap material rather than just thickness).
  • Combo anode - some heaters have a rod built into the hot-water outlet nipple instead of (or in addition to) a hex-plug rod on top. If a tank has no visible hex plug for an anode, check the hot outlet. Combo rods are about half the surface area of a dedicated rod and consume faster.

Tools and parts

  • Replacement rod: 3/4" NPT × matching length to original (typical 42-44" for 40-50 gal, 54" for 75-80 gal). Confirm material (magnesium / aluminum-zinc / powered).
  • Flexible / segmented rod - for installs with <18" of overhead clearance above the heater. Three jointed sections instead of a rigid rod; bends through low ceilings.
  • Socket size: 1-1/16" most common (US heaters). Some Bradford White, AO Smith use 27mm. Older / commercial units may use 7/8" or 1-5/16". Buy the impact-rated version - anode hex nuts are often stuck.
  • Breaker bar (24-30") or 1/2" impact gun (300+ ft-lb capability). Factory rods are typically installed at 50-60 ft-lb but with 10+ years of corrosion and thread sealant, they can require 200+ ft-lb to break loose.
  • Garden hose for partial drain
  • PTFE tape (yellow gas-rated is fine on water; standard white works too)
  • Camera or inspection scope if rod hex is hidden under foam insulation top

Inspection / replacement procedure

  1. Cut power or gas. Electric: flip the breaker, lock out if commercial. Gas: turn the control to OFF and shut the gas cock.
  2. Close the cold-water inlet to the heater.
  3. Open a hot tap somewhere in the house to break vacuum and let the tank drain a few gallons easily.
  4. Drain 2-3 gallons from the heater drain valve. Enough to drop the water level below the anode hex (the anode threads in from the top, so the top few inches of tank need to be empty before you back the rod out - otherwise you get a fountain).
  5. Locate the anode hex on the top of the tank. Sometimes plainly visible. Sometimes hidden under:
  • A plastic round cap (pop off)
  • The factory foam insulation (cut a small disc out, foam is dense)
  • A bonded label (peel back) On some 75+ gal units, the anode port is on the side near the top, not the very top.
  1. Break it loose. This is the hard part. Set the impact in reverse, full power, short bursts. If hand-loosening: 30" breaker bar, brace the tank, lean into it. Tanks have walked across basements from a worker hanging on a stuck rod - get a helper to hold the tank or strap it.
  2. Back the rod out. It will come up in increments as the threads unwind; the rod itself may not lift if it's badly consumed and stuck on the tank lining - pull as you unscrew.
  3. Inspect. Lay the consumed rod alongside a new rod for comparison. Photograph. Decide replace vs reinstall.
  4. If replacing: apply 2-3 wraps of PTFE tape on the new rod's threads, hand-start (carefully - cross-threading the 3/4" NPT is easy, and the tapping is in soft tank-top steel that doesn't recover). Snug with the socket. Final torque ~50 ft-lb, not gorilla-tight - you'll be the one breaking it loose at the next service.
  5. Close drain. Open cold inlet. Open a hot tap to purge air. Once steady water flows from the hot tap, close it.
  6. Check the anode hex for leaks with the tank back to pressure. Tighten a bit more if it weeps.
  7. Restore power / gas. Verify operation.
