Refrigerant Types + EPA 608 Reference
Why this matters
Refrigerant rules + types changed dramatically in the last 5 years. R-22 is gone; R-410A phasing out; R-32 + R-454B coming in for 2025+. Field techs must know which refrigerant is in each system + the rules around handling. Wrong refrigerant mix = compressor damage; improper recovery = EPA fine. This is the field card.
Common refrigerants today
R-410A (Puron, AZ-20)
Status: phasing OUT 2025; production banned 2024 (AIM Act). Existing systems serviced; no new equipment.
Type: HFC blend (R-32 + R-125 50/50)
GWP (Global Warming Potential): 2,088
ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential): 0
Pressure: high - 350 PSI saturation at 100°F
Refrigerant oil: POE (polyolester)
Most residential AC + heat pumps installed 2010 - 2024.
R-32 (next-gen single-component)
Status: replacing R-410A for new equipment (2025+).
Type: HFC single component (difluoromethane).
GWP: 675 (~ 1/3 of R-410A)
ODP: 0
Mildly flammable (A2L safety class) - special handling
Pressure: similar to R-410A.
Refrigerant oil: POE.
Adoption: Daikin, LG, Mitsubishi started; expanding.
R-454B (Opteon XL41, Solstice 454B)
Status: alternative to R-32 for U.S. market 2025+.
Type: HFC blend (R-32 / R-1234yf 68.9 / 31.1).
GWP: 466 (~ 1/4 of R-410A).
ODP: 0.
Mildly flammable (A2L).
Pressure: similar to R-410A.
Brands: Trane, Carrier, Lennox using it 2025.
R-22 (Freon, old residential)
Status: BANNED for new equipment 2010; production banned 2020.
Type: HCFC (single component).
GWP: 1,810.
ODP: 0.055 (ozone-depleting).
Pressure: lower - 196 PSI saturation at 100°F.
Service-only: existing systems can be serviced with reclaimed R-22.
Customer guidance: R-22 systems > 15 years old typically not worth servicing.
R-454C, R-455A, R-466A
Emerging: alternative for commercial refrigeration + specific applications. Not yet mainstream residential.
Other (less common in residential service)
- R-134a: automotive AC + chiller; residential refrigerators
- R-407C: blend; some replacement scenarios for R-22
- R-404A: commercial refrigeration; phasing out
- R-744 (CO2): supermarket refrigeration; high-pressure
- R-290 (propane): mini split heat pumps; flammable
Safety classifications (ASHRAE 34)
A1: non-toxic, non-flammable. R-22, R-410A, R-134a.
A2L: low toxicity, mildly flammable. R-32, R-454B, R-1234yf. Modern HVAC refrigerants are mostly A2L.
A3: non-toxic, highly flammable. R-290 (propane), R-600a (isobutane). Mini splits + appliances.
B1, B2, B3: toxic; specialty industrial.
EPA 608 certification (required for refrigerant handling)
Universal: full certification covers all systems. Pass written test.
Type I: small appliances (refrigerator, freezer).
Type II: high-pressure systems (AC, heat pump).
Type III: low-pressure systems (chillers).
Required: anyone purchasing OR handling regulated refrigerant.
Recordkeeping: certified techs log all refrigerant transactions; sales restricted to certified.
Pressure-temperature (P/T) charts
P/T chart relates saturation pressure to temperature. Used for charging + diagnosis.
R-410A condenser at 95°F outdoor: saturation ~ 277 PSI, target high side ~ 380 PSI.
R-410A evaporator at 40°F coil: saturation ~ 118 PSI, target low side ~ 130 PSI.
R-32 + R-454B: similar pressures to R-410A but slightly different. Carry P/T chart card.
Charging methods
Superheat charging: fixed-orifice systems. Target superheat from manufacturer chart based on indoor wet-bulb + outdoor temp.
Subcooling charging: TXV systems (most modern). Target subcooling per manufacturer (typically 8 - 14°F).
Weighed-in (factory charge): most reliable. Per nameplate weight.
P/T method: less accurate; verify with superheat / subcool.
Recovery (mandatory before service)
EPA regulation: recover refrigerant from system before any opening (compressor change, leak repair, equipment removal).
Recovery rate (per EPA standard):
- Small appliance: 80% recovery OR 4" HG vacuum
- Large appliance: 80% recovery OR 0" HG vacuum
- Industrial: 90% recovery
Recovery into DOT-rated tank: tank labeled + tracked.
Reclaim vs reuse
Reclaim (return to OEM purity): only certified reclaim facility may resell. Required for any refrigerant returned to circulation.
Reuse on same system: allowed within same job IF refrigerant unaltered + clean.
Tools required for refrigerant work
- Manifold gauge set + hoses
- Refrigerant scale (digital, 0.05 oz resolution)
- Vacuum pump (deep vacuum capable)
- Vacuum gauge (micron gauge)
- Recovery machine + tanks
- Leak detector (electronic + soap solution + UV dye)
- Schrader removal tool + cores
- Tubing cutter + flaring tool
Common refrigerant mistakes
Mixing refrigerants (illegal; permanent compressor damage). Skipping recovery before opening system (EPA violation; fine $35,000+ per violation). Adding R-22 to R-410A system OR vice versa. Overcharge (high head pressure; compressor strain). Undercharge (low pressure; coil freeze). Skipping vacuum pull (moisture in system; acid formation; failed compressor). Wrong oil (mineral oil in HFC system damages compressor). Skipping leak repair (charged system loses refrigerant; service call returns).
Refrigerant pricing (2025)
Relative per-pound cost, most to least expensive:
- R-22: highest by far - recycled-only supply, no new production
- R-410A: elevated and rising as supply tightens
- R-134a: moderate
- R-454B: lower - new mainstream refrigerant
- R-32: lowest - new mainstream refrigerant
Customer impact: 5-lb leak repair on R-22 system can run into a substantial four-figure sum for refrigerant alone + diagnostic + repair labor. Often more than equipment replacement.
Documentation requirements
- Refrigerant purchase log (EPA Form)
- Tech certification
- Service records: refrigerant added/removed weight + reason
- Equipment leak rate (commercial > 50 lb charge)
Transitioning a customer
R-22 system replacement decision:
- System > 12 years old: replace
- Equipment failure (compressor, coil): replace with R-410A / R-32 system
R-410A system:
- Still serviceable
- Refrigerant available but expensive
- New equipment 2025+ likely R-32 / R-454B
Safety + A2L refrigerants
R-32 + R-454B + R-1234yf are mildly flammable. Specific rules:
No open flames during charging.
No-smoke / no-ignition source nearby.
Charge in well-ventilated area.
Equipment designed for A2L: A2L-rated compressors + service valves + recovery machines.
Service training: many manufacturers require A2L-specific certification.
