Septic system overview

Septic tank: receives household waste; settles solids + breaks down via anaerobic digestion.

Drain field (leach field): distributes liquid effluent through soil.

Soil treatment: bacteria + filtration; natural cleaning.

No connection to municipal sewer: on-site treatment.

Typical size: 1,000 - 1,500 gallon tank for 3-bedroom home.

Septic tank components

Inlet baffle: directs incoming waste downward.

Outlet baffle / tee: prevents solids from leaving with effluent.

Effluent filter (modern): traps fine solids; user-removable for cleaning.

Risers + lids: access to tank for pumping.

Manhole / access cover: secured; locked to prevent child access.

Distribution box (D-box): distributes effluent equally to drain field laterals.

Drain field laterals: perforated pipe in gravel; spreads effluent into soil.

Septic tank operation

Three layers form in tank:

  • Scum (top): grease + oils + light solids floating
  • Effluent (middle): clear liquid
  • Sludge (bottom): heavy solids settling

Inlet adds waste at top of effluent layer.

Outlet pulls effluent from middle.

Anaerobic bacteria break down solids over time; reduces volume by 50%.

Capacity ratio: 100% inlet flow + < 50% reduced solid waste; eventually fills.

Pump-out schedule: every 3 - 5 years typical residential.

Pump-out service

Frequency: 3 - 5 years OR when sludge + scum exceed 30% of liquid depth.

Inspection at pump-out: tank integrity, baffles, effluent filter, level.

Septic pumping: licensed service required; specific tanker truck.

Disposal: at licensed treatment facility.

Drain field

Perforated pipe in gravel trench: distributes effluent.

Soil percolation: bacteria treat effluent as it filters through.

Aerobic treatment in upper soil: faster decomposition.

Anaerobic in deeper soil: slower; natural process.

Common types:

  • Conventional gravity-fed: standard
  • Mound system: above-grade; high water table OR shallow bedrock
  • Pressure dose system: pump distributes; better for high-volume
  • Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU): with mechanical aeration; specialty

Drain field protection

Don't drive over: vehicles compact soil + crush pipes.

Don't plant trees / shrubs nearby: roots clog drain field.

Don't pave over: prevents oxygen + evaporation.

Don't disturb surface: drainage paths matter.

Don't extend driveway over: same as paving.

Septic-friendly practices (customer education)

Don't flush:

  • Wipes (even "flushable" wipes - they don't break down)
  • Sanitary products
  • Cat litter
  • Grease / oil
  • Chemicals (paint, solvents)
  • Diapers
  • Anti-bacterial products in excess (kills helpful bacteria)

Reduce water usage:

  • Low-flow fixtures
  • Fix leaks promptly
  • Don't run washer + dishwasher simultaneously
  • Stagger water-intensive activities

Don't disturb tank:

  • No additives (bacteria treatments rarely needed if maintained)
  • No biocides

Common septic problems

Slow drains in home: tank full; need pump-out.

Toilet backs up: tank full OR clog between home + tank OR drain field saturated.

Drain field surfaces wet: drain field failing; effluent rising; serious issue.

Sewage smell outside: drain field issue OR tank vent.

Sewage in basement: backup; immediate emergency.

Tank lid cracks: replace OR concrete repair.

Drainfield failure: groundwater issue, age, neglect, root intrusion, vehicle compaction.

Tank inspection

Locate tank: as-built drawings OR locate-by-probe.

Riser to grade: dig if needed.

Open lid: chemical respirator + ventilation (hydrogen sulfide gas).

Inspect baffles + filter: in place + clean.

Measure layers: sludge layer thickness; total liquid depth.

Pump-out if needed: per measurements.

Drain field service

Routine maintenance: monitor for surfacing effluent, slow drains, odor.

Septic shock OR overload: caused by sudden high water use OR chemical entry.

Recovery period: weeks; allow soil + bacteria recovery.
