Why this matters

The path into a skilled trade isn't a single road. Apprenticeship (paid earn-while-you-learn), trade school (formal classroom training), and self-taught + on-the-job (DIY route) all produce working trade professionals - at different cost, speed, and credential outcomes. Each path has tradeoffs. Understanding them helps the entry-level person choose well, helps an employer build a hiring strategy, and helps an experienced tech mentor someone earlier in the journey.

The four main pathways

1. Union / formal apprenticeship

How it works:

  • Apply to a union's joint apprenticeship and training program (JATC)
  • Typically 4-5 year program combining work and classroom
  • Paid as you go (~50% of journeyman rate first year, increasing yearly)
  • 8,000-10,000 hours of on-the-job training + 600-1,000 hours classroom
  • Graduate as a journeyman

Pros:

  • Tuition-free or low-cost
  • Get paid from day one
  • Strong technical training, industry standards
  • Direct path to high-paying union employment
  • Pension and benefits typically included
  • Industry-recognized credential

Cons:

  • Limited slots; competitive application
  • Geographic limitations (union strong in some markets, weak in others)
  • Union dues and rules
  • Less flexibility in employer choice

Major unions:

  • United Association (UA): Plumbing, pipefitting, HVAC service
  • International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW): Electrical
  • Sheet Metal Workers International (SMART): Sheet metal, HVAC sheet metal
  • International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators (HFIAW): Insulation
  • Operating Engineers (IUOE): Stationary engineers (large boiler/chiller operations)
  • United Roofers and Waterproofers International: Roofing

2. Open-shop / non-union employer apprenticeship

How it works:

  • Apprentice with an employer (sometimes formal, sometimes informal)
  • Registered apprenticeship (Department of Labor's program) provides structure
  • Same hours requirement as union (3,000-10,000 OJT + 144-300 classroom)
  • Paid; rate varies by employer
  • Many graduate as journey-level

Pros:

  • Flexibility - work for any employer
  • Direct path with chosen employer
  • Sometimes faster (smaller program)
  • Skills + work history

Cons:

  • Variable quality of training (some great, some poor)
  • Less standardized than union
  • Wage scale varies widely
  • No guaranteed industry recognition (registered apprenticeship does help)

ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors): open-shop training programs, recognized in many regions.

Vocational / Technical schools with employer partnerships: offer structured open-shop apprenticeship.

3. Trade school / community college

How it works:

  • 1-2 year program at a vocational school or community college
  • Classroom + lab + sometimes paid externship
  • Tuition varies widely (depends on school, public vs private)
  • Graduate with certificate or AAS degree

Pros:

  • Fast path to entry-level credential
  • Structured curriculum
  • Some employer connections
  • Pell Grant / federal aid eligible for accredited programs

Cons:

  • Paying tuition rather than earning
  • Many programs have variable quality
  • Credential alone doesn't make you a journeyman - need on-the-job hours too
  • For-profit schools sometimes prey on students with poor outcomes

Best programs:

  • Community college trade programs (highest value-per-dollar)
  • Universal Technical Institute (HVAC, automotive)
  • Lincoln Tech
  • State-funded vocational schools
  • Local high school career tech programs

Worst programs:

  • Online-only "trade certifications" that don't translate to employer hiring
  • For-profit schools with poor placement rates
  • Programs without lab / hands-on time

4. Self-taught / on-the-job (no formal program)

How it works:

  • Get an entry-level helper position
  • Learn from senior techs informally
  • Sit for journeyman exam once enough hours and study complete (state requirement)

Pros:

  • No tuition cost
  • Working immediately
  • Flexibility

Cons:

  • Slow advancement
  • Often miss theoretical / code background
  • Failure rate on journeyman exam higher
  • Geographic constraints - many states require formal apprenticeship for journeyman license

This is the historic path; less common today as state licensing tightens.

What to look for in any program

  • Wage scale: what do apprentices earn at each level? Compare to local journeyman wages
  • Total cost: tuition + tools + living expenses minus earnings
  • Placement rate: % of graduates who get hired in the trade within 6 months
  • Industry recognition: is the credential accepted in your state?
  • Pass rate on licensing exams: if the program prepares you for the journeyman exam, what's the pass rate?
  • Class size and lab availability: are you actually getting hands-on time?
  • Graduate testimonials: what do recent grads say?

Hours requirements (typical)

For journeyman license (varies by state):

  • 8,000 hours work experience for electrical apprentices (~4 years full-time)
  • 6,000-10,000 hours for plumbing
  • 4,000-6,000 hours for HVAC
  • Plus 144-300 hours classroom
  • Plus state-required examination

For master license (varies by state):

  • Often 2,000-4,000 hours as a journeyman before eligibility
  • Plus additional classroom (sometimes)
  • Plus master exam (business + code + advanced trade)

What to do before committing to a path

  3. Verify state licensing requirements for your destination - sometimes a particular path is required
  4. Compare total ROI (program cost vs starting wage vs lifetime earnings) for each path
  5. Decide on a 5-year horizon - what's the realistic path to journeyman?

Re-pathing - career change into the trades

Adults re-entering or transitioning into trades from another career:

  • Veterans: GI Bill covers many trade programs; Helmets to Hardhats program connects vets to apprenticeships
  • Mid-career changers: Some employers prefer mid-career hires (life experience, customer skills); some apprenticeship programs accept older applicants
  • Community college trade certs are often the fastest re-path (1-2 years, then apprentice or direct hire)

Pathway 1: Union apprenticeship (electrical, IBEW typical)

  • 4-year position: strongly positive - you earned across all four years and graduated with no debt
