Sewer Ejector Pump Service Reference
Why this matters
A basement bathroom, basement laundry, or any fixture below the gravity sewer line needs an ejector pump to lift waste up to the building drain. When it fails, sewage backs up where you don't want it - and the customer learns about the pump's existence at the worst possible moment. The service is straightforward if you know the float types and discharge plumbing rules. Knowing when to clean vs replace vs upgrade is what makes the service call a quick win.
What an ejector pump does
Below-grade fixtures (basement toilet, basement shower, basement utility sink, washing machine in unfinished basement) drain by gravity into a sealed sump basin. The basin holds about 25-50 gallons. When level rises, a float switches on a submerged pump that lifts the sewage up through a discharge pipe into the building's gravity drain above.
Building drain has its own slope (1/4" per foot minimum) toward the city sewer or septic. The ejector pump just gets the basement-level fixtures up to that gravity-drain elevation.
Ejector vs grinder - when to use which
Ejector pump (effluent-style ejector):
- Discharges through 2" PVC line
- Handles solids up to 2" diameter (manufacturer-specified)
- Pumps the sewage as-is, doesn't break it up
- Lower power: 4/10 to 1/2 HP typical residential
- Quieter
- Cheaper (moderate residential cost)
- Most basement bathroom installs
Grinder pump:
- Discharges through 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" PVC
- Grinds solids before pumping
- Higher head pressure capability - useful for long runs or high lift (basement to second-floor sewer)
- 3/4 to 1+ HP typical residential
- Louder
- More expensive (premium residential cost)
- Used for: low-pressure sewer system connection, very long horizontal runs, very high lift
For a standard basement bathroom 8-12 ft below the main sewer, ejector is almost always the right choice. Grinder is for unusual geometry or for pressure-sewer systems (rural / low-density development).
Basin and venting
Sealed basin - 18" × 30" or 24" × 30" typical residential. Fiberglass or polyethylene. Sits in a hole in the basement floor with a tight-sealing lid (gaskets prevent sewer gas in the basement).
Inlet - 4" PVC for the gravity-drain side from the fixtures. Typically with a Fernco / no-hub coupling so the basin doesn't have to be precisely placed.
Vent - 2" PVC vent from the basin to the building DWV vent stack (IPC 916). Without a vent the basin can develop negative pressure that slows filling, pulls trap seals dry, or creates the sucking-from-fixture-trap noise customers hate. Tied into the vent stack ABOVE the highest fixture vent connection (or run independently to the roof).
Discharge - 2" PVC (for ejector) or 1-1/4" / 1-1/2" (for grinder), from pump outlet, vertical up, through a check valve, and across to the building gravity drain. The check valve is critical - without it, every time the pump stops, water in the vertical run falls back into the basin and the pump cycles again immediately.
Float types
Tethered float (mechanical) - the classic. Float ball or wedge dangling on a cord. Pump runs when float floats high; stops when float drops. Two floats (low-water shutoff + high-water start) for some setups; one float for simpler setups. Can tangle on the basin wall or on the pump itself.
Vertical float (rod-actuated) - a guide rod with a sliding float disc. More compact, less tangle-prone. Common on modern residential pumps.
Pressure switch / diaphragm - senses pressure at the basin bottom; converts to a pump-on signal. Most reliable but more expensive. Industrial / commercial typical.
Electronic / capacitive - modern; sensor-based with no moving parts. Premium pumps.
Common service calls and diagnoses
Pump runs but doesn't pump (humming, water level not dropping):
- Check valve stuck closed (no flow into discharge)
- Impeller jammed (cleared by manual rotation - many pumps have an external shaft access port)
- Pump seal failure (motor still energized but rotor/impeller spinning in water without lift)
Pump never runs (basin filling, no sound from pump):
- Float failed (mechanical) - stuck in low position or tangled
- Float switch failed (no signal even with float high)
- Breaker tripped (check panel first)
- Power lead disconnected at junction box
- Motor failed (high amperage on attempt to start, then trips overload)
Pump runs constantly:
- Float stuck high
- Check valve stuck open (water siphons back, basin refills, pump runs again)
- Inlet from drain leaking back somewhere
- Discharge line has reverse flow
Sewer smell in basement:
- Basin lid seal failed (foam gasket compressed, replace gasket)
- Vent not properly routed to outdoor termination
- Trap on the inlet fixtures dry (run water in all basement drains)
Sewage in basement (backup):
- Pump failed and basin overflowed
- Discharge clogged or frozen (if outdoor portion exposed)
- Power off to pump (look for tripped breaker as first move)
Service procedure
Tools: Multimeter, plug-in cord tester, pipe wrench (for unions), Phillips and flat screwdrivers, channel-lock pliers, rags, sewage gloves (heavy duty), bucket, scrub brush, replacement floats if known issue.
- Confirm power and turn off at breaker. Verify dead at the pump junction box.
- Listen at the basin lid. Standing water level (gurgling)? Or empty?
- Open the basin lid carefully. Sewer gas - work with the lid open only as long as needed; have a fan moving air toward an exterior door.
- Inspect the float visually. Tangled? Stuck? Worn cord?
- Test the pump manually - most pumps with a piggyback plug can be tested by plugging the pump directly into the wall (bypassing the float), with the basin holding water. Pump should energize, suck water down, push it up the discharge line. If the pump runs but doesn't move water, the impeller is jammed or the check valve is stuck.
- Pull and inspect the pump if needed - disconnect at the union just above the basin, lift out. Check impeller for jam (rag, plastic bag, hair clog).
- Check valve test - disconnect just above the check valve, lift, hold under water in a bucket. Should hold water from flowing backward through the valve.
- Reinstall, test full cycle - fill the basin (run water at a basement fixture), let it cycle on at the upper float, run until it shuts off at the lower float. Confirm normal operation.
