Refrigerant Tank Handling Reference

Why this matters

HVAC techs work with pressurized refrigerant tanks daily - charging, recovery, transportation, storage. Tanks are hazardous when mishandled. The tech who handles tanks correctly stays safe + maintains EPA compliance. This is the field card.

Tank types

Recovery tanks:

  • For removing refrigerant from system
  • DOT-rated
  • Color-coded by refrigerant type
  • Single-use OR refillable

Charging tanks:

  • Refrigerant cylinder for adding to system
  • Manufacturer-filled
  • Color-coded
  • Various sizes

Disposable cylinders:

  • Single-use
  • Empty + dispose properly
  • Common for service refills

Color coding

Per AHRI standard:

  • R-22: light green
  • R-410A: rose / pink
  • R-32: light blue / white (some)
  • R-454B: light green / similar
  • R-404A: orange
  • R-407C: chocolate brown
  • R-134a: light blue / sky blue
  • Recovered / mixed: yellow with gray (sometimes black + white)

Don't trust color alone:

  • Always verify with label
  • Especially older / refurbished

Tank ratings

DOT certification (US):

  • Pressure rating
  • Manufacturer + date
  • Test interval (5 years)
  • Tare weight + capacity

Tank specs stamped on tank:

  • Service pressure (typically 200-500+ PSI)
  • Test pressure (higher)
  • Tare weight
  • Maximum capacity

Tank inspection

Before each use:

  • Visual inspection (damage, rust)
  • Valve condition
  • Pressure gauge if integrated
  • Date check (within 5-year requalification)

Reject:

  • Damaged
  • Excessive rust
  • Bent
  • Past requalification date

Safe handling

Position:

  • Upright (typically)
  • Some tanks specified inverted
  • Secured (don't fall over)

Transportation:

  • Secured in vehicle (chains, straps)
  • Upright in vehicle
  • Don't transport hot OR cold extreme

Storage:

  • Cool, dry location
  • Not in direct sun
  • Not in occupied space (some)
  • Locked when not in use

Pressure considerations

Refrigerant tanks contain gas + liquid:

  • Pressure varies with temperature
  • Hot tank = higher pressure
  • Cold tank = lower pressure

Heating tank intentionally (sometimes):

  • Faster liquid flow
  • Special heating blanket
  • Don't exceed max pressure

Cooling tank intentionally (sometimes):

  • Slower pressure for transfer
  • Ice bucket
  • Manage carefully

Don't exceed temperature

Tank temperature limits:

  • Per manufacturer
  • Typically 125°F max
  • Above = pressure exceeding safety

Don't:

  • Leave in hot vehicle
  • Direct sunlight extended
  • Near heat source
  • In garage extreme heat

Filling recovery tank

Critical:

  • 80% maximum fill (by weight)
  • Tank's tare weight + 80% capacity = max gross
  • Stamped on tank
  • Use scale during filling

Overfilling:

  • Liquid expansion = pressure buildup
  • Tank can rupture
  • DOT violation
  • Significant safety risk

Recovery procedure (basic)

Tank-specific steps:

  • Connect to recovery machine outlet
  • Open tank valve
  • Monitor weight during recovery
  • Stop at 80% fill
  • Close valve when complete

Charging from tank

Vapor OR liquid:

  • Vapor (gas state): for some systems
  • Liquid: for blends + when manufacturer specifies
  • Don't change refrigerant composition (some blends)

Position:

  • Vapor: tank upright
  • Liquid: tank inverted (with proper safety)

Manufacturer specs for each refrigerant.

Tank requalification

DOT requirement:

  • 5-year intervals
  • Hydrostatic testing
  • Certified facility

Customer's tanks:

  • Customer service business responsibility
  • Track requalification dates
  • Don't use past-due tanks

Color = refrigerant type rule

Critical:

  • Never mix refrigerants
  • Even small amount contaminates
  • Always verify correct refrigerant
  • Color helps but verify label

Damaged tank protocol

If tank damaged:

  • Don't use
  • Vent in controlled manner (NOT to atmosphere; recover OR return)
  • Return to supplier OR proper disposal
  • Document

Empty tank handling

"Empty" tank still has residual:

  • Don't crush
  • Don't dispose in regular trash
  • Return to supplier OR refill
  • Specific rules per type

Cylinder valves

Common valve types:

  • Brass valves (durable)
  • Different fittings for different refrigerants

Don't force:

  • If valve stuck: don't force open
  • Damage possible
  • Sometimes specialty wrench needed

Pressure relief valve

Built into tanks:

  • Releases excess pressure
  • Don't tamper
  • Replace if damaged

If PRV releasing:

  • Tank too hot OR overfilled
  • Move to cool location
  • Verify fill level
  • Address cause

Safety PPE

For refrigerant work:

  • Safety glasses (essential)
  • Gloves (frostbite protection)
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Long sleeves

For tank transport / handling:

  • Same plus securing equipment

Refrigerant exposure response

Skin contact:

  • Frostbite risk (liquid)
  • Rinse with cool water
  • Don't rub
  • Medical if severe

Eye contact:

  • Frostbite + irritation
  • Flush eye
  • Medical attention

Inhalation:

  • Limited toxicity for most refrigerants
  • Some asphyxiation risk
  • Fresh air
  • Medical if symptoms

Major leak in enclosed space:

  • Evacuate
  • Ventilate
  • Medical attention

EPA compliance

Refrigerant tank related:

  • Section 608 certification required
  • Proper handling
  • No venting
  • Documented work

Violations:

  • Significant fines
  • Loss of certification
  • Criminal in some cases

Transportation

In service vehicle:

  • Secured upright
  • Ventilation
  • Not near heat
  • Quick access

Long-distance:

  • DOT shipping regulations
  • Hazmat classification
  • Proper documentation

Storage at facility

Best practice:

  • Cool, dry
  • Locked
  • Inventory tracked
  • Separated by type
  • Ventilated

Don't:

  • Random pile
  • Outside extreme weather
  • Unsecured

Common tank handling mistakes

  • Overfilling (most dangerous)
  • Wrong color cylinder for refrigerant
  • Past-requalification tanks
  • Direct sun storage
  • Unsecured transport
  • Tampered valves
  • Mixed refrigerants in single tank

Disposable cylinder protocol

One-time use cylinders:

  • Empty fully (recover any residual)
  • Mark "empty"
  • Return per supplier program
  • Don't refill (not DOT-approved for refill typically)

Refillable cylinder protocol

Reusable tanks:

  • Refill at certified facility
  • Requalified per schedule
  • Tracked

Cross-contamination concerns

Different refrigerants in same tank:

  • Composition changed
  • No longer pure
  • Disposal as "mixed"
  • Reduced value (sometimes zero)

Prevention:

  • Color-coded discipline
  • Verify before connecting
  • Separate hoses sometimes
  • Don't share tanks across refrigerants

Recovery tank labeling

Required:

  • Refrigerant type
  • Date recovered
  • From whom OR equipment
  • Your name / company

For traceability + compliance.

When tank "feels empty"

Verify:

  • Weigh tank
  • Compare to tare weight
  • Sometimes pressure low but liquid remains
  • Don't assume empty
