Refrigerant Charging Procedures Reference

Why this matters

Adding refrigerant correctly is the difference between a system that operates at nameplate capacity for 15+ years and one that limps along at 75% capacity until the compressor fails. The two main methods - weight charging (factory-spec amount) and superheat/subcooling charging (operational verification) - each have their place. Mixing them up, or using one without verifying with the other, produces over-charged or under-charged systems. This is the field card.

Two charging methods

Weight charging (also called "exact charge"):

  • Add exactly the manufacturer-specified weight of refrigerant
  • Used for: new installs, leak-repaired systems, complete charge after recovery
  • Method: digital scale in line with refrigerant cylinder; weight removed = weight added
  • Accurate if line-set length matches factory assumption

Superheat/subcooling charging:

  • Measure operational parameters; adjust charge until SH (for piston systems) or SC (for TXV systems) is in spec
  • Used for: verification after weight charging, top-off charging, diagnostic
  • Method: clamp-on temperature probes + manifold pressure gauges
  • Reflects actual operational state

The two methods complement each other: weight charge gets you close, SH/SC verifies you're at the right operational point.

Weight charging procedure

Pre-work:

  1. Confirm system was properly evacuated (see Vacuum and Evacuation Procedures Reference)
  2. Verify factory-spec charge from rating plate: typically 4-12 lbs for residential AC, 8-20 lbs for residential heat pump
  3. Confirm refrigerant type (R-410A, R-32, R-454B, R-134a) and obtain proper refrigerant
  4. Verify EPA 608 certification

Line-set adjustments: Manufacturer charge specification assumes a standard line-set length (usually 15 ft or 25 ft). For longer line sets:

  • Add factory-specified ounces per foot beyond standard length (typically 0.5-0.6 oz/ft for residential)
  • Example: 50 ft line set with 25 ft standard = 25 extra feet × 0.6 oz/ft = 15 oz additional

Charging: 5. Connect refrigerant cylinder to manifold (vapor or liquid port depending on system requirement) 6. Place cylinder on digital scale; tare the scale 7. Note starting weight 8. Open valve to system; refrigerant flows from cylinder to system 9. Charge into the LIQUID side (high side) is faster; vapor side is also acceptable 10. Charge slowly to avoid liquid hammering or oil migration 11. Continue until target weight is reached 12. Close manifold valves; close cylinder 13. Allow system to stabilize 15-20 minutes 14. Verify with SH/SC measurement

Superheat/subcooling charging procedure

System type determines method:

  • TXV / EEV (most modern systems): use SUBCOOLING (SC)
  • Fixed orifice / piston (older or budget systems): use SUPERHEAT (SH)

For TXV system using SC:

  1. Connect manifold to service ports
  2. Attach insulated temperature probes on suction line (near suction service valve) and liquid line (near liquid service valve)
  3. Run system in cooling mode, stabilize 15-20 minutes
  4. Read suction pressure, suction temperature; calculate SH (verify metering device is working)
  5. Read liquid pressure, liquid temperature; calculate SC
  6. Compare SC to manufacturer target (typically 8-12 °F)
  7. SC too high (overcharge): recover small amount, retest
  8. SC too low (undercharge): add small amount, retest
  9. Add or remove in small increments (a few ounces at a time); restabilize 5-10 minutes between adjustments

For piston system using SH: 1-3. Same connection and stabilization 4. Read suction pressure, suction temperature; calculate SH 5. Read indoor return-air WB and outdoor DB 6. Reference manufacturer's superheat charging chart for the matching outdoor/indoor conditions 7. Compare measured SH to chart target 8. SH too low (overcharge): recover small amount 9. SH too high (undercharge): add small amount

Stabilization conditions

For SH/SC to be valid:

  • Outdoor temperature ≥65 °F (some manufacturers ≥55 °F)
  • Indoor temperature steady; thermostat calling
  • System running 15-20 minutes minimum after start (longer in mild weather)
  • Indoor airflow at design CFM (clean filter, clean coil)
  • Indoor wet-bulb steady

In cool weather (below 65 °F outdoor), SH/SC measurement is unreliable. Use weight charging from a known-good baseline OR wait for warmer weather to verify.

Refrigerant cylinder handling

Liquid vs vapor cylinders:

  • Vapor (top draw) connection: refrigerant comes out as gas; slower charging
  • Liquid (dip tube) connection: refrigerant comes out as liquid; faster but care needed
  • R-410A and similar high-pressure refrigerants: generally charged as liquid for accuracy

Cylinder positioning:

  • Vapor charge: cylinder upright
  • Liquid charge: cylinder inverted (or with dip tube engaged)
  • Refrigerant flow direction depends on positioning

Safety:

  • Refrigerant liquid + skin = frostbite. Wear gloves.
  • Refrigerant in enclosed space → asphyxiation risk. Ventilate.
  • Refrigerant cylinders must be DOT-rated; replace older cylinders periodically
  • Color codes vary; cylinder labels show refrigerant type and safety classification

Recovery (when removing refrigerant)

If you must remove refrigerant from a system:

  • EPA Section 608 requires recovery, NOT venting
  • Use a recovery machine (Bacharach, Yellow Jacket, JB Industries)
  • Recover into a DOT-rated recovery cylinder
  • Pull system to required vacuum per EPA (varies by appliance type)
  • Disconnect; weigh recovered amount for documentation

Venting refrigerant is illegal (fine $25,000+ per incident under EPA enforcement) AND environmentally damaging.

Topping off vs recovering and starting fresh

Topping off a low system:

  • Acceptable if leak is small and was repaired
  • Add refrigerant until SH/SC is in spec
  • Document the amount added
  • Without leak repair, refrigerant will be low again - leak must be addressed

Starting fresh (recovery + recharge):

  • Required after a major leak, compressor change, or contamination
  • Recover all refrigerant
  • Replace filter-dryer
  • Evacuate to spec
  • Weight charge per nameplate (with line-set adjustment)
  • Verify with SH/SC
